If a player seems to “wander” into the wrong area in EA SPORTS FC, the formation is usually not broken. Two separate systems are being confused: the lineup slot determines whether the player is in a preferred position, while the assigned role and focus determine how that player behaves once the team attacks or defends. A player can therefore start in a valid slot and still move somewhere unexpected, or be placed in an unsuitable slot before the match even begins.
Fix the problem in this order: check the tactic that is actually active, verify the player’s preferred positions, inspect the role and focus, compare the with-ball and without-ball views, and then check every custom tactic that may be selected during the match. FC 26 makes roles less restrictive and reduces the penalty for an out-of-position assignment, but matching players to suitable positions remains the most reliable way to get predictable movement.
What “out of position” means in FC
EA defines a player as out of position when the assigned slot is not one of that player’s preferred positions. This is a lineup issue, not simply a complaint that the player moved during a possession.
In FC 25, an out-of-position player is marked with a yellow exclamation icon. EA says the player can still be used there, but the role and focus are simplified and performance is lower than that of a player designed for the position. The icon is therefore a warning about the assignment you made, not proof that the game has randomly rearranged your team.

A player who is in a preferred position can still leave the area shown on the formation screen. That movement is normally controlled by the selected role and focus. Formation, position, role and focus answer different questions:

Thinking of the formation as a fixed picture causes most confusion. It is a starting framework, not a promise that every player will remain on the same coordinates for the entire match.
Why a player can look misplaced even when the lineup is correct
The formation is mainly the defensive reference shape
EA’s FC IQ explanation describes formation as the shape the team uses to line up and defend without the ball. When possession changes, roles influence where players move, which lanes they occupy and how they transition between attack and defense. A midfielder who steps forward to support an attack has not necessarily abandoned the formation; that may be the behavior assigned by the role.

A player may have a role that sounds suitable in one area but still be assigned to an unsuitable position. Conversely, a player can be in a preferred position but have a role that pulls them away from the location you expected. Check the slot first, then the role. Do not assume that a similar-sounding role at another position has the same movement or familiarity.
Role Familiarity changes the quality of the behavior
Role Familiarity affects how effectively a player performs the responsibilities of a role, the movement and behavior options available to that player, and the transitions between attacking and defending. EA notes that a base role can still be viable, so a player does not become unusable merely because the role is not the strongest possible match. Familiarity is a reason to prefer a natural fit when two players are otherwise comparable, not a reason to discard every imperfect setup.
Custom tactics can use different instructions
Each custom tactic can have its own formation, settings and player roles while sharing the same squad lineup. If a player looks correct in one tactic and wrong after you switch tactics, the active tactic is the first thing to inspect. Editing the default tactic does not automatically make every other saved tactic identical.

How to diagnose the problem before changing anything
Use the following quick test to identify which system is responsible. It prevents you from replacing a formation when only one role needs changing.

If the player is already in the wrong slot on the tactics screen or during the defensive setup, suspect a position assignment. If the player starts correctly and drifts only after you have the ball, suspect role or focus.
- Check for the out-of-position warning. A yellow exclamation mark in FC 25 indicates that the assigned slot is not a preferred position and that the available role behavior is simplified.
- Compare both tactical views. Use the with-ball view and the without-ball view provided in the tactics interface. A different attacking shape is expected when roles deliberately move players; a bad starting slot remains a problem in both views.
- Ask whether the issue follows a tactic switch. If it begins when you activate another custom tactic, compare that tactic’s formation and role assignments rather than changing the squad globally.
Step-by-step: put players into suitable positions
1. Open the tactic that is active in the match
Enter the squad or tactics screen and select the tactic you are actually using. In modes that allow several custom tactics or quick tactical changes, do not assume the first tactic shown is the one currently selected. The exact menu wording and controller prompts can vary by game version, platform and language, so follow the on-screen prompt for opening player instructions and role details.
2. Inspect the player’s preferred positions
Select the player and compare the assigned slot with the preferred positions displayed in the player information panel. If the slot is not listed, you have found a genuine position mismatch. Move the player to a listed position, replace the player with someone whose preferred position matches the slot, or choose a formation that accommodates the existing squad.
Do not treat a familiar real-world position as proof that the game considers the player suitable there. The relevant test is the preferred-position information shown for that player in your current version of FC.
3. Correct the slot before fine-tuning instructions
Make the position match first. A role selected for a player in an unsuitable slot may be simplified, and changing its focus cannot turn that slot into a preferred position. If the player has several preferred positions, choose the one that best fits the surrounding players and the shape you want without the ball.

4. Review the available role and focus
With the player in a suitable slot, open the role and focus choices offered for that position. Read the movement description or preview supplied by the game and select the behavior that matches your intention:

- Choose a more conservative option when you need the player to hold the line or protect space.
- Choose an advancing or supporting option when you want the player to join attacks or occupy higher lanes.
- Use a roaming-style option only when you are prepared for the player to leave the nominal zone during possession.
- Compare roles at the same position rather than assuming an identical label elsewhere has identical behavior.
The available choices depend on the player and position. If a desired role or focus is not offered, that is an in-game restriction, not a menu error.
5. Compare with-ball and without-ball views
Toggle between the two views after selecting the role. If the player occupies the expected defensive slot without the ball but moves inside, wide or forward with the ball, the difference is probably role-driven. If the player is misplaced in both views, return to the preferred-position check and the formation itself.
6. Save, leave and reopen the tactic
Save the tactic using the game’s on-screen command, leave the tactics panel and open it again. Confirm that the player, position, role and focus still display the choices you made. This is a practical verification step; it does not imply that EA has documented a general save-related bug.
FC 26: what changed and what did not
EA’s FC 26 gameplay deep dive says player roles are less restrictive than before. The update includes a Versatile focus for selected roles, improvements to regular Roles and Roles+, and a drastic reduction in the negative impact of being out of position.

