If your refrigerator is not cooling, first verify the actual temperature with an appliance thermometer and protect perishable food. Then check power, temperature settings, airflow, door closure, the surrounding temperature, and—only when your model’s manual allows it—accessible condenser coils. If the refrigerator remains above a safe temperature after those checks, arrange manufacturer support or qualified appliance service.
Food-safety guidance sets the refrigerator target at 40°F (4°C) or below and the freezer target at 0°F (-18°C) or below. A number shown on the control panel is a setting, not proof that food has reached that temperature.
1. Confirm that the refrigerator is actually too warm
Measure the compartment, not just the display
Put an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator compartment and use a suitable thermometer for the freezer. Check the reading after the thermometer has had time to stabilize, following its instructions. Do not rely on whether the interior feels cold: food temperature and room-temperature air can feel misleading.

| Compartment | Food-safety target | Example manufacturer setting | What the number means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 40°F (4°C) or below | Frigidaire suggests 37°F; LG USA Support cites 34°F–37°F in an article dated July 6, 2026 | The control is a target setting for that model, not a measured food temperature |
| Freezer | 0°F (-18°C) or below | Frigidaire suggests 0°F | Use the owner’s manual for the model’s recommended setting and adjustment method |
Manufacturer setpoints differ because designs, sensors, displays, and operating conditions differ. Use your model’s manual for the normal setting, but use the FoodSafety.gov limits to judge whether food is being held safely.

Protect food while you investigate
Keep the doors closed as much as possible. If the refrigerator is above 40°F (4°C), move high-risk perishables to another reliably cold refrigerator or an iced cooler when one is available. Record the temperature and, if known, when it first rose. Smell, appearance, and taste cannot establish safety.
2. Work through the safe owner checks
Check power and operating modes
- Confirm the plug is fully seated and that the household outlet has power. Check the circuit breaker or a nearby appliance that uses the same outlet, but do not bypass electrical protection.
- Look at the refrigerator display and interior lights. A dark display can indicate loss of power, a control lock, or a model-specific energy mode; a lit display does not prove that the cooling system is working.
- Check for a control lock, vacation mode, demo/showroom mode, or an accidentally changed temperature. The labels and button sequence vary by model, so use the owner’s manual rather than a generic reset combination.
Verify the selected temperatures
Set the refrigerator and freezer to the values specified by the manual. Change only one setting at a time so you can tell whether the temperature responds. Some manufacturers advise allowing up to 24 hours for a new setting or a newly installed appliance to stabilize. Frigidaire and Sub-Zero give that 24-hour guidance for applicable models. Treat it as a model-specific waiting period, and do not use it to justify keeping food above a safe temperature.
Restore clear airflow inside
Cold air must circulate through the compartment. Move packages away from visible supply or return vents, and avoid packing shelves so tightly that air cannot move around them. In many designs, cold air is produced in or routed through the freezer before reaching the fresh-food compartment, so an obstruction or heavy frost in the freezer can affect refrigerator temperature.
Reseat shelves, bins, and drawers. A drawer that is slightly out of position can block a vent or keep the door from closing. Do not chip at frost with a knife or other sharp object; if heavy ice is obstructing an air path, follow the manual’s defrost procedure or request service.

Check complete door closure and the gasket
Look for bottles, shelves, drawers, or food packages that hold the door open even slightly. Close the door slowly and verify that it latches without being pushed. Inspect the gasket around the entire perimeter for tears, distortion, loosened sections, or debris.
Frigidaire describes a quick screening method: close the door on a dollar bill and feel for some resistance when pulling it out. It also recommends cleaning the gasket with warm soapy water. This is one manufacturer’s screening technique, not a conclusive test for every seal failure. A gasket can appear intact yet fail to seal because the door is misaligned or the cabinet is not level; those conditions require model-specific instructions.
Consider the room and recent changes
Ask what changed immediately before the temperature rose:

- The doors have been opened unusually often or left ajar.
- The freezer or refrigerator was recently set colder or warmer.
Warm food and frequent door openings temporarily add heat. An out-of-range room can prevent the appliance from operating as designed. Correct the condition, close the doors, and monitor the thermometer rather than judging recovery by touch.

