Why won’t my leaf blower start? “Won’t start” describes several different faults, not one universal problem. Begin with the stop switch, the exact cold- or warm-start procedure, and fresh fuel that matches your model. Then work through fuel delivery, flooding and airflow, and ignition. If the engine will not crank or the checks point to carburetor, electrical, or internal-engine damage, stop and use a qualified small-engine technician or the manufacturer’s authorized dealer.
Start with the blower’s exact make and model
Read the identification label on the housing before removing parts. Write down the manufacturer, model number, and, if shown, the serial-series information. Starting positions, fuel mixtures, air filters, spark plugs, and adjustment procedures vary between blowers that look almost identical.
Open the current operator manual for that exact model. Use its cold-start and warm-start instructions rather than a generic sequence from another blower. A procedure intended for a two-stroke engine may be wrong for a four-stroke model, and a spark-plug specification from one model cannot be transferred to another.
- Keep the manual beside the machine while diagnosing it.
- Photograph hose routing and control positions before disconnecting anything.
- Use only parts whose part number or compatibility is confirmed for the model.
- Work outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area, away from flames, heaters, cigarettes, and sparks.
What to check first when the engine cranks but will not catch
1. Confirm the basic controls
- Move the stop switch to ON or RUN. A switch left in STOP can make a healthy engine appear completely dead.
- Set the throttle, if your blower has one, to the position specified for starting.
- Decide whether the engine is cold or warm. A cold engine generally needs the model’s choke and priming sequence; a recently run engine often needs less or no choke.
- Check that the tube and any safety interlock are installed as the manual requires. Do not bypass an interlock.
2. Follow the model-specific priming and choke sequence
Cold- and warm-start procedures are not interchangeable. For example, one ECHO cold-start procedure instructs the operator to pump the purge bulb until fuel is visible and flows through the return line, pull the starter until the engine fires (or up to five times in that procedure), move the choke to RUN, and pull again if necessary. That is an example for the covered ECHO procedure, not a universal instruction for every blower.

Moving the choke to RUN after the first fire is important. Repeatedly pulling with full choke can add more fuel than the engine can burn and create a flooded condition. If your manual gives different numbers of bulb pumps or starter pulls, follow those numbers instead.
Fuel: type, freshness, and delivery
Use the specified fuel and oil ratio
Most handheld blowers use a gasoline-and-two-stroke-oil mixture, while some models use straight gasoline and separate engine oil. The required octane, ethanol limit, and oil ratio are model-specific. Do not guess the ratio, substitute automotive oil, or add oil to a four-stroke tank unless the manual says to do so.
STIHL’s blower FAQ says its gasoline engines may use gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol (E10), recommends storing the unit dry when it will be unused for more than 30 days, and says not to store or use fuel mix older than 60 days in the context of that blower guidance. Those are STIHL recommendations; they are not a universal storage rule for every manufacturer. Follow your own manual if it sets a different limit.
Why old fuel can prevent starting
Gasoline loses volatility during storage. In a two-stroke mixture, oil can also separate or degrade. The result may be hard starting, a no-start, or an engine that fires briefly and dies. If fuel has been sitting in the tank for longer than the period allowed by your manual, drain it into an approved fuel container and dispose of it according to local rules. Never pour gasoline onto soil or into a drain.
Refill with a small amount of correctly mixed, fresh fuel and try the manufacturer’s starting procedure once more. If the engine starts only with fresh fuel, clean the tank and inspect the fuel system before returning to normal use; stale fuel may have left deposits in the filter, line, or carburetor.

Check whether fuel can reach the carburetor
A blower can have fuel in its tank yet receive none at the carburetor. Common causes include a restricted in-tank strainer, a blocked fuel line, a cracked line that draws air, or a damaged connection. ECHO troubleshooting guidance lists a clogged fuel strainer or line as a cause of no fuel reaching the carburetor and directs cleaning, replacement, or dealer service depending on the fault.
- With the engine cool, inspect visible fuel lines for cracks, hardening, kinks, wet spots, or loose connections.
- Look for a damaged tank grommet or line that has pulled away from its fitting.
- Check the fuel-filter or strainer condition only as the manual permits. Some filters are serviceable; others are replacement parts.
- Do not poke a filter with wire or enlarge a passage. That can release debris into the carburetor or alter fuel flow.
If a line leaks, smells strongly of gasoline, or cannot be routed exactly as shown in the manual, do not run the blower. Replace the correctly specified line or have a dealer do it.

