A plastic taste or smell is most common when a kettle with a plastic tank is new. Start with the kettle’s own first-use instructions: boil fresh water and discard it for the number of cycles the manufacturer specifies. If the taste remains, use only a cleaning method approved for that model. Tefal gives a bicarbonate-of-soda procedure for persistent taste in certain plastic-tank kettles, while its vinegar and citric-acid instructions are for mineral scale. Do not immerse the kettle or electrical base, and stop using the appliance if the cord is damaged, the odor persists after the approved cleaning, or you see electrical damage.
What a plastic taste usually means
Manufacturers describe a plastic-like taste or smell as something that can occur when a plastic-tank kettle is new. Tefal says this “usually happens when the kettle is new” and advises pouring away water from the first few uses. Tower’s support guidance, dated 9 July 2025, similarly says new kettles may have a plastic smell initially and recommends boiling and discarding water two to three times before first use.
Those are product-support instructions, not a universal rule for every kettle. The number of cycles, permitted cleaners and maximum fill level depend on the model, the materials inside it and its manual. A stainless-steel kettle with a plastic lid or water-level window may have different instructions from a kettle whose entire tank is plastic.

Scale usually appears as chalky deposits, flakes or a rough white film and is treated with a descaling procedure. Vinegar or citric acid may remove scale, but a manufacturer does not necessarily say that either product will remove a plastic taste. Treat the symptom you actually have rather than combining several cleaners.

The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that every plastic odor is harmless, identify one chemical cause for all kettles or provide a prevalence figure. If the smell is unexplained and continues after the model’s approved cleaning, the safest response is to stop using the kettle and contact the manufacturer or an approved service provider.
Do this first if the kettle is new
1. Read the model-specific instructions
Find the supplied manual or the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model number. Look for sections titled “Before first use,” “Cleaning,” “Odor,” “Taste” or “Descaling.” Check whether the kettle has a removable filter, a minimum and maximum fill line, or a warning against particular cleaners.
Do not rely only on the shape or brand of a similar kettle. Different versions can use different plastics, filters, heating plates and approved cleaning products. If the model number is on a label underneath the base, unplug the kettle and let it cool before turning it over to read it.

2. Boil and discard water
Fill the kettle with fresh water within its marked range, boil it and pour the water away. Repeat only as many times as the manual directs. Tower specifies two to three boil-and-discard cycles before first use. Tefal refers to discarding water from the first few uses rather than prescribing one cycle count for every product.
- Remove packaging, labels and any loose material from the kettle and base.
- Fill with clean water without exceeding the maximum line.
- Place the kettle correctly on its electrical base and complete a normal boil.
- Pour the water away; do not drink it as the first-use rinse.
- Repeat the cycle according to the model’s instructions, then rinse if the manual requests it.
Do not add detergent, fragrance, essential oils or an unapproved descaler during this initial process. A cleaner can leave its own taste or damage a component that the manual does not identify as chemical-resistant.
Check the removable parts
Some kettles have a removable limescale filter at the spout. If the manual says it can be removed, wash or rinse it only as instructed and reinstall it correctly. Do not pull out a fixed screen or use a sharp object to scrape the heating plate. Packaging residue, a filter that was not rinsed, or water trapped around a lid can make the first few cycles smell different, but the model instructions should determine what may be removed or washed.
If the plastic taste remains after first use
Use the exact remedy approved for your kettle
For a persistent plastic taste in a plastic-tank kettle, Tefal’s FAQ for the Coppertinto KI280G10 gives this model-specific method: fill the kettle to its maximum level, add two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda, boil, pour away the water and rinse the kettle. This is manufacturer advice for the cited product family, not a universal recipe for all electric kettles.