Clean condenser coils only when permitted
Dust on accessible condenser coils can reduce heat transfer, but coil location and access vary widely. Read the owner’s manual first. If it specifically permits owner cleaning and the coils are accessible without removing a service panel, unplug the refrigerator before starting.
Frigidaire Appliance Parts describes using a soft-bristle brush or dedicated condenser-coil brush and/or a vacuum nozzle. That publisher suggests cleaning every six to 12 months, but the appropriate interval depends on the model, pets, dust, and room conditions. Do not remove panels, reach near exposed wiring or moving fans, or clean hot components. If accessing the coils requires disassembly, stop and arrange service.
3. Use the symptom to choose the next check—not to declare a diagnosis
| What you observe | Checks that make sense first | What you cannot conclude from it alone |
|---|---|---|
| Both refrigerator and freezer are warm | Power, operating mode, temperature settings, room conditions, door closure, and permitted coil access | That the compressor, refrigerant charge, or control board has failed |
| Freezer is cold but refrigerator is warm | Clear vents, check for overpacking or frost blocking airflow, and verify that the refrigerator door seals | That a particular fan or damper is defective |
| Temperature rose after loading groceries | Keep doors closed, reduce additional loading, and monitor the thermometer during recovery | That the appliance has a permanent fault |
| Temperature rose after moving or installing the unit | Confirm power, level and door closure, ambient range, and the model’s stabilization instructions | That waiting 24 hours is safe if food is already above 40°F (4°C) |
| Cooling remains inadequate after owner checks | Gather temperature readings and contact manufacturer support or a qualified appliance technician | The exact failed component without model-specific inspection |
Symptoms can overlap. A warm refrigerator may involve airflow, a sensor, a fan, a defrost system, a sealed system, or another component. Do not infer a refrigerant leak, failed compressor, fan failure, or control-board defect from sound, frost pattern, or temperature alone.
4. Food safety when cooling is impaired
Know the time and temperature limits
FoodSafety.gov says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours during a power outage. Its guidance says to discard refrigerated perishable food after four hours without power and to discard specified perishables that have been at 40°F (4°C) or above for more than two hours.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Those figures address outage and known temperature exposure. A mechanical failure may have started at an unknown time, so do not automatically apply a four-hour clock unless you know when the appliance stopped maintaining temperature. When elapsed time or food temperature is uncertain, consult the official FoodSafety.gov food-safety chart and err on the side of discarding high-risk perishables.
Do not taste-test questionable food
FoodSafety.gov’s instruction is explicit: “After a power outage never taste food to determine its safety.” The same principle applies when a refrigerator has malfunctioned. Tasting, smelling, or checking appearance cannot reliably detect every hazardous change.
Keep the doors closed and separate food
Each opening adds warm air and makes the temperature history harder to assess. Keep a cooler or second refrigerator for food that is still within safe limits, and avoid mixing newly chilled items with food whose exposure time is unknown. Continue using a thermometer to decide whether conditions are improving.

Check warranty and service eligibility first
Have the model and serial numbers, purchase date, measured refrigerator and freezer temperatures, error messages, and a timeline of what changed ready. Ask whether the appliance is under warranty and whether the manufacturer requires an authorized provider. Do not disassemble a sealed system or electrical compartment; unauthorized work can create safety risks and may affect warranty coverage.
What a technician may need to inspect
A technician can test components that an owner should not diagnose from symptoms alone, including fans, sensors, defrost equipment, controls, the compressor, and the sealed refrigerant system. The appropriate repair depends on the model and measured fault. There is no reliable generic repair price, repair time, or repair-versus-replacement threshold for every refrigerator, so obtain a model-specific assessment.
6. Prevent a repeat temperature rise
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer at the manual’s recommended settings, and verify them periodically with thermometers.
- Leave visible vents clear and avoid filling shelves so tightly that air cannot circulate.
- Check that doors close fully after loading groceries and wipe gasket surfaces clean.
- Keep the appliance within the ambient-temperature range specified for its installation.
- Follow the manual’s instructions for coil access and cleaning; never assume every model has owner-accessible coils.
- Record unusual temperature changes, power interruptions, and error codes so service can identify patterns.
Bottom line
Measure first, protect food second, then check power, settings, airflow, door seals, installation conditions, and only permitted coil maintenance. If the measured temperature remains unsafe or the next step requires electrical or sealed-system work, stop troubleshooting and use manufacturer support or qualified service.
