Two connected Ethernet ports do not automatically combine into one faster internet connection. If your PC slows down when both cables are plugged in, Windows may be choosing between competing routes or default gateways, the adapters may be connected to the same network without a supported team, or one link may have negotiated at an unexpectedly low speed. Deliberate NIC teaming or link aggregation is a separate, hardware- and configuration-dependent feature.

The correct fix depends on what each port connects to, which adapter has a gateway, the route and interface metrics, the negotiated link rates, and whether the switch and drivers support teaming. Disconnecting one cable can hide the symptom, but it does not identify the cause.

What two Ethernet ports actually do

Each Ethernet adapter is an independent network interface. Plugging both into a router or switch gives Windows two possible paths; it does not create a single 2-Gbps pipe. Ordinary adapters remain separate unless the operating system, drivers, NICs and network equipment are deliberately configured for teaming or link aggregation.

That distinction matters because the word “faster” can mean three different things:

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
  • Failover: keeping connectivity available if one cable, port or switch path fails.
  • Aggregate throughput: serving multiple clients or destinations at the same time.
  • Single-flow speed: increasing one download, upload or file-transfer session.

A supported team can help with the first two goals. It is not a guarantee that one internet flow will run twice as fast. Intel’s documentation describes gains when traffic is distributed across multiple destinations; some modes also require a switch that supports the relevant aggregation standard.

There is no universal slowdown percentage for this situation. The title alone does not identify your Windows version, NIC models, switch capability, network layout, driver state or negotiated speeds, so treat the sections below as a diagnostic decision tree rather than a claim about one specific fault.

Port A Port B What the arrangement usually means
Same router or switch Same router or switch Two independent paths on one network. This is not load balancing unless a supported team is configured.
Main network Separate private network, NAS or direct peer Potentially valid, but the private interface normally should not add a second internet default gateway.
Two switch ports configured as a team Same configured team Potentially valid aggregation or failover. The switch and host settings must match the selected mode.
One or both ports connected to unknown equipment Unknown Disconnect one cable for diagnosis and identify the peer, subnet, gateway and link speed before attempting teaming.

Also note whether Wi-Fi or a VPN is active. The available documentation does not establish either as the cause in this scenario, but recording them prevents you from changing several variables at once.

How Windows chooses between the interfaces

Default gateways can send traffic the wrong way

When both adapters receive a default gateway, Windows has more than one candidate route for destinations outside the local subnet. If the gateways belong to disjoint networks, one of them may not know how to reach a destination that the other gateway can reach. A connection can then stall, reset or terminate when traffic follows the wrong path.

Microsoft generally cautions against assigning default gateways on private interfaces across separate networks. A secondary adapter that only reaches a local NAS, lab subnet or direct peer normally needs a route for that network, not another route for the entire internet. The exact destination, subnet and gateway must come from your topology; there is no safe universal address or command to paste.

Route and interface metrics influence preference

Windows evaluates route metrics and interface metrics when more than one route is available. Automatic Metric is enabled by default and takes link speed into account, but speed is only one input and does not understand your intended topology. A faster-looking interface can therefore become preferred even when it is attached to the wrong network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Learn states: “When network traffic routes are chosen and you have configured the InterfaceMetric parameter of the Set-NetIPInterface command, the overall metric that is used to determine the interface preference is the sum of the route metric and the interface metric.” The practical lesson is to inspect the actual route table and metrics before manually forcing priorities.

Common causes of the slowdown

Two unteamed adapters on the same network

Connecting two ordinary adapters to the same physical network is not a general load-balancing feature. Windows Server guidance documents additional overhead in this arrangement and explains that a standard setup does not provide a good way to make a redundant adapter for the same network. A supported failover team is a different design.

On a client PC, the symptoms can include intermittent delays, connections that start on one interface and return on another, or traffic that appears slower even though either cable works normally by itself. Remove the accidental duplicate path while testing; do not assume that two switch cables equal twice the bandwidth.

Expecting aggregation to double one connection

Teaming modes have different purposes, including fault tolerance, transmit balancing, receive balancing and aggregation. Static aggregation requires a capable switch and same-speed member adapters in Intel’s Windows 10 setup documentation. Dynamic 802.3ad requires a switch that supports that standard. Other modes may be host-only or limited to particular traffic directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even a correctly configured team distributes traffic according to its algorithm. A single TCP session to one internet server may remain on one member link, while several clients or destinations can be spread across members. A team can therefore improve aggregate throughput without changing the maximum speed of one flow.

One link negotiated below its expected speed

The second cable may expose a physical-layer problem rather than a routing problem. A damaged cable, incompatible switch port or mismatched auto-negotiation can leave one adapter at a lower rate. If Windows reports a port below its expected link speed, Intel recommends checking auto-negotiation at both ends, confirming that the switch or peer supports the intended speed, and testing a known-good cable. Intel specifically recommends Cat 6 or better for reliable Gigabit operation in its troubleshooting guidance.

