A loading indicator often flickers because the work finishes just after the interface shows its pending state: the indicator appears, then the completed content replaces it almost immediately. In React, a separate cause is a visible Suspense boundary showing its fallback again when content suspends during an update. The right fix depends on which behavior your app has.
First find out what is turning the loading state on and off
Trace the loading state through one interaction. Identify what sets it to pending, what marks it complete, and which component or loading boundary controls what the user sees. If the state toggles several times during a quick sequence of updates, the indicator may be responding to each toggle rather than to one continuous wait.
- It appears once, then vanishes almost at once: the operation may be completing too quickly for the indicator to be useful.
- It reappears while existing content is visible: check whether an update is suspending content inside a React Suspense boundary.
- A large part of the screen is replaced: inspect the scope of the component or boundary that owns the loading treatment.
These are clues, not a diagnosis. Without knowing the framework and the app’s state logic, the title alone cannot establish the trigger.
For a fast operation, delay showing the indicator
If ordinary pending-state logic is working correctly but many operations finish almost immediately, wait briefly before displaying a spinner or skeleton. If the work completes before that threshold, the interface can skip showing the indicator altogether. This avoids a flash without making the operation itself faster.

Vercel’s Web Interface Guidelines suggest a show delay of about 150–300 ms and a minimum visible time of about 300–500 ms. Treat these as design guidance, not universal thresholds, measured results, or framework defaults. Tune them to the interaction and test how they feel in your interface.
A minimum visible time is a separate choice from a show delay: the delay suppresses feedback for very short work; the minimum duration prevents an indicator that has appeared from disappearing immediately. Neither should keep users waiting unnecessarily. Preserve clear feedback for meaningful waits, and make sure errors and completion states are still communicated.

For a React fallback that returns during an update, inspect Suspense
React Suspense displays a fallback while supported child content is not ready, then shows the content when it is ready. A boundary can also display its fallback again if content it had already shown suspends during an update. As the React Suspense reference puts it, “Replacing visible UI with a fallback creates a jarring user experience.”

Consider which visible region should change together while content loads. A boundary that wraps too much can replace an entire region when only one part is waiting; boundaries that are too fine-grained can reveal pieces in an order the interface should not present. React advises against putting a Suspense boundary around every component. Place boundaries around meaningful reveal sequences instead.

Consider whether the update is non-urgent
For some non-urgent updates, React’s startTransition or useDeferredValue can help avoid replacing already revealed content with a fallback. They address how an update and suspended content are handled; they do not add a general delay or minimum display time to a spinner. Choose based on the interaction and verify that the UI still communicates progress when a wait is meaningful.
React also documents coordination of suspended-content reveals within a 300 ms window. That is distinct from Vercel’s separate design guidance for when to show an indicator and how long to keep it visible; it is not a React setting that implements those timing recommendations.

Keep useful feedback for waits that are not brief
Suppressing a flash should not mean leaving people with a blank screen during a longer wait. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for loading recommend showing an indicator when content needs a second or two to load rather than leaving the screen blank. This is guidance, not a universal cutoff. The loading treatment should fit the amount of the interface that is actually waiting and provide feedback appropriate to the action.
Choose the fix that matches the trigger

Change one behavior at a time, then follow the same interaction from pending through completion or error. That makes it easier to tell whether the fix addressed a fast completion, a repeated state toggle, or a fallback that reappears during an update.
