A normal Ethernet cable should release when you press its flexible RJ45 latch and pull the connector straight out by its plug body. If it will not move with light pressure, stop pulling. A blocked latch, protective cable boot, damaged connector, or model-specific port mechanism can make the cable feel stuck—and extra force can damage the cable or the device.
How a normal RJ45 plug releases
The small plastic tab on top of an RJ45 plug is a spring latch. It hooks inside the Ethernet port to prevent the plug from sliding out. Pressing the tab down disengages that hook; then the connector—not the cable—should be eased straight out.
- Hold the device steady so the port is not being pulled or twisted.
- Grip the clear or colored plastic connector body close to the port.
- Press the release tab fully down with a fingertip.
- While keeping the tab depressed, gently pull the connector straight out.
Do not yank the cable, twist the plug sideways, or keep increasing force when the latch has not released. The cable jacket and internal conductors are not designed to act as a handle.

The release tab is hard to reach
Ports recessed into a laptop, dock, router or wall panel can leave too little room for a finger to press the tab. A plug may also be installed upside down or close to another cable, making the latch difficult to see.

A snagless boot covers the latch
Snagless Ethernet cables have a molded boot that covers and protects the release tab so it does not catch on other cables or snap during handling. That protection can also make the tab less exposed to a fingertip. StarTech explains the distinction between molded and snagless cable designs in its FAQ: Network Cables Molded vs. Snagless. A snagless boot is not a remedy for a plug that is already jammed; it only changes access to the latch.
The latch or port is damaged
A broken tab may no longer move far enough to clear the port’s retaining edge. Conversely, a bent or damaged port can hold a plug even when the tab appears to move. If plastic is cracked, the plug is skewed, or the port is loose, stop before attempting another extraction.

The device uses a special port design
Some computers use expandable Ethernet ports or a protective connector door. In those designs, the correct movement is not the same as the ordinary “press and pull straight” method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSafe checks before trying again
- Identify the device and port. Note the exact laptop, dock, router or server model and look up its manual or support article.
- Inspect the latch. Confirm that the tab is intact, visible and able to move downward.
- Check clearance. Look for a neighboring cable, recessed port or bulky boot blocking your finger.
- Keep the pull aligned. Once the latch is down, pull on the connector body in the same axis as the port.
- Use only gentle pressure. If the plug does not begin to slide, release it and stop rather than escalating force.
Model-specific exceptions
Dell expandable Ethernet ports
Dell documents a special procedure for listed Latitude and Vostro models with expandable Ethernet ports. Press the port downward while pressing the cable’s release tab, then remove the cable. Dell specifically warns that pulling upward on the port while depressing the tab makes removal harder and that excessive force can damage the cable or port. Follow the instructions for the affected models in Dell’s support article: How to Remove the Ethernet Cable from the Expandable Ethernet Port on Dell Ultrathin Laptops. This movement is not a universal technique for every RJ45 socket.

ThinkPad E14 Type 20RA and 20RB made before April 21, 2020
Lenovo reports that the Ethernet connector door can make removal difficult on specified ThinkPad E14 units. Its procedure is to slowly and carefully push the cable down, then pull it up, repeating that motion while slowly pulling the cable out. If the cable still will not release, Lenovo says to contact support. The model and manufacturing qualification matter; do not apply this instruction to all ThinkPad computers. See Lenovo’s notice: Ethernet (RJ45) cable may be difficult to remove – ThinkPad E14.
IBM System x3550
IBM has a model-specific service note for Ethernet cable extraction on the System x3550. Its workaround reduces how much the connector latch engages the planar Ethernet connector. That is service context for the specified server, not a general user procedure. Use the IBM support page and the server’s service documentation: Ethernet cable extraction – IBM System x3550.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
What not to do
- Do not pull on the cable jacket or bend it sharply at the plug.
- Do not pry upward on an expandable port unless the device maker explicitly instructs that movement.
- Do not force the connector with pliers, knives, screwdrivers or other improvised metal tools. The manufacturer guidance reviewed here does not establish such tools as safe across devices, and they can short contacts, break the latch or damage the port.
- Do not keep rocking a connector after the latch is depressed but the plug remains immovable; that points to a damaged or model-specific mechanism.
When to stop and get help
Stop the attempt if the latch cannot be depressed, the plug or port is visibly damaged, the port moves in its housing, or gentle model-specific instructions do not work. Powering down is prudent when the device maker recommends it, but it does not replace the correct mechanical release. Contact the computer, dock, router or server manufacturer’s support, or have a qualified technician remove the connector.
Replacing a damaged cable afterward
If the latch is broken or the boot obstructs normal access, replace the patch cable rather than repeatedly stressing the port. Choose a cable length that leaves enough bend room, the category required by your network, and a connector style that fits the port’s clearance. A snagless design can help prevent future tab damage, but it will not free a connector that is currently stuck.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I pull harder if the RJ45 tab is pressed?
No. If the plug does not slide out with gentle, straight pressure after the latch is fully depressed, stop and check the device model for a special release procedure.
Can I use a screwdriver to press the Ethernet latch?
Avoid improvised metal tools. They can damage the latch, port or contacts, and the reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish them as a universal safe method.
Are snagless Ethernet cables easier to unplug?
Not necessarily. Their boots protect the latch from snagging, but the tab may be less exposed to a finger. They are a replacement option after damage, not a solution for a plug already stuck in a port.
