A missing 5G icon usually has a straightforward explanation: your location may not have usable 5G, the exact phone model may not support your carrier’s bands, the line or SIM/eSIM may not be provisioned for 5G, or a setting may be selecting LTE. Work through those checks in that order. A 5G-capable phone is designed to fall back to 4G/LTE when 5G is unavailable, so LTE by itself does not prove that the phone is defective.

What has to be in place for 5G to work

5G is not enabled by the handset alone. The network, account, SIM or eSIM, and phone configuration must all agree. A model marketed as 5G-capable may still lack the frequency bands used by a particular carrier, and a compatible model can remain on LTE if the line is not provisioned correctly.

Usable 5G coverage at your location

Your carrier must have a 5G signal where the phone is being used. Coverage maps are estimates, and walls, building materials, terrain, congestion, and local network conditions can produce a different result at a specific room or address. A phone can show 5G outdoors and LTE indoors, or connect in one neighborhood and not another.

A phone variant that supports the carrier’s network

Check the exact model number and regional or carrier variant, not just the product family name. Different variants can have different radios and supported bands. AT&T, for example, identifies n77 for its mid-band 5G+ layer and n260 for its high-band 5G+ layer. Those are examples for specified AT&T services, not universal requirements for every 5G network.

A plan and line with 5G access

The account must be eligible for 5G. A phone can be fully compatible while the specific line remains on a plan that does not include 5G or has not been provisioned for it. Ask the carrier to check the exact phone number, plan, and account status rather than relying on the name of the plan alone.

A supported, correctly provisioned SIM or eSIM

The SIM or eSIM identifies the line to the network. Samsung lists a non-compatible SIM and a plan without 5G among possible reasons that a capable Galaxy phone will not connect. Do not replace a SIM automatically; have the carrier confirm whether the existing SIM or eSIM is supported and provisioned first.

Phone settings that permit 5G

Mobile data must be on, the intended line must be selected on a dual-SIM phone, and the preferred network mode must allow 5G. Menu names vary by model, carrier, country, and software version. Some phones offer an automatic mode that uses 5G when it is useful and LTE when it is not; others also offer an always-on 5G choice.

Diagnose the problem before changing anything

The pattern of the failure separates a coverage issue from an account, compatibility, or handset issue. Use these comparisons before buying a new phone or resetting network data.

The problem follows the phone across locations while another compatible phone works Phone-specific compatibility, configuration, or hardware Test your SIM/eSIM in an approved device only when the carrier says the line supports that test.

Step-by-step fixes

  1. Test the location. Go outdoors or to another nearby area where your carrier advertises 5G. Wait briefly after moving, then check the status indicator and try a simple web page. A coverage map is a planning tool, not a guarantee of service inside a particular building.
  2. Compare with another phone on the same network. If another customer’s compatible phone connects to 5G at the same spot, coverage is less likely to be the cause. If both phones remain on LTE, the local signal or network may simply not be offering usable 5G there.
  3. Record the exact handset identity. Open the phone’s About screen and note the model number, software version, and carrier or regional variant. Give those details to the carrier or manufacturer when checking band compatibility. The words 5G on a retail box are not enough to establish compatibility with every carrier.
  4. Confirm the plan and line. Contact the carrier and ask two separate questions: does this plan include 5G, and is 5G provisioned on this exact line? Request an account-side check even if the plan name appears to include 5G.
  5. Have the SIM or eSIM checked. Ask whether the installed SIM or eSIM is supported for the carrier’s 5G service and correctly associated with the line. If the carrier recommends a replacement or eSIM re-download, follow its activation procedure; do not erase an eSIM first unless instructed, because doing so can leave the line without service until it is reactivated.
  6. Review mobile-data and 5G settings. Make sure mobile data is enabled, the intended line is selected, and the network mode includes 5G. Set network selection to automatic unless the carrier has given you a specific manual setting.
  7. Refresh the connection. Turn airplane mode on for a short period, turn it off, and wait for the phone to register again. If that does not help, restart the phone. These low-risk steps can clear a temporary registration state, but they cannot add missing bands or change an ineligible plan.
  8. Install available software and carrier updates. Check for an operating-system update and any carrier-settings update offered by the phone. Keep the phone connected to power or Wi-Fi during a major system update and retry 5G after it finishes.
  9. Reset network settings only after the simpler checks. Use the device-specific network-reset command if the problem persists after a setting change or repeated registration failures. A reset can remove saved network configuration, so make sure you know the Wi-Fi passwords and any carrier-specific settings you may need before proceeding.
  10. Escalate to the right party. Ask the carrier to investigate provisioning, local outages, coverage, and the device’s eligibility. If the carrier confirms all of those and the issue follows the phone to multiple locations, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.

Check 5G settings on common phone types

iPhone

On recent iPhones, open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions). Confirm that cellular data is on and that the correct line is selected if more than one SIM or eSIM is installed. Open the data-options section and look for Voice & Data. Depending on the model and carrier, choices can include 5G Auto and 5G On.

5G Auto lets the phone choose between 5G and LTE based on availability and conditions. 5G On requests 5G whenever it is available and may affect battery use. If neither option is present, the carrier, model, region, or software may not make 5G available to that line. Apple explains that the 5G indicator appears when the provider’s 5G network is available, the plan is eligible, and the iPhone can connect; the absence of the indicator alone is not proof of a failed radio.

