A running heater only adds heat; it cannot stop drafts, cold walls and windows, poor air circulation, or an uneven heating system from making your seating area uncomfortable. Find the exact source of the chill first, then fix the building or distribution problem before buying a larger heater.

Why a heated room can still feel cold

Thermal comfort depends on more than the temperature shown by a thermostat. Your body exchanges heat with moving air and with nearby surfaces. A room may therefore feel chilly while the heater is operating normally if heat escapes faster than it reaches you, if you are next to a cold window, or if warm air collects at the ceiling instead of where you sit.

Air leaks continuously replace warm indoor air

Gaps around an exterior door, window sash, skirting board, pipe penetration, attic hatch, floor, ceiling, or fireplace can let outdoor air enter. The incoming air may be only a small stream, but it creates a persistent draft and forces the heating system to warm replacement air. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends checking floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, and fireplaces for leaks before choosing improvements.

Some leaks are obvious when curtains move or you can feel air on your hand. Others occur inside wall cavities or around service openings and are noticeable only on a windy day or when the room is under pressure from a fan or exhaust appliance.

Cold surfaces make you lose radiant heat

Air temperature is not the whole comfort story. Natural Resources Canada explains that a person near a cold window can radiate heat toward the glass and feel cold even when a thermometer across the room reports a reasonable air temperature. The same effect occurs beside an uninsulated exterior wall, cold floor, or poorly insulated ceiling.

This is why moving a chair 1 metre away from glazing can feel more effective than raising the thermostat. The room air has changed little, but the surfaces surrounding your body are warmer in your field of view.

Placement can create a circulation path

Warm air rises. It cools against a cold window or wall, then falls toward the floor. If a heater is placed where rising air immediately travels to a cold surface, or if furniture blocks its outlet, the occupied zone may remain cool while the ceiling becomes warm. YourHome guidance advises positioning heaters and furniture so they do not reinforce this circulation path.

Heat may not be distributed evenly

A single cold room or cold floor with no obvious draft can indicate a control or distribution problem. Radiators may need balancing, a thermostat may be sensing a warmer location, or duct dampers and vents may not be delivering the intended flow. UK heating guidance includes radiator balancing and system maintenance among measures for rooms that heat differently.

Diagnose the chill before changing the heater

Use this sequence on a cold day while the heater is running. Record what you find rather than changing several things at once.

  1. Map when the discomfort occurs. Note whether it is constant, limited to windy weather, worse after sunset, or tied to one seat or wall. A localized problem points to a leak or cold surface; a whole-room problem points toward insulation, capacity, or distribution.
  2. Locate moving air. Slowly pass the back of your hand around door and window edges, skirting boards, electrical or plumbing penetrations, attic hatches, and fireplace openings. A smoke pencil or an incense stick can reveal movement, but keep any flame or ember away from curtains and combustible materials. Do not use smoke near a fuel-burning appliance if it could disturb safe operation.
  3. Separate draft from radiant chill. Sit in the usual location, then move away from the window or exterior wall without changing the thermostat. If the chill changes sharply but no moving air is detectable, a cold surface is likely contributing.
  4. Check vertical temperature differences. Measure air temperature near the floor, at seated head height, and near the ceiling with the same thermometer. A large difference suggests stratification or obstructed circulation rather than a thermostat that simply needs to be turned up.
  5. Inspect heater airflow and controls. Confirm that grilles, radiators, registers, filters, and convectors are not covered by furniture, curtains, dust, or rugs. Check that thermostatic valves, zone controls, and dampers are set as intended.
  6. Compare rooms. If one room or an entire floor is colder while others reach the setpoint, suspect balancing, ducting, valves, sensors, or insulation differences. If every room is cold, the building envelope, control setting, or system capacity needs broader evaluation.
  7. Check outdoor conditions and operating limits. Wind exposes leaks; very cold weather can reveal weak insulation or a system that is being asked to deliver more heat than it was designed to provide. Do not infer that a larger heater is the correct remedy from one unusually cold day.

The DOE describes professional or whole-home energy assessments that may include a walk-through inspection, infrared camera work, and blower-door testing. Those methods can distinguish leakage from missing insulation and help prioritize work when a visual check is inconclusive.

Seal confirmed drafts without creating a safety problem

Choose the seal for the actual gap

For a small, confirmed gap around a movable door or window, weatherstripping for door gaps or an equivalent window seal is a practical product category. Select a profile that compresses when the door or sash closes, matches the surface, and tolerates the location’s moisture and temperature. A seal that is too thick can prevent a latch from engaging; one that is too soft or narrow may leave a path for air.

