A microSD card’s printed maximum is a peak capability, not a guaranteed transfer rate. The speed you see depends on the card’s flash design, the host device, the card-reader interface, the type of files being moved, and how full or fragmented the card has become. A fast card connected through an older phone, camera, computer slot, or USB reader can perform no faster than the slowest part of that chain. Likewise, a rating intended for sequential video recording does not predict the time needed to open thousands of small application files.
The reliable way to find the cause is to identify the card and bus standards, test large sequential reads and writes separately, then isolate the host, reader, workload, and card state.
Advertised maximum speed is not a promise
Manufacturers commonly print a maximum read speed, and sometimes a maximum write speed, on the package. The SD Association distinguishes those peak claims from both the card’s bus-interface rate and the minimum performance represented by a speed-class symbol. As the association puts it, “As a characteristic of flash memory, actual transfer speed varies.” The result can change with the operation being performed, the host device, the card’s implementation, and other data already stored on the card.

A claim such as “up to 100 MB/s” describes a best-case ceiling under the maker’s stated test conditions. It is usually associated with a particular read operation and a compatible interface. It does not mean every camera, phone, computer, reader, file type, or write operation will reach 100 MB/s. Average write speed can be substantially different from peak read speed, and a card may slow during long writes as its cache fills or as it manages existing data.

What speed-class symbols describe
Class marks are intended to communicate a minimum level of sequential access performance under defined conditions. They are particularly useful when a camera or recorder must sustain a video data stream. The Class 10 (C10) and UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) marks each indicate a 10 MB/s minimum in their applicable class context, but the marks are not interchangeable instructions for every host. The SD Association warns that mismatched card and host class combinations may not deliver the expected write speed.
Therefore, do not compare a printed maximum directly with a class minimum. “Up to 100 MB/s” and “10 MB/s minimum sustained sequential write” answer different questions.
The slowest interface in the chain sets the ceiling
A transfer passes through several links: the microSD card’s bus mode, the phone, camera, console or computer slot, and any adapter or USB reader. Every link must support the same high-speed mode. If one link falls back to an older mode, the card cannot use its fastest interface.

| Bus mode | Listed interface rate | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Default Speed | 12.5 MB/s | Bus capability, not a guaranteed card result |
| High Speed | 25 MB/s | Bus capability, not a guaranteed card result |
| UHS-I (SDR104) | Up to 104 MB/s | Maximum interface rate for the listed mode |
| UHS-II | Up to 312 MB/s, half-duplex | Applies only with compatible UHS-II hardware |
| UHS-III | Up to 624 MB/s | Applies only with compatible UHS-III hardware |
| SD Express | Up to 3940 MB/s for the listed configuration | Requires the corresponding SD Express card and host |
These are bus-interface figures, not universal microSD benchmarks. A UHS-I card in a UHS-I-capable phone may still read below the interface maximum, and a UHS-II-rated card in a UHS-I-only reader will operate at the slower mode. Confirm the generation supported by the card, host and reader rather than assuming that a newer label applies end to end.
Why a reader can be the bottleneck
A USB reader is useful when a computer has no suitable SD slot or only an older SD standard. It is not automatically a performance upgrade. Check both the reader’s SD bus support and the computer port it uses. A reader connected through a slower USB port, hub or adapter can cap the result before the card becomes the limiting component. For a fair diagnosis, record the card interface, host interface, reader interface and whether you measured a read or a write.
Your workload changes the result
Sequential and random operations stress flash storage in different ways. A large video file can be written in a mostly continuous stream. An application may read and update thousands of small files scattered across the card. A rating suitable for one task does not predict the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVideo and other sustained sequential writes
Video recording needs a steady minimum write rate. Speed-class symbols focus on minimum sequential access for this reason. A card that reaches a high speed for a short burst can still drop below the camera’s required sustained rate after its temporary cache is exhausted. Choose a card whose class marking meets the camera or recorder’s stated requirement, and ensure the device itself supports that class and bus mode.

