If you can’t hear your phone ring, first check Silent or vibrate mode, ringtone volume, and Do Not Disturb or another Focus mode. If only certain callers are affected—or calls go straight to voicemail—check call screening, blocked numbers, and call forwarding instead. The right steps depend on your phone and software version.
First, identify what happens when someone calls
Ask someone to call and note the result. If the incoming-call screen appears but you hear nothing, the call is reaching the phone; focus first on sound settings and output. If calls from particular people are missing, investigate filtering or blocked contacts. If calls go straight to voicemail, check the phone’s call-handling settings and, if those do not explain it, cellular service and carrier handling.
Check sound and interruption settings
Silent mode and ringtone volume
Turn off Silent or vibrate mode and raise ringtone volume. On a Samsung Galaxy, close apps and stop media playback before changing volume: Samsung notes that media or connected headphones can affect ringtone volume. Check that a ringtone is selected as well as making sure its volume is audible. Samsung’s ringtone troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Do Not Disturb, Focus, and other modes
On iPhone, open Control Centre and check whether Focus is active, including Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work. On Android, swipe down to Quick Settings and check Do Not Disturb and any other active Mode. Look for schedules, too: a mode that turns on automatically can silence calls even when you did not enable it immediately before they arrived. Apple and Google provide platform-specific steps for iPhone Focus and Android Modes.

If calls go to voicemail or only some callers are missed
Review call screening and blocked contacts
On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Phone and review unknown-caller screening, call filtering, and blocked contacts. These settings are more relevant when the issue affects unknown or selected callers than when every incoming call is simply inaudible. See Apple’s guidance for calls that do not ring or go to voicemail.
On Samsung Galaxy, check blocked callers and call forwarding. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software version; use the device maker’s instructions if a setting is not where expected. Samsung includes these checks in its ringtone troubleshooting guidance.

Check cellular service and Wi-Fi Calling
If calls go straight to voicemail after you have checked relevant phone settings, weak cellular coverage or carrier-specific call handling may be involved. Apple recommends updating iOS and checking Silent mode and Focus as part of its troubleshooting. It also notes that Wi-Fi Calling can place calls over Wi-Fi when mobile service is weak or unavailable, but the option depends on carrier support and may not appear if the provider does not offer it. Test whether the phone can play other sounds
Play another sound, such as a ringtone preview or other audio, and account for headphones or other connected audio devices. If the phone is silent only for incoming calls, keep troubleshooting call settings. If it cannot play any sounds, a speaker problem becomes more plausible; Samsung recommends checking the speaker when no sound is heard. One missed call by itself does not establish a hardware fault.

Android menu paths can differ
Google’s instructions for Android Modes apply to Android 14 and later in some cases. Earlier versions and manufacturers may use different labels, menus, or controls. If the described Quick Settings option is missing, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific phone rather than assuming the setting is unavailable.