Recognize a flooded engine
Flooding means the engine has received more fuel than it can ignite. Typical clues are a strong gasoline smell, a wet spark plug, a muffler that is wet with fuel, or an engine that briefly tries to start and then will not fire. A flooded engine may also stop responding after many full-choke pulls.
For the ECHO model covered by its troubleshooting chart, a wet muffler can indicate an overly rich mixture. The listed remedies include opening the choke and cleaning or replacing the air filter, with carburetor adjustment assigned to a dealer. Your model may specify a different clearing procedure.
Clear flooding only as the manual directs
- Move the stop switch to the safe position while preparing the machine.
- Follow the manual’s flooded-engine procedure. It may call for opening the choke and holding the throttle in a particular position, but do not invent a position if the manual does not specify one.
- Allow vapors to disperse outdoors before trying again.
- Stop if raw fuel continues to leak, pools in the muffler, or reaches hot surfaces.
A flooded plug can sometimes be cleaned or dried when the manual permits it, but replacement is appropriate when the plug is fuel-fouled, damaged, or outside the specified condition. Do not keep pulling indefinitely; repeated attempts can worsen flooding and exhaust the starter or battery.

Inspect the air filter and intake
A dirty or oil-soaked air filter restricts the air needed for combustion and can contribute to rich running, stalling, or a no-start. ECHO maintenance guidance calls for checking filter condition, while its troubleshooting material lists a dirty filter as a cause of poor operation.
- Remove the filter only after the area around it is clean, so grit does not enter the intake.
- Clean or replace it only using the method and part specified in the manual. Some foam filters can be washed and lightly oiled; some paper or composite filters must be replaced.
- Never run the blower without its filter unless the manual explicitly permits a brief service check; unfiltered dust can damage the engine.
Also check that the intake screen, cover, and cooling passages are not packed with leaves or dust. Refit every cover and seal before starting.
Ignition and spark-plug checks
Verify the stop circuit before removing the plug
An OFF stop switch, damaged switch wiring, a failed ignition component, or a loose plug lead can prevent ignition. Inspect the lead and boot for cuts, melting, or a loose fit, but do not probe live ignition parts while the engine is turning.
Use the correct spark plug and gap
Spark-plug type, heat range, thread, and gap are model-specific. The ECHO manual cited for its covered model specifies a 0.65 mm (0.026 in.) gap. That measurement must not be applied to another blower unless its manual gives the same value.
Remove the plug only with the engine cool and the plug area cleaned first. Examine the electrode and insulator:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Wet with fuel: the engine may be flooded; follow the model’s clearing procedure.
- Heavy black carbon: combustion may be rich, the filter may be restricted, or the plug may be overdue for replacement.
- Cracked ceramic, damaged threads, or eroded electrode: replace with the specified plug.
- Incorrect gap: adjust only with a proper gauge and only to the value in the manual.
After reinstalling, tighten the plug to the manual’s torque or seating instruction. Over-tightening can damage the cylinder head; under-tightening can cause compression loss and overheating.
Do not perform an unsafe spark test
Never hold a removed plug against the engine or ground it beside the cylinder opening to look for a spark. The ECHO operator manual states: “Fuel vapors are extremely flammable and may cause fire and/or explosion. Never test for ignition spark by grounding spark plug near cylinder plug hole, otherwise serious personal injury may result.” Fuel vapors can ignite even when no liquid fuel is visible.
If the manual provides a safe ignition-test method, use the specified tester and procedure. Otherwise, leave ignition diagnosis to a qualified technician.
When the starter will not turn the engine
A different branch applies when the engine does not crank or the starter rope cannot be pulled normally.