Apps and small files
Application Performance Class (A1 or A2) adds random-performance requirements to the sequential requirement. The SD Physical Layer Simplified Specification Version 6.00 lists these minima under its specified test conditions:
| Application class | Minimum random read | Minimum random write | Minimum sustained sequential write | Additional requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 1,500 IOPS | 500 IOPS | 10 MB/s | Measured under the specification’s test conditions |
| A2 | 4,000 IOPS | 2,000 IOPS | 10 MB/s | Uses command queuing and cache features under the specification’s conditions |
IOPS means input/output operations per second, not megabytes per second. These are specification minima, not a prediction of an app’s launch time. An A2 card’s A2 functions are available only when the host also supports A2; placing an A2 card in a host without that support does not create A2-level behavior.
Fragmentation and card state can reduce sustained writes
Repeatedly deleting, replacing and appending files can leave free space in separated regions. The SD Association says writing to fragmented areas is generally slower than writing sequentially to an unfragmented free area. Speed-class conditions use a completely unfragmented free area, so everyday performance can diverge from the class test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Capacity and occupancy matter as well. A nearly full card has fewer convenient free regions for a long write, while the controller may spend more time reorganizing data. The exact effect varies by card design and workload, so a slower result after months of file operations does not by itself prove that the card has failed.

Diagnose a slow microSD card step by step
- Identify the complete setup. Write down the card’s capacity, interface and marks (for example, U1, U3, A1 or A2), the device model, the computer or phone port, and any adapter or reader. Consult the device manual or manufacturer specifications for supported card capacities, bus modes and recording classes.
- Check for an interface mismatch. Make sure the host and reader support the card’s relevant bus generation. If the computer slot is older, use a reader that explicitly supports the card’s interface and connect it to a suitable USB port. Do not infer reader performance from the card’s package maximum.
- Separate read and write tests. Copy one large file to the card and time the write; then copy a large file from the card and time the read. A large file produces a sequential workload. Do not compare a folder of tiny files with a video speed-class minimum, because they exercise different operations.
- Use repeatable conditions. Keep the same port, reader, file size and destination for each comparison. Let a long write run long enough to reveal a sustained rate rather than judging only the first burst. Stop other transfers that could share the bus.
- Check application-class support when relevant. For apps, verify A1 or A2 support on both the card and host. An A2 label alone cannot make a non-A2 host use A2 command queuing or cache features.
- Consider layout and free space. If performance changed after many delete-and-rewrite cycles, back up the card and note how full it is. Fragmentation is a plausible explanation for slower writes, especially when a large sequential test falls below an earlier result.
- Isolate one component at a time. Repeat the same large-file test in a known-compatible host or reader, then test a known-good card in the original setup. If the result follows the reader, host or port, that component is the likely limit. If it follows the card across compatible setups, the card or its data state deserves closer attention.
- Back up before reformatting. Reformatting can change the data layout and is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed speed fix. Copy irreplaceable files elsewhere first, use the file system required by the device, and understand that formatting erases the card.
How to interpret common symptoms
Fast initial copy, then a sharp drop
This pattern is consistent with a temporary write cache filling, a sustained-write limit, or the controller reorganizing existing data. Compare the long-run rate with the speed class and the host’s requirements rather than quoting the initial burst as the card’s normal speed.
Reads are fast but writes are slow
Read and write hardware paths are different. A package maximum may describe reading, while recording depends on sustained writing. Test each direction separately and check the card’s minimum sequential-write class.
The same card is slow only in one device
The device, its firmware, its slot or its interface mode is the leading suspect. Verify that device’s supported bus and class, then repeat the test with a compatible reader or host.

Many small files take far longer than one large file
That is expected from a random-workload penalty. File-system metadata and scattered accesses can dominate the transfer. For app storage, consider application-class support rather than relying on a high sequential maximum.

Performance changed after heavy use
Fragmentation, reduced free space and the card controller’s background management can all affect results. Back up, test under consistent conditions, and reformat only after preserving the data.
Choosing a replacement card or reader
Replace a card only after testing the existing one in a compatible chain. A higher printed maximum cannot overcome a host or reader limit, and no label guarantees a particular everyday result. Match the purchase to the actual workload:
| Use case | What to prioritize | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Camera or dashcam video | Required sustained sequential-write class | Device’s supported class, capacity and bus mode |
| Apps and games | A1 or A2 random-performance class | Host support for the same application class; A2 needs A2 support at both ends |
| Large file transfers to a computer | Compatible card, reader and computer interfaces | Reader bus generation and computer port capability |
| General storage | Capacity, reliability and host compatibility | File-system, capacity and interface limits in the device manual |
When comparing two cards, evaluate interface compatibility, sustained sequential-write minimum, random IOPS and host support, the conditions behind peak read/write claims, and capacity. Do not rank them by the largest number printed on the package alone.

- Use the same host, reader, port and file system for both cards.
- Measure a large sequential read and a large sequential write separately.
- Record the sustained rate, not only the first seconds of a copy.
- Keep the card’s free-space level and data layout in mind.

- For app storage, include random-performance results and whether the host supports A1 or A2.
No single number represents “microSD speed.” A result is meaningful only when its workload, direction, interface and test conditions are stated.
