If your Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ is not brewing, start with the water tank, capsule, and locking lever. Fill the tank, insert an undamaged Vertuo capsule with its dome facing down, close the head, turn the lever left to lock it, place a cup under the outlet, and press the button once. A blinking button is not automatically an error: the machine blinks while heating for about 30 seconds, while it reads the capsule barcode and pre-wets the coffee, and while a normal brew is flowing.
Use the checks below in order. They move from low-risk setup corrections to cleaning, descaling, and the manufacturer’s recovery sequence. Do not open the appliance or attempt an internal electrical repair.
First, identify what the Pop+ is doing
The light, water flow, and capsule state narrow the problem quickly. Use this table before starting a maintenance cycle.

| What you see | Most likely meaning | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No light | The machine is off, has entered automatic shutoff, or has no power. | Press the button or unlock the head. Then check the outlet, plug, voltage, and fuse if it remains dark. |
| Button blinking for roughly 30 seconds after startup | Normal warm-up. | Wait until the light becomes steady. |
| Button blinking while coffee flows normally | Normal operation. | Let the brew finish; do not open the head. |
| Steady light but no brew starts | The lever may not be locked, or the capsule may be missing, used, damaged, or incorrectly positioned. | Open the head, eject the capsule, insert a fresh Vertuo capsule correctly, and lock the lever. |
| Only water is flowing | A cleaning, descaling, or emptying cycle may be running. | Allow the requested maintenance cycle to complete. |
| One blink followed by one pause | The machine is asking for a water-tank or locking check. | Fill and seat the tank, then verify that the lever is locked. |
| Two blinks followed by one pause | A brewing or maintenance condition needs correction. | Use the context-specific checks and recovery sequence below. |
| Three orange blinks followed by steady white | Descaling is required. | Run the model’s descaling procedure before continued use. |
Nespresso’s 2025 Vertuo Pop+ User Manual says, “If coffee is flowing normally, this indicates the machine is working properly.” A blinking light during an ordinary pour therefore does not, by itself, indicate a failed pump.

1. Wake the machine and rule out a power or heat delay
Check automatic shutoff
The Pop+ turns off automatically after two minutes without use. Press the button or unlock the head to wake it. After startup, the button blinks during warm-up and turns steady when the machine is ready; the manual specifies an approximately 30-second heat-up.
Check the electrical supply
If there is still no light, make sure the plug is fully inserted and the outlet works. Check that the machine is receiving the voltage expected for your region and inspect the relevant fuse or breaker. Do not continue operating a cord, plug, or outlet that is hot, damaged, or sparking.
Let an overheated machine rest
If you suspect overheating, the US assistance guidance says to turn the machine off, unplug it, open the head, and let it rest for 30 minutes. After the rest period, reconnect it and try the normal startup procedure. Persistent loss of power requires service rather than disassembly.

- Fill and seat the tank. Fill the water tank and make sure it is correctly positioned on the machine. A tank that is empty or not fully seated can prevent brewing.
- Open the head fully. Eject any used capsule. Never leave a spent capsule in place when you are trying to start a new brew or a maintenance cycle.
- Insert the correct capsule. Use a fresh, undamaged Nespresso Vertuo capsule. Place it in the chamber with the dome facing down. The Pop+ uses the Vertuo capsule format; unrelated capsule systems are not interchangeable.
- Lock the head. Close the head and turn the lever left to the locked position. A steady light with no start commonly means this step was missed.
- Place a cup and start once. Put a cup under the coffee outlet and press the button once. Do not repeatedly press the button while the machine is deciding what to do.
- Wait for the code-reading delay. The machine reads the barcode on the capsule and pre-wets the coffee before the main flow begins. Coffee may therefore take a moment to appear even when the machine is functioning normally.
- Keep the head closed. Leave the head locked until the button returns to steady white and the brew has finished.
The manual explains that the machine automatically recognizes the inserted capsule and selects the preparation parameters and cup length defined for that coffee. That automatic reading is why a short pause before liquid appears is expected.
3. Read the blinking pattern in context
One blink and one pause
When the machine will not start and shows one blink followed by one pause, fill the water tank and check that the lever is locked. Retry the normal brewing setup only after both conditions are satisfied.
Two blinks and one pause during brewing
Check that a fresh, undamaged capsule is in the correct position, the lever is locked, and the tank contains water. If the capsule is questionable, eject it and use a new Vertuo capsule rather than trying to force the head closed.
Two blinks and one pause during cleaning, descaling, or emptying
For a maintenance operation, confirm that the capsule has been ejected and that the lever is locked. A capsule left in the chamber can prevent the maintenance cycle from starting.