Use caulk for a stationary joint between compatible building materials. Expanding foam can fill larger concealed voids around some penetrations, but it must be used according to its label and kept away from heat sources, wiring hazards, and moving parts. Do not fill a joint that is intended to move or drain water.

Work through common leak locations

  • Exterior doors: Adjust the strike or hinges if the door is misaligned, then seal the jambs and replace a damaged sweep or threshold seal. Verify that the door still opens freely and that the lock engages.
  • Windows: Check the sash, frame, trim, and meeting rails. Temporary interior film can reduce drafts for a season, while failed permanent seals or rotten frames need repair rather than layers of tape.
  • Skirting boards and floor edges: Seal only visible joints that are not designed as expansion gaps. A cold floor may also indicate missing insulation below it, which surface caulk cannot correct.
  • Pipe and cable penetrations: Seal the annular gap with a material appropriate for the pipe temperature and the surrounding construction. Keep combustible sealants away from flues and hot surfaces.
  • Fireplaces and vents: A damper or vent may be required for safe operation. Never block a flue, combustion-air opening, or permanently required ventilation grille simply because it feels drafty.

Preserve ventilation and combustion air

Draft-proofing must not eliminate the ventilation needed for indoor air quality or for safe operation of a fuel-burning heater, boiler, stove, fireplace, or water heater. Australian Government guidance states that “Draughts introduce unwanted outdoor air into a home,” but reducing unwanted air is not the same as sealing every opening. Building codes and appliance instructions may require dedicated combustion-air openings, extract ventilation, or minimum clearances.

If you smell combustion products, see soot, experience headaches or dizziness, or notice a carbon-monoxide alarm, turn off the appliance if it is safe to do so, leave the building, and contact emergency or qualified heating services. Do not attempt to solve a combustion problem with caulk or weatherstripping.

Reduce the effect of cold windows, walls and floors

Use low-risk temporary measures

Move seating away from exterior glazing and walls, close curtains or blinds after sunset, and keep them clear of heater outlets. A lined curtain can reduce the radiant exposure of a window, but it must not cover a radiator, convector, or portable heater unless the appliance instructions explicitly allow the arrangement. A rug can make a cold floor feel less uncomfortable, but it does not replace insulation and must not obstruct a floor register.

For a window that is sound but cold, an interior insulating treatment can reduce radiant loss. Leave required egress windows operable and maintain clearances around heaters. Do not apply an improvised covering that traps moisture between layers or hides condensation damage.

Plan permanent insulation by climate and construction

Insulation type and thickness depend on climate, wall or roof assembly, moisture exposure, and local building practice. Australian government guidance advises checking electrical safety and clearances before insulation work. An insulation upgrade should therefore be designed around the building, not selected solely by its advertised R-value.

Before adding insulation, investigate dampness, roof leaks, pest damage, and unsafe wiring. Covering a wet wall can conceal deterioration; placing insulation against a hot flue or recessed light can create a fire hazard. In a rented home or a building with shared walls, obtain the owner’s approval and use a qualified installer where regulations require it.

Improve heater placement and room circulation

Keep the heat path open

Leave the heater’s intake and outlet unobstructed by sofas, cabinets, curtains, laundry, or storage. Furniture placed directly above a radiator or in front of a floor register can absorb or redirect heat. Keep portable heaters on a stable, level surface with the clearances specified by the manufacturer, and never use an extension arrangement that conflicts with the appliance instructions.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

When possible, place a heat source on an exterior wall or below a window so rising warm air offsets the descending current from the cold surface. This is a design principle, not permission to relocate a fixed appliance yourself: fuel lines, electrical circuits, flues, and required clearances must be handled by an authorized professional.

Use fans carefully

A low-speed ceiling fan set to its winter or reverse direction can mix stratified air in some rooms. A small circulation fan can also move warm air from a high, open area toward the occupied zone, but aim it to mix air rather than blow a cold stream directly at people. Keep fans away from wet areas and ensure they cannot contact curtains or heater surfaces.

Do not use a fan to compensate for a blocked vent, a malfunctioning heater, or a suspected combustion issue. Mixing contaminated air faster is not a repair.

