A clean preview does not guarantee a clean full-resolution export. Some editors render previews at reduced size, then process the export through a different path. In one reported case, a filter ran on separate strips without enough neighboring pixels at their edges, leaving visible seams where the strips met. That is a plausible explanation—not a confirmed diagnosis for every editor or image.

First check whether the seams are really in the exported image

  1. Open the exported file in an image viewer and inspect it at 100% zoom. Look closely at a repeated line: a narrow, sharp boundary differs from a broad tonal band.
  2. Compare the preview and export at the same pixel dimensions. A preview displayed smaller can conceal pixel-level differences; scaling changes how pixels are rendered on screen. A Photoshop Community Expert recommends viewing at 100% when checking pixel-level behavior: Adobe Community discussion, July 4, 2022.
  3. Note whether lines recur at regular intervals. Repetition aligned with likely strip or tile boundaries is a clue worth reporting, but it does not by itself establish the cause.

How tiled filtering can leave a seam

Neighborhood filters—including blur and sharpen—calculate each output pixel using nearby input pixels. If an editor processes an image in separate strips or tiles, pixels near a cut need context from beyond that strip. Without enough neighboring pixels, calculations at the edge can differ from those in the adjoining section, making the processing boundary visible.

A first-person account matching this symptom describes a reduced-resolution preview and a full-resolution export processed in strips. The author attributes the seams to insufficient neighboring-pixel context and describes extending each strip with overlap, filtering it, then trimming the overlap before stitching the result together: Lank_M, DEV Community, September 10, 2026. This is one author’s technical account, not a controlled test or proof that every editor works this way.

If your lines repeat at regular intervals, ask the editor’s developer whether full-resolution filtering is tiled and whether the filter uses overlap, sometimes called a halo, around each tile. The overlap supplies neighboring pixels for the calculation; trimming it before reassembly avoids retaining duplicate edge pixels.

Check scaling and interpolation without assuming they are the cause

Preview and export can differ because they do not necessarily use the same pixel grid or render path. Resizing also affects how an image appears: interpolation determines how intermediate pixel values are rendered when an image is scaled. Apple documents interpolation options of none, low, medium, and high for image rendering: Apple Developer Documentation: NSImageInterpolation.

That documentation establishes that interpolation quality can vary; it does not diagnose a seam in a particular editor. Compare at matching pixel dimensions and inspect the exported pixels before blaming interpolation. Resampling filters can produce their own artifacts, but that general possibility does not identify the source of a particular line: ImageMagick Usage Documentation: Resampling Filters.

Separate a narrow seam from gradient banding

A thin line at regular intervals suggests a different symptom from broad steps or stripes through a smooth gradient. For broad banding, compare a lossless export with a JPEG. JPEG conversion and compression can contribute to banding in subtle gradients; upload processing can also affect them. Adobe Community discussion covers possible bit-depth, JPEG, and display-path contributors, while Glass explains banding after upload: Adobe Community discussion, October 4, 2021; Glass Help: Why do I sometimes see banding in my photos after uploading?.

Those are possible explanations for gradient banding, not evidence that compression caused a narrow, repeated seam. A lossless-versus-JPEG comparison can help distinguish output-related banding, but it does not prove the cause of a line-shaped defect.

What to send the editor’s developer

If the cause remains unclear, provide the original image and exported file, along with enough detail to reproduce the result:

  • The editor name and version, the filter and its settings, and the exact steps used.
  • The canvas dimensions, export dimensions, file format, and any resizing or upload step.
  • Whether the defect is a narrow seam or broad banding, whether it repeats at regular intervals, and whether it is visible at 100%.
  • Whether the same filter result changes when exported losslessly instead of as JPEG.

For a blur, sharpen, or other neighborhood operation, include the filter in the report: neighboring-pixel sampling is central to the strip-processing explanation described in the matching account. Do not assume interpolation is responsible merely because the preview and export look different; the editor’s actual processing path and exported pixels are what need diagnosis.
