A Linux driver that stops working does not automatically mean the upstream Linux kernel is at fault. Your system may use an older or vendor-modified kernel, a separately installed module, unsupported hardware, or a combination of changes that happened around the same time. Identify what is actually running, isolate plausible causes, and reproduce the failure before deciding whether to contact your device or distribution vendor or report an upstream kernel bug.
Why isn’t my Linux driver working?
“Linux” on a computer’s label does not tell you which kernel or driver code is handling a device. A distribution or hardware vendor may ship a kernel that is older than, or substantially different from, the current upstream kernel. Proprietary graphics software and virtualization products such as VirtualBox may also install external kernel modules. Hardware trouble, package changes, overclocking or undervolting, and filesystem damage can produce symptoms that resemble a kernel defect.
That distinction matters because the right support channel depends on who supplied or maintains the code involved. The Linux kernel’s issue-reporting guide advises that users with a vendor-provided or vendor-modified kernel should, in almost all cases, report the issue to that vendor first—unless they are prepared to install the latest Linux version themselves.
What happens when a driver tries to use a device?
When a device is found, the kernel’s driver model gives a matching driver an opportunity to probe it. The driver can check that the hardware exists and is a supported version, then initialize the device and allocate the resources it needs. If it cannot proceed, it may return an error; if a dependency is not ready yet, it can defer probing so the kernel can try again later. The kernel’s device-driver documentation describes this process.

So a driver that fails to bind does not, by itself, reveal the cause. It could be a driver bug, a device the driver does not support, or a resource or dependency that is unavailable. “The driver failed” is a useful symptom to investigate, not a diagnosis.
How to narrow down the cause
-
Identify the kernel, device, and module
Record your Linux distribution, the running kernel version, the device model or hardware ID, and the driver or module in use. Establish whether that kernel is supplied or modified by your distribution or hardware vendor, or is a vanilla upstream build. The kernel’s reporting guide explains why this distinction is important before filing an issue.

Check for separately installed modules
Look for third-party kernel modules or vendor software that installs them. The upstream reporting guide specifically calls out proprietary graphics drivers and VirtualBox as examples of software that may add external modules. If practical, temporarily remove or disable the relevant software, reboot, and see whether the problem remains. Change one thing at a time so the result is interpretable.

Consider non-kernel changes
Ask what else changed near the time the driver stopped working. A package update, faulty hardware, overclocking or undervolting, or filesystem damage may be relevant. A kernel update that happened at the same time as another change does not prove that the kernel caused the failure.

Test whether the problem tracks a kernel version
If you suspect a regression, write down the first kernel version where the issue occurs and the last one where it worked. When feasible, test a current release from the same supported stable or long-term kernel series. A failure that reliably appears between versions is stronger evidence than timing alone, but it still needs to be reported to the team responsible for the affected kernel or vendor code.
-
Search for an existing report
Before submitting a new upstream report, search for an existing report about the same device and symptoms. The kernel’s issue-reporting documentation explains how to prepare a report and identify the relevant subsystem and reporting channel.
Rank #4
Where should you report the problem?
| What you found | Best next contact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A vendor-provided or vendor-modified kernel | The distribution or hardware vendor that supplied it | The vendor owns the kernel build and its modifications; the upstream kernel project may not be able to diagnose those changes. |
| A suspected issue in an upstream kernel | The relevant kernel subsystem’s maintainers and reporting channel | The kernel has no single central bug tracker for every issue. Follow the subsystem’s reporting instructions and check for an existing report. |
| A third-party module or vendor software appears involved | The module or software vendor, or its support channel | External code can affect behavior and complicate reports about upstream kernel code. |
The upstream documentation makes the boundary explicit: “A warranty or support contract with some vendor doesn’t entitle you to request fixes from the upstream Linux developers.” A vendor support agreement is not an upstream kernel support contract.
For an upstream report, provide a concise description others can reproduce, the device and hardware ID, the kernel versions that fail and work, and the checks you performed. Use the reporting channel for the affected subsystem rather than assuming every kernel problem belongs in one general tracker.

When driver developers need deeper debugging
For developers or advanced investigation, the kernel’s driver development debugging guide discusses logging with printk() and tools such as dynamic debug and ftrace. Some techniques require rebuilding a module or kernel, so they are not routine prerequisites for an ordinary user trying to identify the right support channel.