These changes make experimentation more forgiving; they do not make every player interchangeable. Use the FC 26 options actually presented for the selected player, and treat Versatile as an available alternative rather than a universal setting.
Fixes for the most common symptoms
The player is wrong before kickoff
Open the active tactic and inspect the assigned slot. If it is not a preferred position, correct the position or change the formation. Role changes are secondary until this warning is removed.

The player is correct without the ball but drifts in possession
That pattern is consistent with role-driven movement. Review the role and focus, then use the with-ball preview to see whether the movement is intentional. Select a more conservative focus if you need the player to remain closer to the base location.
The player moves too far forward or abandons a lane
Check for an advancing, supporting or roaming emphasis. Compare an alternative focus at the same position before rebuilding the formation. Also consider the surrounding roles: a teammate’s movement can open a lane that another player is instructed to fill.
The warning appears after moving a player to fill an injury or suspension
The replacement may not have that position among the preferred positions. Use a natural fit if available, or accept the simplified behavior temporarily and compensate with a role that preserves the most important defensive or attacking duty.
The issue appears only after switching custom tactics
Inspect the tactic you activated, not just the tactic you normally edit. Compare its formation, player slots, roles and focuses with the setup that works. Because tactics can have separate settings while sharing the same lineup, one saved tactic can contain a mismatch that another does not.
Players appear to swap unexpectedly during a match
Community reports describe players changing places after formation changes, but the official EA material covered here does not establish that behavior as a widespread current bug. First rule out a different active tactic, an out-of-position assignment and role-driven movement. Reproduce the situation with a simple formation, record which tactic is active and check whether the same change occurs after reopening the tactics screen. Without a confirmed cause, avoid treating an isolated anecdote as proof that every formation switch is faulty.

Formation choices that prevent recurring mismatches
Build around the players you actually have
Start with the preferred positions in your squad, then choose a formation that gives the important players suitable slots. This is more dependable than choosing a fashionable shape and forcing several players into unfamiliar locations.

Protect the spine first
When compromises are unavoidable, prioritize the goalkeeper, central defenders, central midfielders and striker positions that define your defensive structure and progression. A wide player filling a neighboring wide slot may be easier to manage than a central defender being used in midfield, but the preferred-position panel remains the deciding evidence for the individual assignment.
Use roles to express intent, not to repair a bad slot
Roles are for choosing movement and responsibilities after the position is suitable. If you use a role to disguise an unsuitable slot, the simplified behavior and lower quality associated with the mismatch can remain.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the game version and open the current tactics interface.
- Select the tactic that is active, including any alternate custom tactic.
- Check every player whose location looks wrong against the preferred positions displayed in-game.
- Replace non-matching assignments or choose a formation that accommodates them.
- Inspect the role and focus for each corrected player.
- Compare the with-ball and without-ball tactical views.
- In FC 26, test Versatile only when it is offered for that player’s selected role.
- Save the tactic, reopen it and verify that the choices remain.
- Play a short test and observe whether the movement occurs without the ball, with the ball or only after a tactic switch.
What not to assume
- Do not assume the formation diagram is a permanent location map. It is a base structure, especially for defending without the ball.
- Do not assume a role overrides position eligibility. A role cannot make a non-preferred slot equivalent to a preferred one.
- Do not assume all custom tactics share instructions. They can share the lineup while using different formations, roles and settings.
- Do not assume FC 25 and FC 26 use identical menus. FC 26 changed role flexibility, so follow the labels and options in your installed version.
- Do not assume every visual switch is a confirmed bug. Establish whether the change is explained by the active tactic, preferred position or role behavior first.
Do you need to buy anything to fix the formation?
No. Correcting the position, role, focus and active tactic is an in-game configuration task. A new copy of the game, a coaching service or another product is not required to test these fixes. The relevant options depend on the FC edition and platform you already use.

When a compromise is reasonable
Sometimes the squad has no natural replacement for a position. In that case, an out-of-position assignment can be a deliberate short-term compromise, particularly in FC 26 where EA says the negative impact has been greatly reduced. Make the decision consciously: identify the duty that matters most, choose the available role that preserves it, and monitor the with-ball and without-ball shapes rather than expecting perfect role behavior.
For a long-term setup, however, a player in a preferred position with a suitable role gives you more predictable movement and clearer transitions. That is the practical standard to use when comparing two otherwise similar lineups.
The fastest reliable fix
When a player seems misplaced, do not immediately rebuild the formation. Open the active tactic, verify the preferred position, inspect role and focus, and compare both tactical views. If the slot is wrong, change the player or formation. If only the attacking movement is unexpected, change the role or focus. If the issue follows a tactic switch, edit that specific tactic. This sequence separates a genuine position mismatch from normal role-based movement and resolves most cases without unnecessary changes to the rest of the squad.
