A stale location in Apple’s Find My app does not automatically mean your wallet tracker is broken. Find My updates an AirTag or compatible third-party item when it connects to the Find My network. Until that happens, the app may show only the last place and time the item was detected. Check the status and timestamp first, restore your iPhone’s Bluetooth, location, account and network settings, then allow time for the tracker to reconnect. Battery, charging and reset steps depend on the tracker model, so do not apply AirTag instructions to an unknown wallet card.
What a stale Find My location actually means
Find My is not a continuous live map for wallet trackers. Apple describes the process plainly: “The item’s location is updated when it connects to the Find My network.” An AirTag or registered third-party item can therefore remain on an old map position while it is out of range of your devices and has not yet been detected by other participating Apple devices.
The map marker is a report from the tracker’s most recent network connection. It is not confirmation that the wallet is still at that spot, and it does not establish a fixed refresh interval. A tracker in a drawer, underground garage, remote area or radio-shielding container may wait longer for another network connection. Conversely, a tracker in a busy public place can update when a compatible device passes nearby.

When Find My cannot locate the item now, Apple says the app can show the last known location and its timestamp. That is normal offline behavior rather than proof of hardware failure. Turn on Notify When Found so Find My can alert you when the item is detected again, and make sure notifications for Find My are allowed on your iPhone.

Read the item’s status before changing anything
- Open Find My on the iPhone or iPad associated with the tracker.
- Tap Items, then select the wallet tracker.
- Read the timestamp under the item name and note the exact status shown below it.
- Look for a current map position, a last-located place and time, Offline, or No location found.
- If the item cannot currently be located, enable Notify When Found. Open iPhone notification settings and confirm that Find My is permitted to send alerts.
Do not treat a displayed address as a live position. The timestamp tells you when Find My last received a report; the older it is, the less confidently it describes where the wallet is now.
What each Find My message tells you
Old timestamp or “last located”
Find My has a previous report but no newer connection. The tracker may be out of range, shielded, powered down or simply somewhere without nearby Find My network devices. Keep Notify When Found enabled while you search.
“Offline”
The item is not currently reachable. First check your iPhone-side prerequisites, then allow the tracker an opportunity to connect to the Find My network. An offline label does not identify whether the cause is distance, power, radio obstruction or a phone configuration problem.
“No location found”
Apple states that Find My can retain a last-known location for up to seven days. If more than seven days have passed since the item last sent its location through the Find My network, Find My cannot display that location and shows “No location found.” This is a time-based limitation, not a diagnosis of a particular card’s electronics.
“Not sharing location • Online”
Apple documents this wording for an online device that cannot send its location, such as when Location Services is unavailable. Do not automatically apply that device-specific explanation to every wallet tracker card. Confirm the item type and follow its maker’s instructions.

“Find Nearby” is unavailable
Nearby searching is a separate feature from an ordinary network update. Its requirements are covered below; the absence of Precision Finding does not by itself mean that Find My network updates have stopped.
Restore the iPhone or iPad prerequisites
These checks address the phone that manages the item. They can correct permissions, account and connectivity problems, but they cannot make a distant tracker transmit when it has not connected to the Find My network.
Recommended Free Tools
Install the current system update
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest iOS or iPadOS version offered for that device. Apple’s support guidance recommends updating when items do not appear or behave correctly. Requirements can change between AirTag generations and operating-system releases, so use the current Apple documentation for the exact minimum version rather than relying on an old checklist.
Turn on Bluetooth
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on. A disabled Bluetooth radio can prevent local discovery and nearby interactions even though the phone still has an internet connection.
Give Find My precise location access
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, ensure Location Services is on, then select Find My. Allow location access as requested and enable Precise Location for the most accurate local results. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS version, but Find My must have location permission rather than merely being installed.

Resolve Apple Account and iCloud prompts
Check Settings for any Apple Account sign-in, verification or iCloud synchronization alert. Complete pending prompts. If iCloud data sync is paused, follow the resume instruction shown on the device. An account that is not fully configured can interfere with item management even when Bluetooth is working.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a reliable connection and restart
Connect to dependable Wi-Fi or mobile data, then restart the iPhone or iPad. A restart clears temporary radio, permission and app-state problems. After it comes back on, open Find My again and inspect the item’s timestamp; do not expect the timestamp to change until the tracker itself is detected.
Give the tracker a chance to reconnect
If the wallet is away from your iPhone, its update depends on another device participating in Apple’s Find My network detecting it. The old location can remain visible until that happens. Carrying your own phone past the wallet will help only when the tracker is close enough for the supported local connection; it does not remotely force a refresh.
There is no official universal refresh interval to promise. Apple’s documentation explains the connection-based behavior but does not specify that an item updates every few minutes or hours. Avoid repeatedly refreshing the map as a test. Instead, leave Notify When Found enabled, keep Find My notifications allowed, and check again after the item has had a realistic opportunity to encounter the network.
Search the last reported area safely and legally. If the marker is at a workplace, transit facility or private property, do not enter restricted areas based solely on an old timestamp. The marker is evidence of a previous report, not proof that the wallet remains there.