A low negotiated rate explains slow transfers over that adapter; it does not explain a second default gateway or an incorrect route. Diagnose the physical link and the IP topology separately.

Safe Windows diagnostic procedure

  1. Record the connections. Label each cable and write down its peer, expected speed, subnet and purpose. Note whether the ports are on the same switch, separate routed networks, a NAS, or a direct connection.
  2. Establish a one-port baseline. Shut down or unplug one Ethernet cable, then test the same activity with the same server or website. Repeat with the other port. Record whether the problem is internet browsing, a local file copy, dropped sessions or delayed connection setup.
  3. Check negotiated speed. In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet for the active adapter and compare the reported link speed. You can also run ipconfig /all to identify adapters, addresses and gateways. A result below the expected rate points you toward the cable, peer or switch.
  4. Inspect addresses and gateways. Run Get-NetIPConfiguration in PowerShell or inspect each adapter’s IPv4 and IPv6 properties. Record every default gateway. If a private or direct-link adapter has an internet gateway, verify that it is genuinely required.
  5. Inspect routes and metrics. Use Get-NetRoute and Get-NetIPInterface in PowerShell, or route print in Command Prompt. Look for multiple 0.0.0.0/0 IPv4 routes, overlapping subnets and unexpected interface metrics. Do not change values until you know which network each route serves.
  6. Test one variable at a time. For diagnosis, remove the secondary gateway or disconnect the duplicate path only when that matches the intended design. If the secondary adapter is for a local network, configure a network-specific route appropriate to that subnet rather than adding another internet default route. The precise route depends on the destination and gateway supplied by your network administrator.
  7. Check the link partner and cable. Verify auto-negotiation on the PC and switch, confirm that both sides support the target speed, and substitute a known-good Cat 6-or-better cable. Recheck the reported rate after each change.
  8. Re-test the original workload. Repeat the same download, file copy or session test used for the baseline. Keep a note of which port carried the traffic so a routing improvement is not mistaken for a faster physical link.

Match the remedy to the evidence

Finding Likely interpretation Appropriate next action
Both adapters have default gateways on separate networks Windows can choose a gateway without a route to the destination. Keep the internet gateway on the intended primary path; use a specific route for the private network and verify the route table.
Both ports connect to the same switch, with no configured team Duplicate unteamed paths can add overhead and ambiguity. Use one link for the test, or implement a supported team/failover design after checking compatibility.
One adapter shows a lower negotiated rate Cable, switch port, peer capability or auto-negotiation issue. Test a known-good cable, verify both ends’ settings and confirm the peer supports the intended speed.
Team configured, but one internet flow is unchanged Traffic distribution may keep that flow on one member. Evaluate aggregate traffic across multiple clients or destinations; do not judge a team by one session alone.
Switch is unmanaged and teaming mode requires switch support The host and switch cannot perform the selected aggregation protocol. Use a host-supported mode only if documented for your hardware, or use a compatible managed switch.

When teaming or link aggregation is appropriate

Consider a team only after you can state the goal and verify every dependency.

  • Goal: Decide whether you need failover, more aggregate traffic for several clients, or a faster transfer to one peer.
  • NIC support: Confirm the exact adapter models, driver versions, supported teaming feature and whether the feature applies to your Windows edition and version.
  • Switch support: Determine whether the selected mode needs static configuration or 802.3ad/LACP support. An unmanaged switch is not automatically compatible.
  • Member consistency: Intel’s static-aggregation guidance calls for same-speed member adapters. Do not assume mixed speeds or unrelated drivers will behave as one link.
  • Traffic pattern: Aggregation is most useful when traffic can be distributed across destinations or clients. A single connection may still be limited to one member.
  • Topology: Team members normally attach to the same logical network and are presented as one teamed interface. Separate routed networks require ordinary routing design, not a team.
  • Operational cost: A team adds driver, switch and troubleshooting complexity. If one correctly configured faster link meets the requirement, it may be more reliable than a team.

Intel’s setup material is adapter-, driver- and operating-system-specific and includes legacy Advanced Network Services documentation. Verify current support for the exact hardware and Windows release instead of copying an old setup recipe or enabling a random adapter option.

What not to do

  • Do not assume two plugged-in cables will automatically bond.
  • Do not add a second default gateway merely because a second port is available.
  • Do not connect both ports to an unmanaged switch and expect guaranteed load balancing.
  • Do not force a speed or duplex value, disable IPv6, or install a particular driver utility as a universal cure; those actions are not established solutions for this symptom.
  • Do not buy a new NIC or switch until the route table, gateway design and negotiated link speeds show that hardware capacity is the limiting factor.

Bottom line

A slower PC with both Ethernet ports connected is usually a path-selection, duplicate-network, unsupported-teaming or link-negotiation problem—not proof that two ports should have doubled your internet speed. Start with the topology, compare one-port and two-port baselines, inspect gateways, routes and metrics, then verify each physical link. Only configure teaming after the NICs, Windows version, drivers, switch and traffic pattern are known to support the mode you actually need.
