Blurry phone photos usually come from a smudged lens, movement, poor light, a subject too close for the active camera, or an obstructing accessory—not necessarily a broken camera. Start by cleaning every lens and taking a test photo without accessories, then use the blur pattern and your phone model to choose the next check.
First, identify what looks blurry
- A moving subject is smeared, but stationary edges are clear: the subject likely moved during the exposure.
- The whole frame is smeared: the phone may have moved while the photo was taken.
- One subject is sharp and the background is soft: this can be normal focus behavior, not a fault.
- Close subjects are soft, especially at high zoom: the active camera may be outside its close-focus range.
- The view looks hazy, streaked, dark, or uneven: check for a dirty lens, glare, condensation, lighting effects, or an obstruction.
These patterns are clues, not definitive diagnoses. Samsung notes that both camera movement and subject movement can readily create blur, even when focus is otherwise correct. Samsung’s Galaxy camera troubleshooting guide and Apple’s camera support guide both recommend basic checks before seeking service.
Try these low-risk fixes in order
1. Clean all camera lenses
Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth on every front and rear camera lens. Fingerprints, dust, or smudges can reduce clarity and interfere with autofocus. Samsung notes that a Galaxy may use additional lenses for preview, rangefinding, or autofocus, so cleaning only the lens you think is active may not be enough. Cleaning will not fix blur caused by motion, an unsuitable focus distance, condensation, or damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Take a photo without accessories
Remove the case, lens protector, film, magnetic mount, converter, or other accessory that could overlap the camera or flash, then take a test photo. Apple flags accessories that obstruct the camera or flash and magnets placed near the camera; it also notes that some accessories can contribute to motion blur in low light. Samsung warns that a camera protector can cause focus issues or light distortion. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that every case or protector causes problems.

3. Hold still and give the subject more light
Brace the phone with both hands and avoid moving it as you press the shutter. If the subject is moving, try again when it pauses. Add indirect light or change the angle so a bright light source is not shining directly into the camera. Difficult lighting can affect focus and exposure; an underexposed picture may look dark and fuzzy or spotty. Stabilizing the phone cannot stop a moving subject from moving during the shot.
4. Step back from close subjects
Each camera has a working focus range. If a nearby subject will not sharpen, move the phone farther away and reframe rather than repeatedly tapping the screen. Samsung’s current U.S. guidance gives these general minimum distances and one model-specific example; they are Samsung guidance, not universal distances for every phone or camera generation:

|---|---|
| Standard lens | At least 12 inches |
| Telephoto lens | At least 20 inches |
| Ultra Wide lens | At least 4 inches |
| Hybrid Optical 10x Zoom on some devices | Best results from 32 inches |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra 5x telephoto | Minimum 30 cm |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra 5x telephoto | Minimum 80 cm |
Samsung says high zoom can switch to a telephoto camera designed for distant subjects, leaving a nearby object out of focus. Check the guidance for your exact model rather than applying another phone’s distance. Samsung’s U.S. support page lists the distances and may update its model examples.
Galaxy-specific behaviors that can look like a fault
Close-up edges look soft
On supported Galaxy devices, Focus enhancer can automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera to reduce blur around a close subject. Samsung describes toggling it with the flower icon in the Camera preview. Availability and controls vary by model and software, so the icon may not appear on every Galaxy.

High zoom will not focus on something nearby
Try stepping back. At high zoom, a Galaxy may select a telephoto camera with a minimum focus distance unsuitable for a nearby subject. Use the distance for your model and lens, not a general assumption that more zoom will make close details clearer.
Only part of a 200 MP image looks sharp
Samsung says focus range in 200 MP mode varies with aperture, shooting distance, and subject position; some areas may appear blurred as a normal optical characteristic. That appearance alone does not establish a defect.

Tracking autofocus seems to hold onto the wrong target
Samsung’s Ireland focus guide says Tracking auto-focus locks onto a selected person or item for three seconds. If that behavior is getting in the way, turn Tracking auto-focus off in the Camera settings; the exact control can vary by model and software. Samsung’s focus guide includes device-specific troubleshooting and notes that menus may differ.

Bright streaks, indoor dark lines, or a foggy view
- Light streaks or glare: Samsung says lens flare is more likely in bright conditions or at night with many light sources, and can be more noticeable with a dirty lens or high zoom. Clean the lens and adjust the angle or lighting. An AI editing tool may remove an unwanted artifact from a saved image, but it does not correct the cause during capture.
- Dark lines under indoor lighting: Samsung identifies lighting frequency as a possible cause. For this specific symptom, its guidance suggests trying Pro mode and a shutter speed of 1/120 second or lower. This is not a general blur setting, and Pro mode availability varies.
- Fog or haze: internal condensation can form when temperatures change. Let it clear naturally; do not open the phone or apply heat.
These Galaxy feature details and symptom-specific suggestions come from Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance; feature availability varies across devices.

When to check software or seek service
For iPhone or iPad
- Remove accessories that might block the camera or flash, clean the lenses, and take another photo.
- Restart the device and install the latest iOS or iPadOS update available for it.
- Check whether the issue affects the front camera, rear camera, or both.
- If the camera still does not work properly, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Apple’s support steps describe this escalation.
For Galaxy phones
- Update the device software and camera-related apps.
- Check lens cleanliness, remove obstructing accessories, and turn off Tracking auto-focus if its behavior matches the problem.
- Reset Camera settings, then test again.
- Test in Safe Mode to check whether a third-party app may be involved.
- If focus remains faulty, contact Samsung support or use an authorized service route. Samsung’s instructions and menus vary by device and software version. See Samsung’s Galaxy focus troubleshooting guide.
What the iPhone and Galaxy guidance does—and does not—show
Both manufacturers recommend cleaning lenses and checking for obstruction, then direct users toward software checks and service if the problem persists. Samsung’s guidance adds Galaxy-specific close-focus distances and features such as Focus enhancer, high-zoom lens switching, Camera settings reset, and Safe Mode. Apple’s cited article emphasizes removing accessories, restarting, updating, and checking front versus rear cameras.
These are troubleshooting paths, not controlled camera comparisons. They do not establish that iPhones or Galaxy phones are generally more prone to blurry pictures. For a particular photo, the useful next step is to match its blur pattern to the checks above and confirm the exact phone model and active camera.