Arrange furniture around the cold-air return

In forced-air systems, a return grille hidden behind furniture can reduce circulation and cause the heater to shut off before distant areas warm. Keep returns and supply registers clear, and avoid closing numerous registers to force more heat into one room; that can raise duct pressure and upset system performance. If a register delivers little air while others are strong, inspect the damper and duct path rather than simply raising the thermostat.

Correct uneven heating and control problems

Radiator and hydronic systems

If radiators on the same system heat at noticeably different rates, balancing may be needed. A qualified technician can adjust lockshield valves or other balancing controls so flow is shared among rooms. Bleeding a radiator may help only when air is trapped and the system design permits it; repeated cold spots, leaks, pressure loss, or noisy pipes require professional diagnosis.

Keep thermostatic radiator valves uncovered and away from a heat source that could make them read artificially warm. A thermostat located in a sunny hallway, above a radiator, or near a draft can stop the system while another room remains cold.

Forced-air systems

Replace or clean filters on the schedule specified for the system, verify that supply registers and returns are open, and check for obvious disconnected or crushed ducts in accessible areas. Leaky or poorly insulated ducts in an attic, crawlspace, or garage can lose heat before it reaches the room. Duct sealing and redesign should be assessed by a qualified technician, especially where asbestos, electrical wiring, or combustion equipment is nearby.

Heat pumps and other controlled systems

Confirm that the system is in its intended heating mode and that scheduled setbacks, zoning, and occupancy sensors are not lowering output when the room is occupied. Some systems deliver steadier, lower-temperature airflow rather than short bursts of very hot air; judging performance by outlet temperature alone can be misleading. If the system runs continuously yet cannot maintain the setpoint, have airflow, refrigerant, controls, and building heat loss checked rather than selecting a larger unit by guesswork.

All rooms cold during normal winter weather Envelope heat loss, control error, maintenance issue, or inadequate system design Check leaks and controls, then obtain a professional heat-loss and equipment assessment.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a larger heater first. Oversizing can leave the underlying draft, cold surface, or distribution fault untouched and may create cycling, electrical, or combustion risks.
  • Do not block every vent or gap. Some openings provide required ventilation or combustion air.
  • Do not cover a heater with furniture, laundry, or curtains. Obstruction can cause overheating or reduce useful heat delivery.
  • Do not use unapproved fuel-burning heaters indoors. Follow the appliance’s installation, flue, clearance, and ventilation requirements.
  • Do not insulate over unresolved moisture or unsafe wiring. Fix the building defect and verify electrical clearances first.
  • Do not rely on a single thermometer. Measure at the height and location where people actually sit, while noting drafts and radiant exposure.

When to arrange professional help

Contact a qualified heating professional when a fuel-burning appliance shows soot, unusual odors, flame instability, repeated shutdowns, or suspected flue problems; when electrical components become hot or trip protection; or when you cannot maintain temperature despite clear airflow and closed, intact openings.

An energy assessor is useful when several rooms are uncomfortable, the building is old or recently renovated, or you are considering insulation and air-sealing work. Ask what the assessment includes. The DOE lists walk-through checks, infrared imaging, and blower-door testing as possible methods. A useful report should identify the location and significance of leaks, insulation gaps, moisture risks, ventilation requirements, and distribution faults, then rank improvements rather than simply prescribing more heating capacity.

Local rules determine who may alter wiring, gas lines, flues, ventilation openings, insulation near electrical equipment, or shared building elements. Building codes, climate conditions, and assistance programs vary by location, so use local requirements and the appliance manual as the final authority.

A practical order of operations

  1. Start with observation: mark the coldest seat, note wind and weather, and identify whether the sensation is moving air, cold radiation, or general low temperature.
  2. Inspect and measure: check the common leak locations, compare floor-to-ceiling temperatures, and verify that outlets, returns, radiators, and controls are unobstructed.
  3. Make reversible changes: move furniture, adjust curtains safely, clear vents, and test whether the occupied area improves without changing the thermostat.
  4. Seal only confirmed, nonessential gaps: use compatible caulk, foam, or weatherstripping while preserving required ventilation and combustion air.
  5. Address the envelope: investigate insulation, glazing, floors, and moisture before selecting permanent materials or opening walls.
  6. Correct distribution: balance radiators, inspect ducts, verify sensors and zoning, and schedule maintenance where controls or equipment are suspect.
  7. Reassess before upgrading equipment: if the room remains cold after envelope and distribution issues are addressed, obtain a qualified heat-loss and equipment evaluation.