Persistent two-blink pattern
If the two-blink/one-pause condition continues, follow the recovery sequence specified by the manual:
- Unlock and open the head.
- Replace the capsule if it is used, damaged, or incorrectly positioned.
- Unplug the machine for 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it and close the head.
- Press the button to turn the machine on.
- Press the button again to brew.
If the pattern returns after this sequence, stop troubleshooting at home and contact Nespresso support.
Three orange blinks, then steady white
This is the Pop+ descaling alert. The manual says the machine can be used only a few more times after the alert, so treat it as a maintenance requirement rather than an optional reminder.
4. Run the cleaning rinse before assuming a hardware failure
Cleaning is appropriate when coffee does not come out, residue is visible inside the head, or the machine has been unused for a long period. Nespresso recommends cleaning monthly. The rinse uses no capsule and can remove residue that interferes with flow or capsule reading.
Prepare the machine
- Eject any used capsule.
- Empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray.
- Remove the cup support.
- Place an empty container with a capacity of at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet.
- Make sure no capsule is inserted.
Start the rinse
- Close the head and turn the lever to the locked position.
- Press the button three times within two seconds.
- Leave the machine alone while the rinse runs. It may take up to seven minutes and stops automatically.
Water-only flow during this operation is expected. Do not interrupt the rinse simply because no coffee is coming out; there is deliberately no capsule in the chamber.
Wash removable parts safely
Wash the capsule container, cup support, and drip tray with hot water and a mild, odorless detergent. Wipe the coffee outlet with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, put the machine in a dishwasher, or immerse any part of the machine in water.
5. Descale when the alert appears or abnormal flow persists
Mineral scale can contribute to no coffee, reduced flow, or unusual flow. The Pop+ manual specifies a procedure using one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid, 0.5 litre of water, and a container holding at least 1 litre. Descaling mode is available after 30 or more coffees have been brewed.

Before you start
- Remove and eject any capsule.
- Empty the capsule container and drip tray.
- Have the specified descaling liquid, 0.5 litre of water, and a container of at least 1 litre ready.
- Protect the work surface and keep the solution away from eyes and skin.
Run the complete manufacturer procedure
Follow every step in the Vertuo Pop+ User Manual for entering descaling mode, running the solution, and performing the fresh-water rinse. The process takes approximately 20 minutes and cannot be interrupted. Do not stop halfway, substitute a generic acidic household cleaner, or improvise a shortened cycle. The rinse is part of the procedure and must be completed before brewing again.
6. Match the symptom to the right remedy
| Symptom | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No light and no response | Automatic shutoff, outlet, plug, voltage, and fuse. | Allow a suspected overheated unit to rest unplugged for 30 minutes; seek service if it remains dead. |
| Light blinks during startup, then becomes steady | Whether the approximately 30-second warm-up has finished. | Insert and lock a fresh Vertuo capsule, then press once. |
| Steady light, no liquid | Tank level, capsule position, and lever lock. | Rebuild the brewing setup and wait for barcode reading and pre-wetting. |
| Water flows but coffee does not | Whether a cleaning, descaling, or emptying cycle was intentionally started. | Let maintenance finish; if this occurs during brewing, clean and then descale when indicated. |
| Residue or restricted flow | Visible coffee residue and cleaning history. | Run the seven-minute rinse and wash removable parts. |
| Three orange blinks | Descaling alert. | Use the specified descaling liquid and complete the roughly 20-minute procedure and rinse. |
| Repeated two-blink pattern after recovery | Capsule, lock, tank, and the 10-second unplug reset. | Contact Nespresso if the condition persists. |
7. Distinguish a brewing fault from a maintenance cycle
“No coffee” can describe several different states. If water is running while you deliberately started cleaning, descaling, or emptying, the Pop+ is doing what that cycle requires; coffee is not supposed to appear without a capsule. Let the cycle stop automatically and complete any fresh-water rinse before inserting a capsule.
If the machine is supposed to brew and produces no water at all, return to the tank, capsule, and lock checks. A steady light does not override those physical requirements. If water begins only after a long pause, remember that capsule-code reading and pre-wetting occur before the main pour. If the flow is weak or unusual after the brew, clean first and apply descaling only when the alert appears or the abnormal flow persists.
8. Capsule and compatibility checks
The Pop+ recognizes the barcode on a Vertuo capsule and uses that code to set preparation parameters and cup length. Use a fresh, undamaged capsule in the Vertuo format, with the dome facing down. A used capsule, a visibly damaged capsule, or a capsule sitting incorrectly can prevent the head from locking or trigger the two-blink condition.
Do not substitute capsules from unrelated Nespresso systems. The fact that another capsule fits a different Nespresso machine does not make it compatible with the Vertuo Pop+. If a capsule is stuck, do not force the lever or pry inside the head; stop and ask Nespresso for assistance if normal ejection does not work.
9. Avoid actions that can create a second problem
- Do not open the head while coffee is being prepared.
- Do not force the lever if a capsule is stuck; stop and seek manufacturer assistance for a persistent mechanical obstruction.
- Do not run a cleaning cycle with a capsule installed.
- Do not use abrasive cleaner, solvent, or a dishwasher for the machine parts named in the manual.
- Do not replace the specified descaling liquid with an improvised household acid.
- Do not open the casing or attempt internal electrical repairs. The official troubleshooting steps do not authorize that work.
10. When to contact Nespresso
Escalate when the tank, capsule, lock, warm-up, cleaning, applicable descaling, and prescribed two-blink recovery checks do not restore operation. Contact support as well for a persistent mechanical obstruction, damaged power components, repeated electrical shutdown, or a machine that remains unresponsive after the overheating rest period.
Support numbers, warranty terms, and repair pricing vary by region and purchase details. Use the Nespresso assistance channel for your country rather than relying on a number from another market. Have the machine model, purchase information, and the exact light pattern available when you contact them.

