If your keyboard suddenly types French characters, the active keyboard layout or input source may have changed to French; your menus and apps can still remain in English. Check the active input first, then remove an unwanted French layout or review the shortcut or key that switches sources. The steps differ between Windows and macOS.
Why does my keyboard switch to French?
Computers can have multiple keyboard layouts or input sources installed. The active one determines which characters a key produces, so selecting French can change what you type without changing the language used for menus and apps. Microsoft explicitly notes that changing a Windows keyboard layout does not change the Windows display language. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows language and keyboard settings guide.
A layout may change because another installed option was selected or a keyboard shortcut or dedicated key was pressed. The exact cause cannot be identified from the symptoms alone; first check the active input indicator, then review the layouts and switching controls for your operating system.

Look for the operating system’s input indicator before changing settings. In Windows, check the input-language icon in the taskbar. On a Mac, use the Input menu in the menu bar if it is enabled. Select the intended English layout or input source there. Apple’s Input Sources guide explains when the menu appears and how to manage sources.

If the indicator shows English but the characters still do not match the keys, the problem may not be a French layout switch. The available sources establish how to inspect and manage input settings, but they do not determine what is causing every keyboard mismatch.
Fix unwanted French switching in Windows
- Check the taskbar indicator. Select the input-language icon and choose the intended keyboard layout. Microsoft describes this indicator as a way to select layouts. See Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard settings instructions.
- Review installed layouts. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Inspect the installed languages and their associated keyboard layouts. Remove an unwanted French layout only if you do not need it.
- Check switching shortcuts. Microsoft documents Alt+Shift for switching keyboard layouts through the language bar in the configuration covered by its instructions. If the layout changes unexpectedly, check whether that shortcut is being pressed accidentally and review the switching settings available in your Windows version. Do not assume the shortcut behaves identically in every setup. Microsoft’s language-bar guide describes this shortcut.
- Verify the layout before signing in. If the password field produces unexpected characters, check the input-language icon on the sign-in screen before entering your password. Microsoft notes that changing the Windows display language may also change the keyboard layout.
Microsoft’s support page includes instructions for Windows 11 and Windows 10 and notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Consult the current Windows instructions for your version.

Fix unwanted French switching in macOS
- Review Input Sources. Open Keyboard settings and inspect the listed sources. Select the one you want, or remove French if you do not need it. Apple’s instructions cover adding, selecting, and removing input sources.
- Use the menu-bar Input menu. Enable or use the Input menu to see and select the active source. Apple says this menu appears automatically when more than one input source is added.
- Check the Globe/Fn key assignment. In Keyboard settings, review whether the Globe or Fn key is assigned to change input source. If it is, an accidental press could switch the active source.
- Treat Caps Lock as a specific case. Apple documents Caps Lock switching for certain combinations of non-Latin and Latin input sources. It is not a universal fix for switching between French and English.
Where the controls are on each platform
| What to check | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Active input | Taskbar input-language indicator | Input menu in the menu bar, when available |
| Installed layouts or sources | Settings > Time & language > Language & region | Keyboard settings > Input Sources |
| Switching control | Alt+Shift is documented for language-bar switching in Microsoft’s described configuration | Globe/Fn can be assigned to Change Input Source; Caps Lock switching applies only to specified source combinations |
The paths and controls above come from Microsoft’s Windows settings guide, Microsoft’s language-bar guide, and Apple’s Mac Input Sources guide. Labels can vary with operating-system version and configuration.
What will not fix a software layout switch
A replacement keyboard, key stickers, or new keycaps do not remove an operating system’s French input source or change which source is active. The documented remedy is to select the intended input and adjust the installed layouts or switching controls.