- Inspect the starter rope, recoil housing, and handle for damage. A frayed rope or jammed recoil should be repaired before further use.
- If the rope pulls out only a short distance and locks, do not force it. Internal seizure, liquid in the cylinder, or a damaged starter mechanism may be present.
- For battery-start models, confirm the battery is charged and correctly seated, then follow the charger and interlock instructions for that model.
An engine that will not crank normally can involve internal mechanical damage or a seized component. It is not a fuel or spark-plug adjustment problem; arrange dealer or qualified small-engine service.

A practical diagnostic sequence
Use this order so that simple, low-risk causes are checked before disassembly:
- Identify the model: read the label and open the current operator manual.
- Confirm controls: stop switch ON/RUN, correct throttle position, and the proper cold- or warm-start setting.
- Prime and choke exactly as specified: use the manual’s bulb-pump and pull sequence, moving the choke to RUN at the prescribed point.
- Verify fuel: correct gasoline or mixture, within the model’s freshness limit, with no water or visible contamination.
- Inspect delivery: look for cracked lines, blocked strainers, damaged connections, and a restricted fuel filter.
- Consider flooding: if there is a strong fuel smell, wet muffler, or wet plug, use the model’s flooded-engine procedure rather than more full-choke pulls.
- Check airflow: clean or replace the air filter and clear the intake and cooling screens as directed.
- Inspect the plug: verify condition, type, and model-specific gap; replace only with the specified part.
- Escalate: if the engine still will not start, or if a fault involves carburetor adjustment, electrical testing, compression, or internal parts, stop and arrange professional service.
Which replacement part should you buy?
Do not buy a generic part solely because it is described as a “leaf blower” component. Match all of the following:
| Part or category | What must match | What the manual may allow |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | Manufacturer part number, thread, reach, heat range, and gap | Cleaning, gap adjustment, or replacement; the ECHO example is 0.65 mm (0.026 in.) for its covered model only |
| Air filter | Exact model and filter design | Cleaning for serviceable foam types or replacement for filters that cannot be washed |
| Fuel filter or in-tank strainer | Correct size, attachment, and flow direction where applicable | Cleaning only when specified; otherwise replacement |
| Fuel line | Correct inside diameter, material, length, routing, and tank grommet fit | Replacement after confirmed cracking, leakage, hardening, or blockage |
Replace a part after a diagnosis points to it, not simply because the engine failed to start. A new spark plug will not fix a blocked fuel line, and a new filter will not correct an electrical or compression fault.

Use an authorized dealer or qualified small-engine technician when:
- The engine will not crank, the starter locks, or the rope mechanism is damaged.
- Fuel leaks from the tank, carburetor, line, or muffler.
- The manual identifies carburetor adjustment, electrical diagnosis, or internal-engine repair as a service task.
- The blower has no ignition after safe, manual-approved checks.
- Compression, piston, crankshaft, or cylinder damage is suspected.
- You cannot identify the correct fuel mixture or replacement part for the model.
Do not turn carburetor screws at random. Incorrect adjustment can create an excessively lean mixture, overheating, poor emissions, or engine damage. Manufacturers commonly reserve these adjustments for trained service personnel.
Preventing the next no-start
- Mix and store fuel exactly as the manual specifies, and label the date and ratio on the container.
- Do not keep fuel beyond the manufacturer’s stated period. STIHL’s 30-day dry-storage and 60-day fuel-mix guidance applies to its blower recommendations, not automatically to other brands.
- Before storage, perform the manual’s fuel-draining or stabilization procedure.
- Inspect fuel lines, filters, air filters, spark plugs, and cooling passages at the maintenance intervals listed for the model.
- Keep leaves and dust away from the intake and recoil housing.
- Store the blower upright in a dry, ventilated place away from ignition sources.
What a “no-start” symptom can and cannot tell you
A single symptom does not identify the failed part. A blower that cranks but does not catch may have no fuel delivery, too much fuel, restricted air, no spark, or an internal-engine fault. A blower that starts and dies may point toward fuel flow, a blocked filter, or an air leak, but it still requires the model’s troubleshooting chart. Manufacturer troubleshooting tables are diagnostic branches, not measurements of how often each cause occurs; no reliable percentage ranking of leaf-blower no-start causes is established by the cited manufacturer material.
