A Samsung fingerprint sensor may fail because something is interfering with the reader, the finger or sensor area is dirty, the finger is unusually wet or dry, or a setting is blocking biometric unlock. On phones with an in-display reader, a screen protector is another common check. Start with the reversible steps below, keep your PIN, password, or pattern available, and move to diagnostics or service only if the problem continues. Exact settings and features vary by Galaxy model and software version.
First, make sure you can unlock the phone another way
Use your PIN, password, or pattern if fingerprint recognition is unavailable. Samsung recommends keeping an alternative screen-lock method in place. Biometrics can also be unavailable because they were disabled in settings, the phone entered Lockdown mode, or a company-managed device restricts biometric unlock. Samsung explains biometric unlock and related settings.
Check the sensor, finger, and phone conditions
Try the simple physical checks before changing settings or deleting saved fingerprints. Samsung notes that these factors can affect recognition; whether a protector matters depends on whether your model uses an in-display reader. - Inspect the screen protector if the reader is under the display. Dirt, scratches, thickness, texture, material, or a poor fit over the sensor can reduce accuracy. Samsung recommends genuine protective films and says it does not guarantee compatibility with third-party protectors. If you recently changed the protector, try again after checking that it is clean and properly fitted. Choose any replacement for your exact Galaxy model and sensor type; a protector that works with one model is not necessarily suitable for another.
- Remove anything that may obstruct the reader. Temporarily take off a case if it touches or blocks the sensor. Clean the sensor area and your finger, then try again with a finger that is neither very wet nor very dry.
- Pause wireless charging and retry. Samsung lists wireless charging as a possible factor to check.
- Consider temperature. Very hot or cold conditions can affect fingerprint recognition; retry when the phone is at a more moderate temperature.
Delete and register the fingerprint again
If the basic checks do not help—or recognition became unreliable after replacing a protector—re-register the fingerprint. Settings labels and paths vary by model and software, so use the phone’s Settings search for “Fingerprints” if the menu is not where expected.

- Open the phone’s fingerprint settings and remove the affected saved fingerprint.
- Choose the option to add a fingerprint and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Hold the phone as you normally do. Cover the sensor and shift the finger slightly between scans so the phone captures different parts of the print.
Samsung also describes an “Improve accuracy” option for devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher: select the registered print and scan the same finger 10 times. This feature is not established as available on older software or every Galaxy model. Samsung’s registration guidance covers the enrollment process and newer accuracy option.
Run Samsung Members diagnostics
If re-registration and the physical checks do not resolve the issue, open Samsung Members and look in Phone diagnostics for the “Fingerprint recognition” test, where supported. The diagnostic can help check recognition, but it does not by itself identify every possible cause or establish the cost of a repair.

When to contact Samsung service
Seek Samsung or authorized service if the screen or sensor area is physically damaged, the fingerprint check is unavailable or fails, or recognition remains unreliable after the steps above. A factory reset is not a good early troubleshooting step: Samsung cautions that a reset may not be a lasting fix when an app issue later returns after an update. Since the cause of an individual fault cannot be determined from the symptom alone, service is the appropriate next step for unresolved or damaged hardware.