Nearby finding is different from a network update
When you believe the wallet is close, open the item in Find My and look for Find Nearby or Precision Finding. This mode requires a supported iPhone with Ultra Wideband, Find My location access and proximity to the AirTag. Walls, furniture, vehicles and other objects can weaken or distort the signal. The AirTag may also simply be outside usable range.
- If Find Nearby appears, follow the on-screen direction and distance indicators while moving slowly.
- If it does not appear, verify that your iPhone model supports Ultra Wideband and that Find My has location permission.
- If the feature starts and then loses the signal, move into an open area and reduce obstructions.
- If you own a third-party card rather than an AirTag, consult its documentation; AirTag-specific Precision Finding behavior is not universal.
A missing Nearby button does not prove that the Find My network is broken. Local precision hardware and crowd-sourced network detection are separate paths.
Check power only after identifying the tracker
Wallet trackers do not all use the same power design. Some have a replaceable cell, some recharge, and some use a sealed battery. Apple’s AirTag troubleshooting allows for battery replacement, but that advice cannot safely be generalized to every thin wallet card.
If the item is an AirTag
Use Apple’s current AirTag battery instructions and verify the specified cell and replacement procedure before opening it. A depleted battery is a plausible cause when all phone-side settings are correct and the item has stopped reporting. After replacement, keep the AirTag near the iPhone long enough to confirm that it is recognized, then check the timestamp in Find My.

Identify the exact brand and model first. Find the manufacturer’s instructions for charging, battery replacement, pairing, firmware and reset. Do not pry open a sealed card, insert an AirTag battery into it or assume that an AirTag sound or reset sequence applies. A card can appear offline because it needs charging, because its sealed battery has reached end of life, or because its own setup procedure was not completed; only the maker’s documentation can distinguish those cases.

When a reset or re-pair is appropriate
There is no universal reset sequence for Find My wallet cards. Resetting an item can remove its association, erase settings or require account verification, so do it only when the tracker maker explicitly directs you to do so.
- Record the model and read its current support article.
- Back up any information the maker says will be lost.
- Remove the item from Find My only if the manufacturer or Apple Support instructs you to.
- Perform the documented reset or pairing process exactly, including any required charging period.
- Register the item again with the same Apple Account and test a nearby update before returning it to the wallet.
If the card remains offline after its documented power and pairing steps, use the manufacturer’s support route. Apple Support is the appropriate escalation for Apple Account, iOS, Bluetooth or Find My service problems; the card maker is the authority for card firmware, charging hardware and model-specific resets.
Decide whether replacement is sensible
Replace a card only after confirming that the problem is not a stale, pre-network timestamp or an iPhone permission issue. If the existing card has failed, choose a replacement that explicitly supports Apple Find My rather than relying on a generic “Bluetooth tracker” description. Apple supports registered third-party Find My items, but compatibility is model-specific.
| What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Explicit Apple Find My compatibility | A device that works with a separate app or ordinary Bluetooth is not automatically visible in Find My. |
| Setup and account support | Confirm that the maker documents registration to an Apple Account and removal or transfer when ownership changes. |
| Thickness and dimensions | Wallet slots have limited clearance; compare the maker’s stated dimensions with your wallet before ordering. |
| Power design | Check whether the card is rechargeable, uses a replaceable battery or has a sealed power source, and read the stated service procedure. |
| Alerts and sound | Verify any claimed speaker, sound or separation-alert feature for the exact model rather than assuming AirTag features. |
| Warranty and support | Use current manufacturer terms and confirm how battery or charging failures are handled. |
No single card specification, price or performance result can be applied to every product. Compare current manufacturer pages for the exact model and region.
Safety and privacy considerations
Find My-compatible accessories can be used for legitimate item recovery, but an unknown tracker traveling with you can also raise a safety concern. Apple provides guidance for alerts about an AirTag, Find My network accessory or compatible Bluetooth location-tracking device that is separated from its owner. If you receive such an alert, read the instructions in the notification and prioritize your personal safety. Do not disable protections or confront a suspected person solely because an old map marker appears nearby.
For your own tracker, keep ownership information current and remove it from your Apple Account before giving it away. A replacement card should be registered only after confirming that the previous owner has removed it, because an item can remain associated with another account until that process is completed.
A practical decision tree
- The timestamp is recent and the map is plausible: the tracker is updating; use directions or sound if available and search the reported area.
- The timestamp is old but present: enable Notify When Found, verify phone prerequisites and wait for another Find My network connection.
- The status is Offline: complete the iPhone checks, then investigate range, obstructions and the tracker’s power design.
- The status is No location found: more than seven days have passed since a network report; search other evidence and check the tracker’s model-specific power and setup instructions.
- Nearby finding is missing: check Ultra Wideband support, location permission and proximity; do not infer a network failure from this local-feature problem.
- The card still fails after documented checks: contact the card maker for hardware or firmware issues, or Apple for account and Find My issues.
What not to do
- Do not interpret a last-known pin as a guaranteed current location.
- Do not promise a fixed update frequency that Apple does not specify.
- Do not apply AirTag battery, sound or reset instructions to an unidentified wallet card.
- Do not buy a replacement based only on the phrase “Bluetooth tracker”; verify Apple Find My support.
- Do not keep resetting or removing the item from your account without knowing whether that action will require re-pairing or ownership transfer.
Apple’s documented limits
Apple’s support pages explain how network-based updates, last-known locations, notifications, setup prerequisites and Precision Finding work. They do not establish a universal refresh interval, a universal repair procedure for third-party wallet cards or a product-wide battery rule. Treat those as model-dependent details and use the exact instructions for your tracker.
