If food from a microwave air fryer combo is soft, pale, or unevenly browned, first confirm that you selected the appliance’s actual air-fry mode. Then check the model-specific instructions for its basket or rack, food spacing, temperature, turning, and preheating. These appliances use different cooking modes and accessories, so a setup that works for one model may not work for another.
Why a microwave air fryer combo may not crisp food
The selected mode may not be air fry
Microwave, combination, convection, grill, and air-fry modes can produce different results. A microwave-only setting is not intended to brown food like an air-fry setting, and a combination program may balance microwave energy with another heat source rather than prioritize a crisp exterior.
“Air fry” is not implemented identically across models. Whirlpool describes its manual air-fry mode as forced air combined with grill heat. GE Appliances describes heating elements and a fan circulating heated air; it explains that moving air helps prevent a cooler-air layer from forming around food. Panasonic describes heat and maximized airflow for its NN-CD88. Check the mode descriptions in the manual for your exact model rather than assuming the label means the same cooking process everywhere.

Hot air needs room to circulate around the food. Overlapping pieces, a crowded basket, or cookware that obstructs airflow can leave surfaces soft or cook food unevenly. A basket or rack that is misplaced—or not intended for that model and mode—can also affect the result.

Settings or preparation may not match the food
Temperature, cooking time, food size, quantity, and turning all matter. Large or uneven pieces may brown inconsistently, while food that needs turning can stay pale on one side. Preheating requirements vary by model and mode, so neither “always preheat” nor “never preheat” is a safe universal rule.

Find the exact model instructions
Locate the full model number on the appliance label and use the matching owner’s manual or manufacturer support page. Whirlpool directs owners to the manual for model-specific microwave information. Regional versions may have different instructions and accessories.

Choose the intended cooking mode
Select Air Fry when your goal is a crisp exterior, and confirm any required temperature or food preset. If you choose a microwave, combination, convection, or grill program instead, follow that mode’s instructions and expectations.

Fit and position the specified basket or rack
Use the supplied accessory or one the manufacturer lists as compatible with your model. For its microwave air-fry instructions, Whirlpool says to center the basket on the turntable and ensure it does not touch the cavity wall. Do not assume a generic rack or basket will fit safely or work as intended. If an accessory is missing or damaged, check the model’s parts list or manual before ordering a replacement.

Arrange food for airflow
Leave room between pieces and avoid stacking or overlapping them unless the recipe for your model says otherwise. Whirlpool’s listed air-fry recipes for fries, nuggets, wings, and potatoes use one layer. Turn or flip food when the appliance prompts you; for other models and foods, follow the manual’s directions.

Use cookware suited to the mode
Check that cookware is approved for the selected cooking mode and does not block the heat or airflow. Panasonic’s guidance, for example, recommends low-rimmed oven-safe cookware for its convection instructions, and a grill rack or shallow heatproof dish for grill mode; it also warns against plastic in those modes. Those are Panasonic-specific directions, not a universal list of compatible cookware.

Check temperature, time, and food quantity
Use the settings and portions specified for your model’s recipe or preset. As examples from its own manual air-fry guidance, Whirlpool lists 400°F (204°C) for fresh vegetables, 425°F (218°C) for fresh meat, and 450°F (232°C) for some frozen foods. These are not general settings for every microwave air fryer combo; use your appliance’s instructions instead.

Follow the model’s preheating instructions
Check the specific mode, not just the appliance category. Panasonic’s troubleshooting guidance says its convection mode requires preheating, while its NN-CD88 air-fry description says that function operates without preheating. These instructions apply to different modes or pages and illustrate why the manual for your exact model should decide.

When to contact the manufacturer or arrange service
If food still heats or browns poorly after you have confirmed the mode, accessory placement, food spacing, cookware, and settings against the manual, consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance or contact an authorized service provider. Panasonic notes that a heater or thermostat fault may be involved in persistent problems and recommends service inspection. Poor crisping alone does not establish that a component has failed, and internal repairs should not be attempted based on the symptom alone.
