Your phone’s location is an estimate, not a reading from GPS alone. It can combine satellite signals with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, and device sensors. Obstructed signals, approximate app permissions, or a map showing a last-known position can all make the result look wrong. Start by checking whether the issue affects one app or several, then follow the matching steps below.
How your phone estimates its location
Phones use whatever location signals are available. Android’s Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, and sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. Apple says Location Services can use GPS, Bluetooth, local Wi-Fi, and cellular networks. The available inputs depend on the device and its surroundings; Google notes that not all devices have wireless signals, GPS, or sensor data.
GPS can be less useful indoors, in a parking garage, or among tall buildings that obstruct or reflect signals. In those conditions, the phone may have to rely more heavily on other inputs, and the position can be uncertain or drift. A network connection can also help location services use available information.

- Only one app shows the wrong position: Check that app’s location permission and precision setting. The problem may be app-specific, though that alone does not prove the app is at fault.
- The marker is fuzzy or wanders indoors: The estimate may be uncertain because of the signal environment. Test again outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
- The map shows where you were earlier: The app may not have a current fix. In Google Maps, a gray or missing blue dot can mean it cannot determine your current location and may be showing the last place visited.
- The marker is right, but an address or business is wrong: That points to map content, not necessarily your phone’s location hardware. Report or correct the place information in the map service.
- Several apps remain substantially wrong outdoors: Check permissions and connectivity, then restart the phone. If the problem persists across apps, seek device-maker support or qualified diagnostics rather than assuming a hardware failure.
Check location permissions and precision
Android
- Make sure the phone’s Location setting is on and the affected app is allowed to use location. Menu wording varies by Android version and manufacturer.
- On Android 12 and later, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy and review Improve Location Accuracy. This device-wide feature is separate from an app’s precise-location permission. See Google’s Android Location Accuracy guidance.
- Review the affected app’s own location permission and allow precise location if it needs an exact position. Approximate access may be sufficient for apps that do not need to pinpoint you.
- In Location Services, check Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. These can help apps obtain better location information when available.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Make sure Location Services is on, then select the affected app and review its access.
- Turn on Precise Location for an app that needs your exact position. An app with approximate access may intentionally receive a less specific location. Apple explains the controls in its iPhone Location Services guide.
Read the Google Maps location indicator
In Google Maps, the blue dot marks your estimated position. A light-blue circle around it shows the area where you may be; the smaller the circle, the more certain the app is about your location. A large halo therefore signals uncertainty, not a precise error distance. If the dot is gray or absent, Maps may not have a current fix and can show your last-known location instead.

Google identifies parking garages and tall buildings as conditions that can interfere with the estimate. Move outdoors with a clearer view of the sky, check that the phone has a connection, and give the app a chance to update. Consult Google Maps’ location accuracy guidance for the blue-dot indicators.
Refresh Apple Maps and correct map information
For Apple Maps, first confirm Location Services is enabled and Maps has access. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the date, time, and time zone are correct; ensuring mobile data or Wi-Fi is active; closing and reopening Maps; and restarting the device if needed. Its steps are in Apple Maps troubleshooting.

- 👮 Data Encryption – With the help of Google's technology, all location information is encrypted
If your location marker is where you are but a road, address, or business listing is misplaced, report the map issue or correct the place details. A map-data error does not by itself indicate a GPS problem.
When to seek device support
A single inaccurate reading—especially indoors or near tall buildings—is not enough to diagnose a failed GPS antenna or other hardware. If several apps continue to show a substantially wrong position outdoors after you have checked permissions, connectivity, and restarted the phone, contact the device maker or a qualified repair professional for diagnostics. The symptoms alone cannot establish which component, if any, has failed.