After each brewing session
- Eject the used capsule when the machine has finished.
- Empty the drip tray or capsule container before either overflows.
- Wipe away visible coffee residue with a damp, non-abrasive cloth.
Each month
Run the no-capsule cleaning rinse and wash the removable parts with hot water and mild, odorless detergent. This is the interval recommended by Nespresso for routine cleaning.
When the machine signals or flow remains abnormal
Use the model’s descaling procedure when the three-orange-blink alert appears, or when abnormal flow persists after the basic setup and cleaning checks. Complete the fresh-water rinse before returning to normal brewing.

- No light? Wake the machine, check the outlet and plug, and allow a suspected overheated unit to rest unplugged for 30 minutes.
- Light blinking? Wait about 30 seconds for warm-up unless coffee is already flowing normally.
- Steady light but no start? Refill and seat the tank, eject the old capsule, insert a fresh Vertuo capsule dome-down, and lock the lever.
- Two blinks? Apply the brewing or maintenance checks for the current state, then perform the 10-second unplug recovery if the pattern persists.
- Residue or unusual flow? Run the no-capsule rinse, which can take up to seven minutes.
- Three orange blinks? Use one Nespresso descaling-liquid unit, 0.5 litre of water, and a 1-litre container, and allow roughly 20 minutes for the complete cycle and rinse.
- Still not working? Stop and contact Nespresso rather than opening the appliance.
What the blinking light means in plain language
A blinking button is a status signal, not a diagnosis. During warm-up it means the machine is preparing to brew. During a normal pour it confirms operation. During a cleaning or descaling cycle it can accompany water-only flow. The pattern becomes significant only when combined with the machine’s state: no start, no capsule, an unlocked lever, an empty tank, or an orange maintenance alert.
Start with the reversible checks, then clean, descale only with the specified procedure, and stop when the manufacturer’s recovery path ends. That sequence fixes setup and maintenance problems without turning a normal barcode-reading delay into a false hardware diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ blinking instead of brewing?
Blinking can be normal during the approximately 30-second warm-up, capsule-code reading, pre-wetting, or a normal pour. If it will not start, check the water tank and locked lever. One blink and one pause points to those checks; two blinks and one pause require the brewing or maintenance checks for the current machine state.
Why does my Vertuo Pop+ dispense water but no coffee?
If you started cleaning, descaling, or emptying, water-only flow is expected and the cycle should finish. During an intended brew, confirm that a fresh Vertuo capsule is installed dome-down, the tank is filled, and the lever is locked. Clean the machine if residue or unusual flow remains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow long should the Pop+ take before coffee starts?
Warm-up takes about 30 seconds. After you press the button, the machine reads the capsule barcode and pre-wets the coffee, so the main flow may begin after a short delay.

What does three orange blinks followed by steady white mean?
It is the descaling alert. The manual says the machine can be used only a few more times after this warning. Use the specified Nespresso descaling liquid and complete the full procedure and fresh-water rinse.
How do I clean a Vertuo Pop+ that will not brew?
Eject the capsule, empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray, remove the cup support, place a container of at least 1 litre under the outlet, and ensure no capsule is inserted. Lock the head and press the button three times within two seconds. The rinse can take up to seven minutes and stops automatically.
Can I use another Nespresso capsule type in the Vertuo Pop+?
No. The Pop+ is designed for the Vertuo capsule format and reads its barcode. Use a fresh, undamaged Vertuo capsule; unrelated Nespresso capsule systems are not interchangeable.

What should I do after the two-blink recovery fails?
Unlock and open the head, replace a questionable capsule, unplug the machine for 10 seconds, reconnect and close the head, press once to turn it on, and press again to brew. If the two-blink pattern returns, contact Nespresso.
Can I use vinegar or another household acid to descale it?
The Vertuo Pop+ manual specifies one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid, 0.5 litre of water, and a container of at least 1 litre. Do not substitute a generic acidic cleaner or shorten the roughly 20-minute procedure.
The Bottom Line
Check the tank, Vertuo capsule, lock, power, and normal warm-up first. Then run the no-capsule cleaning rinse, descale only with Nespresso’s specified procedure, and use the 10-second recovery sequence for a persistent two-blink pattern. If those steps fail, contact Nespresso instead of opening the machine.
