If Wi-Fi is slow only on your iPhone, compare it with another device on the same network, then test the iPhone on a different Wi-Fi network. If the slowdown follows the iPhone, check its software, VPN or security filters, and settings for that network. If it stays with one network, investigate the router, signal, and internet service.

First, find out whether the iPhone or the network is the problem

A slow web page, buffering video, sluggish download, or difficulty joining Wi-Fi can have different causes. The Wi-Fi connection, router, DNS or proxy settings, VPN filtering, and internet service can all affect what you experience. A Wi-Fi signal indicator does not tell you whether the internet connection itself is fast.

Run these two checks before changing settings:

  1. Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If it is slow too, the iPhone is less likely to be the only cause.
  2. Try the iPhone on another Wi-Fi network. If it works normally there, focus on the original network or router.

Apple recommends checking other devices and trying another location to distinguish a network issue from an iPhone-specific one. Apple’s iPhone Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

If the problem follows your iPhone

Restart and update iOS

Restart the iPhone and install any available iOS update. These basic steps can address software or connectivity problems. Apple includes restarting and updating software in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Test VPN and security filtering

A VPN or third-party security app that monitors or filters connections can interfere with some network traffic. If you can do so safely, temporarily remove the software, restart the iPhone, and test again, following Apple’s troubleshooting steps. If the connection improves, ask the software provider or your network administrator how to configure it. Do not remove work- or school-managed software without checking with IT.

Review settings for the affected Wi-Fi network

Open Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the information button next to the network. Check DNS, HTTP Proxy, and Low Data Mode. If DNS or proxy information is unfamiliar, find out who set it up before changing or removing it. Apple describes these Wi-Fi options in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Keep Private Wi-Fi Address enabled by default. Apple says this feature uses a unique private address for each Wi-Fi network to help reduce tracking. Disable it only if a network administrator identifies a specific compatibility or authorization problem, since doing so reduces that privacy protection. See Apple’s explanation of Private Wi-Fi Address.

Check whether cellular data is masking slow Wi-Fi

Connectivity Assist can use cellular data to improve a connection when Wi-Fi is slow or unusable, which may make a weak Wi-Fi connection seem faster while increasing cellular data use. Apple’s current guidance describes it in Wi-Fi settings and says it supersedes Wi-Fi Assist on updated software. Check the cellular indicator and data usage when comparing results. Apple’s Connectivity Assist information explains the feature.

TP-Link Deco S4 Mesh AC1900 WiFi System, Deco S4(3-Pack)
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
  • Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

On older software, the setting may be called Wi-Fi Assist. Its behavior has restrictions: do not assume every app or background download switches to cellular. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Assist guidance.

If the problem stays with one Wi-Fi network

Check coverage, router, and internet service

  • Move closer to the router and compare performance in different rooms. Poor range or interference can affect the iPhone’s connection.
  • Restart the modem and router, and check whether the router has a firmware update.
  • If the router offers separate bands, compare them. Apple’s troubleshooting guide suggests trying 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz where available.
  • Check that the router supports the iPhone and is configured appropriately. Apple’s recommended Wi-Fi router settings include radio modes, security, DNS, and NAT.

Apple says the router’s Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) setting should be enabled; disabling it can affect performance and reliability. Avoid changing advanced router controls unless you know how to restore the original settings. If you do not manage the router, ask its administrator or your internet provider for help.

Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential

If no device on the network can access the internet, an outage or service issue may be involved. For a school, workplace, hotel, or public network, contact its administrator. Apple advises contacting your ISP when you do not manage the network, and contacting Apple if the iPhone cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network. Apple’s troubleshooting guide gives its escalation guidance.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

What you observe Where to investigate Next check
Other devices are slow on the same Wi-Fi Router, coverage, local network settings, or internet service Restart and update the router, compare available bands, or contact the network administrator or ISP. Apple and its router guidance cover these checks.
The iPhone is slow on several unrelated Wi-Fi networks iPhone software or settings, VPN/security filtering, or a device issue Restart and update, test VPN or security software, and contact Apple if the issue persists. Apple’s guide recommends comparing networks and escalating persistent problems.
Only one app is slow App or service behavior, VPN/filtering, or DNS Compare another app and another network before changing network settings. This clue narrows the investigation but does not establish a cause.
Wi-Fi seems slow but cellular works Wi-Fi signal or network; cellular fallback may also affect the comparison Check signal and the network’s settings, then review cellular use and Connectivity Assist. Apple explains Connectivity Assist here.
The iPhone has trouble only on a network that identifies or controls devices Network authorization or compatibility with private addressing Ask the administrator whether a change is necessary; keep Private Wi-Fi Address enabled unless there is a specific reason to turn it off. Apple’s Private Wi-Fi Address guidance explains the privacy feature.

Reset network settings only after simpler checks

Reset Network Settings is not a harmless first step. Apple says it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, along with cellular, VPN, and APN settings. You will need to rejoin Wi-Fi networks and restore any required configuration. If the iPhone is managed by work or school, check with IT before resetting. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide describes this reset and its effects.