Android phones, including Samsung Galaxy models

Android menu labels differ substantially. A common path is Settings > Connections or Network & internet > Mobile networks, followed by Network mode or Preferred network type. Choose an option that includes 5G, such as an automatic 5G/LTE mode, rather than an LTE-only option. Samsung’s wording and location can change with the Galaxy model, carrier firmware, and Android version.

On a dual-SIM Android phone, open the SIM manager and confirm which line is assigned to mobile data. The phone may show 5G on one line only, or the second line may be limited while both SIMs are active. If the 5G choice is missing, ask the carrier whether that model and SIM are approved before assuming the setting is hidden by a software fault.

Automatic network selection

Leave network selection on automatic during diagnosis. A manually selected network can prevent registration after you move or after the carrier changes local service. Videotron’s support guidance, for example, recommends automatic network selection while documenting 5G modes such as 5G Auto and 5G On. The exact labels on your phone may be different.

When LTE instead of 5G is normal

A 5G phone is expected to use 4G/LTE outside usable 5G coverage. AT&T summarizes this behavior by noting that a 5G device still works when it is not in a 5G area. The phone may also choose LTE when 5G is weak, when the selected mode is automatic, or when indoor conditions make LTE the more reliable connection.

Do not judge the connection solely by the icon. A 5G symbol confirms that the phone has registered on a 5G layer at that moment; it does not guarantee a particular speed, signal strength, or indoor reach. Conversely, an LTE symbol does not by itself identify a hardware failure. Test in a known coverage area and verify account and device eligibility before treating the icon as evidence of a defect.

How to tell whether the phone or carrier is responsible

Signs that point to coverage or a local network condition

  • The phone connects to 5G in another neighborhood or outdoors but not at the problem location.
  • Other phones on the same carrier also remain on LTE in that spot.
  • The status changes when you move a short distance, enter a building, or leave it.

Signs that point to the account or SIM/eSIM

  • Another compatible phone on the same carrier connects at the same location while your line does not.
  • The issue began after a plan change, line transfer, SIM swap, or eSIM activation.
  • The carrier can see the phone but reports that 5G access is not enabled or the SIM is not supported.

Signs that point to the handset or its configuration

  • The issue follows the phone across several locations where another phone connects.
  • The exact model or regional variant does not list the carrier’s required bands.
  • Mobile data is off, the wrong dual-SIM line is selected, or the preferred network mode is LTE-only.

Band compatibility: why the exact model matters

Networks identify radio bands with labels such as n77 and n260. A phone can support one carrier’s 5G deployment and lack the bands needed for another carrier or for a particular layer of the same carrier’s network. This is why a general statement such as “this phone has 5G” is insufficient for a compatibility check.

Use the manufacturer’s specification for your exact model number and the carrier’s compatibility checker or support team. Treat a carrier’s band examples narrowly: AT&T’s n77 and n260 references describe its specified 5G+ services, not a checklist that every 5G phone or network must meet. If the carrier cannot approve the model, changing settings will not add the missing radio support.

Network reset: when and how to use it safely

A network reset is a later-stage fix for persistent registration or configuration problems, particularly when the trouble started after changing a network setting. Verizon includes network-settings reset in its troubleshooting guidance. Because reset menus and effects vary, read the confirmation screen for your model before accepting it.

On many phones, the command is under a path similar to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset on iPhone, or Settings > System > Reset options on Android. These are examples, not universal paths. Search the phone’s built-in settings for reset network settings if the menu is organized differently.

  • Write down Wi-Fi credentials and any special network settings you will need afterward.
  • Do not choose a full factory reset; that is a different operation that erases personal content.
  • After the reset, restart if prompted, re-enable the intended mobile-data line, and check the 5G mode again.
  • If service does not return, contact the carrier for provisioning rather than repeating the reset.

When replacing the phone makes sense

Buy a replacement only after the carrier confirms that your current model lacks the required network support or cannot be approved. A new handset will not fix a missing 5G entitlement, an unsupported SIM/eSIM, poor coverage, or an LTE-only setting. If the current phone is compatible and the carrier finds an account-side problem, correcting the line is the more direct solution.

Before purchasing, provide the seller or carrier with the exact model identifier and ask whether that specific variant supports the required bands and 5G services in your country. Keep the old phone available until the new device is activated and the line has successfully registered.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the icon is a warranty test. LTE can be the correct fallback and does not establish that the phone is broken.
  • Checking only the product name. Regional and carrier variants can differ even when the family name is identical.
  • Replacing the SIM first. Ask the carrier to verify compatibility and provisioning before removing a working SIM or deleting an eSIM.
  • Forcing 5G On everywhere. An automatic mode may be more appropriate where coverage is variable; forcing a mode cannot create a signal.
  • Resetting everything immediately. Start with location, account, SIM/eSIM, and settings checks so you do not lose saved network configuration unnecessarily.
  • Using a coverage map as a guarantee. Maps are estimates and may not represent indoor reception at your exact address.

A short decision path

  1. Does 5G appear elsewhere? If yes, investigate local coverage or indoor reception. If no, continue.
  2. Does another phone on the same carrier connect nearby? If no, ask the carrier about local service. If yes, continue.
  3. Is your exact model approved for that carrier’s bands? If no, the phone is incompatible with the needed service. If yes, continue.
  4. Is the plan and line provisioned for 5G, and is the SIM/eSIM supported? If no, have the carrier correct the account or activation. If yes, continue.
  5. Are mobile data, the intended SIM, automatic network selection, and a 5G-capable mode enabled? Correct the setting, refresh the connection, and retest.
  6. Does the issue remain across locations after those checks? Use a network reset with the device-specific instructions, then escalate to the carrier or manufacturer.