- Confirm in your manual that bicarbonate of soda is permitted and that the kettle may be filled to its maximum level for cleaning.
- Fill to the stated maximum line with water.
- Add two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda.
- Boil the solution using the kettle’s normal control.
- Pour the solution away once the cycle is complete.
- Rinse as directed by the manual, using clean water and avoiding the electrical base.
If your manual does not authorize this procedure, do not assume that the same quantity, concentration or heating step is suitable. Contact the manufacturer for the approved method instead. Bicarbonate of soda is not a substitute for a descaler, and a descaler is not automatically a fix for plastic taste.
Rinse thoroughly without immersing the appliance
Keep water inside the tank only. Never submerge the kettle body, plug, cord or base. If the design allows water to reach a removable filter, clean that part only as the manual describes. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth and dry it before reconnecting the appliance.
Rinsing is part of the treatment, not an optional finishing step. A cleaner left behind can create a new odor or taste that is difficult to distinguish from the original complaint. Use the number of rinses stated by the manual, and do not operate the kettle while its exterior, connector or base is wet.
When the problem is mineral scale instead
Scale is a maintenance problem caused by minerals in water. It can affect heating performance and leave visible deposits, but it should not be confused with a new-kettle plastic taste. Use a descaling treatment only when the manual permits it and only at the stated concentration.
Tefal’s cited white-vinegar method
Tefal’s guidance specifies 0.5 litre of commercial 8-degree white vinegar. It says to leave the vinegar in the kettle for one hour without heating it, then empty the kettle and rinse it five or six times. The “8-degree” specification belongs to that instruction; ordinary vinegar of a different strength is not automatically interchangeable.
- Verify that your kettle manual permits white vinegar and identify the required concentration.
- Measure 0.5 litre of commercial 8-degree white vinegar.
- Put it in the kettle and leave it for one hour without switching the kettle on.
- Empty the kettle safely.
- Rinse five or six times, or follow the larger number if your manual requires more rinsing.
- Repeat only if the manual says a second treatment is appropriate and scale remains.
Tefal’s cited citric-acid method
The same Tefal guidance offers an alternative using 0.5 litre of water and 25 grams of citric acid. It says to boil the mixture and leave it for 15 minutes, then empty the kettle and rinse five or six times. These quantities and times are tied to the cited Tefal instructions.
- Check that citric acid is approved for your model.
- Measure 0.5 litre of water and add 25 grams of citric acid.
- Boil the mixture in the kettle.
- Leave it for 15 minutes after boiling, as instructed.
- Empty the kettle and rinse five or six times.
- Repeat only under the manual’s directions.
Tefal also says a descaler made specifically for a plastic kettle must be used according to that product’s instructions. Do not substitute a stronger solution, extend the soak or heat a product that the label says not to heat.

KitchenAid’s odor-cleaning procedure
KitchenAid’s product-help guidance describes a different odor-cleaning approach: use one cup (0.25 litre) of white vinegar, then fill the kettle with water, bring it to a boil and drain the clean water. Because this quantity and sequence differ from Tefal’s instructions, use the method for your own model rather than combining steps from different manufacturers.

- Confirm that your manual permits the KitchenAid-style vinegar procedure or provides an equivalent one.
- Add one cup (0.25 litre) of white vinegar as directed.
- Follow the specified waiting or cleaning step; do not heat vinegar unless the manual says to do so.
- Fill with clean water, bring it to a boil and drain it.
- Complete any additional rinsing required by your manual before drinking water from the kettle.
Which remedy fits which symptom?
| Symptom or task | Procedure described by a manufacturer | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic taste in a new kettle | Boil and discard water for the number of cycles in the model instructions. Tower specifies two to three cycles; Tefal says to discard water from the first few uses. | Cycle counts vary by model. Do not treat two or three as a universal requirement. |
| Plastic taste that remains | Tefal’s cited plastic-tank guidance: maximum fill, two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda, boil, discard and rinse. | Use only if the exact manual permits it. It is not a universal kettle recipe. |
| Mineral scale | Tefal lists either 0.5 litre of 8-degree white vinegar left for one hour without heating, or 0.5 litre water with 25 grams citric acid, boiled and left for 15 minutes. | Rinse five or six times under Tefal’s instruction. Check your own manual and the descaler label first. |
| General odor cleaning | KitchenAid describes one cup (0.25 litre) of white vinegar, followed by filling with water, boiling and draining. | Use your model’s sequence and quantities. Do not combine it with another manufacturer’s method. |
| Damaged cord, plug, base or persistent unexplained odor | Stop using the kettle and contact the manufacturer or an approved service provider. | Do not dismantle the kettle or continue operating it to test whether the smell disappears. |
Questions to answer before adding any cleaner
Ask what the symptom looks like, where it occurs and what the manual allows. A new taste from water in the tank points you first toward the first-use procedure. Chalky particles or a rough film point toward scale. A smell concentrated around the base, plug or cord is an electrical warning rather than a reason to pour vinegar into the tank.
Also check whether the proposed method requires heat. Tefal’s vinegar instruction specifically says not to heat the vinegar, whereas its citric-acid instruction calls for boiling the mixture. KitchenAid’s sequence includes boiling clean water after the vinegar step. These differences matter: do not copy the heating step from one brand’s directions into another brand’s procedure.
Never increase a dose because the first attempt did not work, use two cleaners together, or leave a solution soaking longer than directed. Stronger or longer treatment is not established as safer or more effective for an unidentified kettle material.
Electrical and handling safety
- Do not immerse the kettle, electrical base, plug or cord in water.
- Keep the connector and base dry while filling, cleaning and rinsing.
- Unplug the kettle and allow it to cool before cleaning or moving it.
- Do not use the appliance if the power cord is damaged. Tefal says a damaged cord should be replaced by an approved repair centre.
- Do not open the housing or attempt an internal repair to investigate an odor.
- Stop using the kettle if you see melted plastic, scorch marks, arcing, smoke, a loose connector or other electrical damage.
A smell that appears only during an initial, manufacturer-approved cleaning cycle is still a reason to follow the manual closely. If the odor becomes stronger, changes to a burning or solvent-like smell, or remains after the specified rinse, disconnect the kettle and seek service.

