A Nest thermostat can still call for heat while set to Off if the indoor temperature reaches its Heat Safety Temperature. Warm air while set to Cool is a different problem: on a heat pump, Google identifies an incorrect O/B orientation as one possible cause. Start by checking the thermostat’s mode and whether it is actually calling for heat; the right next step depends on that distinction.

First, tell the two symptoms apart

Check the mode shown on the thermostat. In Off mode, ordinary heating and cooling schedules are disabled, but Safety Temperatures remain active. In Cool mode, the thermostat is requesting cooling; warm air from a heat pump can indicate a configuration issue. If the system heats when the thermostat is not calling for heat, the cause is not established by the symptom alone and needs equipment-side diagnosis.

Off does not disconnect power to the thermostat or HVAC system. Google says Safety Temperatures can still trigger heating to help protect the home from extreme temperatures, including freezing. See Google’s Off mode guidance and Safety Temperature explanation.

Five causes or checks to work through

1. The indoor temperature reached the Heat Safety Temperature

This is the clearest reason a Nest may heat in Off mode. The heating Safety Temperature is on by default, according to Google, and can prompt heating if the home falls to the configured threshold. Check the Safety Temperature setting for your thermostat rather than assuming Off prevents every heating call. Turning Safety Temperatures off removes protection against dangerous temperature extremes and possible property damage.

  • Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
  • Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]

2. Eco or presence behavior changed the active setting

Eco can maintain a heating setpoint, and presence-based Away behavior can switch a thermostat to Eco; when someone returns or motion is detected, it can resume heating or cooling. Check the current mode and Eco settings in the app used by your thermostat. Eco Heat set to Off still leaves Safety Temperature protection in place. Regular schedules, however, do not override Off mode.

Settings and paths differ by generation: the Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) use Google Home app paths for some controls, while the Nest Thermostat E and earlier Learning Thermostats may use different paths, including the Nest app. Confirm the model before following instructions. See Google’s Eco and presence guidance.

3. A heat pump’s O/B orientation is wrong in Cool mode

If you have a heat pump and the Nest is set to Cool but the vents deliver warm air, check the heat-pump O/B orientation. Google lists an incorrect setting as a possible reason heating and cooling are reversed; its documented correction is to switch the selected O/B setting using instructions for the exact thermostat generation. This is not a general fix for every heating system, and it is not a reason to move wires based only on their color. Follow Google’s model-specific reversed heating and cooling instructions.

4. Auxiliary heat is operating on a heat pump

Some heat pumps use auxiliary (AUX) heat automatically in very cold weather or during defrost. Google states: “AUX heat can turn on when it’s too cold outside, or your heat pump needs to defrost.” Heat Pump Balance affects AUX use on compatible systems. This explains backup-heat behavior, but Google’s guidance does not identify AUX as a reason for heating in Cool mode or Off mode apart from Safety Temperature calls. Emergency Heat is separate and must be activated manually. Consult Heat Pump Balance guidance and Emergency Heat guidance.

5. Wiring or HVAC equipment needs professional diagnosis

If the system continues heating when the thermostat shows no call for heat, the available guidance does not identify a specific failed component. Wiring problems or an HVAC equipment issue are possibilities, not diagnoses you can confirm from the symptom alone. Google provides help-code and wire-detection troubleshooting, and directs users to professional help for some issues. Do not guess from wire color or attempt a generic wiring fix; use Google’s help-code guidance and wire-detection guidance, and contact a qualified HVAC professional when the equipment heats without a thermostat call or wiring is uncertain.

Choose the next check by mode and equipment

What you see What to check first Why it matters
Heating while mode is Off Heat Safety Temperature and whether indoor temperature reached it Off disables ordinary schedules but retains Safety Temperature operation.
Warm air while mode is Cool Whether the system is a heat pump; if so, verify O/B orientation for the exact Nest model The O/B setting is a heat-pump configuration, not a universal heating fix.
Unexpected heating associated with Eco or Away Current mode, Eco setpoint, and presence behavior in the relevant app Presence behavior can change the active setting; Eco Heat set to Off still retains Safety Temperature protection.
Heat continues with no thermostat call Stop treating this as a mode-setting issue; arrange qualified HVAC diagnosis The symptom alone does not identify a failed part.

When to stop troubleshooting settings

Seek qualified HVAC help if the system keeps producing heat while the Nest is not calling for heat, if a wiring or equipment help code requires service, or if you are uncertain about wiring. Google’s wiring guidance notes that wire detection and compatibility can vary; do not use wire color alone to decide what to connect.