Case 1: The kettle is brand new and the water tastes plastic-like
Perform the prescribed boil-and-discard cycles. Use Tower’s two-to-three-cycle guidance only as an example of one manufacturer’s instruction, not as a rule for your model. If the taste disappears, return to normal use and follow the manual’s routine cleaning schedule.
Case 2: The kettle is new but the taste remains
Look for a model-specific persistent-taste procedure. If your manual is the Tefal guidance cited above, use the two-teaspoon bicarbonate method and rinse. If the manual gives no approved treatment, ask the manufacturer before adding any substance.

Case 3: The kettle has visible white deposits or flakes
Treat this as possible scale. Choose the permitted vinegar, citric-acid or commercial-descaler procedure, observe its stated concentration and contact time, and complete every required rinse. Do not assume that removing scale will eliminate a plastic taste.
Case 4: The smell is on the outside or near the base
Disconnect the appliance and inspect the cord, plug, connector and base without opening them. A smell near electrical parts, visible damage or heat discoloration is not a cleaning problem. Stop using the kettle and arrange approved service.

- Empty standing water after use when the manual recommends it, rather than repeatedly reheating old water.
- Use fresh water and stay within the minimum and maximum fill marks.
- Descale at the interval specified for your water conditions and model.
- Rinse completely after any approved cleaner; Tefal’s cited descaling instructions require five or six rinses.
- Keep the base, connector, plug and cord dry.
- Do not store cleaning chemicals in the kettle or leave an unapproved solution soaking in it.
- Keep the manual or model number available so you can verify quantities before every treatment.
What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—tell you
Tefal, Tower and KitchenAid provide practical product-support steps for new-kettle taste, odor cleaning and scale. Their instructions establish how those manufacturers want particular models treated; they do not prove that every plastic smell has the same source or that every model can tolerate the same ingredient.
There is no cited prevalence statistic for plastic-smelling kettles and no general health conclusion in these sources. Avoid assuming that an odor is harmless, but also avoid treating a brief new-kettle taste as proof of a specific toxic exposure. The actionable distinction is whether the manual’s first-use process resolves it and whether the appliance remains electrically sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times should I boil a new kettle before drinking the water?
Follow the exact manual. Tower says to boil and discard water two to three times, while Tefal refers to discarding water from the first few uses without setting one universal count.
Can I use baking soda to remove a plastic taste?
Only when the kettle’s own instructions permit it. Tefal’s Coppertinto guidance specifies filling to maximum, adding two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda, boiling, discarding and rinsing. That quantity is not a universal recipe.

Will vinegar remove a plastic taste?
Manufacturer instructions cited here use vinegar primarily for odor cleaning or mineral scale. They do not establish that vinegar removes every plastic taste. Use it only in the sequence and concentration approved for your model.
How is plastic taste different from limescale?
A plastic-like taste is commonly reported with some new plastic-tank kettles. Limescale is associated with visible chalky deposits, flakes or a rough film and requires a permitted descaling procedure.
Can I put the kettle, base or cord in the sink to rinse it?
No. Keep water inside the tank and never immerse the kettle body, electrical base, plug or cord. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and dry it before reconnecting.
What if the smell remains after cleaning?
Stop using the kettle, do not try stronger or repeated unapproved treatments, and contact the manufacturer or an approved service provider. Persistent unexplained odor warrants service even without visible damage.
What does a burning smell near the base mean?
Disconnect the kettle and inspect the cord, plug, connector and base without opening them. Smoke, scorching, melted plastic, arcing or a damaged cord is an electrical safety issue, not a descaling problem.
The Bottom Line
For a new kettle, follow the model’s boil-and-discard instructions first. If the taste persists, use only a cleaner and quantity the manufacturer approves; keep plastic-taste treatment separate from scale removal. Rinse as directed, never immerse electrical parts, and stop using the kettle for visible damage, a damaged cord or an odor that remains unexplained after approved cleaning.
