A Docker build that dies on a VPS is usually failing because the host ran out of memory, Docker’s data filesystem ran out of space or inodes, the daemon stopped, or BuildKit is using an unexpected builder or architecture. Capture the daemon and kernel evidence first; then apply the remedy that matches the measured failure instead of rewriting the Dockerfile blindly.

What a “crash” during docker build actually means

The visible error is often only the final symptom. A build can stop because the Docker daemon is down, the Linux kernel killed a build process, the filesystem holding Docker data is full, or a BuildKit worker or remote endpoint became unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Cannot connect to the Docker daemon” points to a stopped daemon, an unreachable remote endpoint, a bad Docker context, or a daemon that failed during startup.
  • OOMKilled, “out of memory,” or an abrupt death during a large RUN step indicates memory pressure. The kernel can kill the build container or the daemon itself.
  • “no space left on device” can mean that Docker’s data filesystem is full, inode capacity is exhausted, or BuildKit has accumulated layers and cache.
  • A hang, an EOF response, or a failure limited to ARM/AMD64 cross-builds often involves the selected buildx builder, its endpoint, or the extra memory required for emulation.
  • A daemon that will not restart after editing daemon.json may have a conflicting command-line flag, especially a duplicate hosts setting, or a kernel/module compatibility problem.

Do not start by deleting the Dockerfile or repeatedly retrying the build. Preserve the first failure message, the daemon log around that timestamp, and the host’s memory and filesystem readings.

Run this five-minute triage before changing anything

Run the commands as the same user and on the same VPS where the failure occurred. If your account does not have permission to inspect the daemon or kernel log, prefix the relevant command with sudo.

  1. Confirm the client can reach the daemon. Run docker info. Then check the service with sudo systemctl is-active docker and sudo systemctl status docker. A client can also be aimed at a remote host by DOCKER_HOST or a Docker context, so verify that you are testing the intended endpoint.
  2. Capture the daemon log. Run sudo journalctl -xu docker.service. On distributions that route service messages elsewhere, inspect /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages. Save the lines immediately before and after the build failure.
  3. Check memory and swap. Run free -h, swapon --show, and dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'oom|killed process'. Also search the system journal for OOM entries. A low “available” value, exhausted swap, or a kernel message naming a killed process is stronger evidence than a build client’s generic error.
  4. Check capacity and inodes. Run df -h, df -i, and docker system df. Identify the filesystem containing /var/lib/docker, or the custom Docker root configured on your host. Space can be available on the boot volume while the Docker data volume is full.
  5. Identify the active builder and target platform. Run docker buildx ls and docker buildx inspect --bootstrap. Record the builder name, driver, endpoint, platforms, and whether bootstrap succeeds. This distinguishes the default daemon-backed builder from a separately configured buildx worker.

These readings create a baseline. Take them again after a controlled retry only if the VPS has enough headroom to avoid turning a diagnostic attempt into another outage.

Read the daemon log, not just the last line printed by the CLI

Docker’s daemon log often explains why the client reports a generic disconnect or EOF. The documented Linux command is journalctl -xu docker.service; some distributions instead expose the same information through /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages.

Look for a timestamp matching the failed build and classify the message:

  • Startup or socket errors: the daemon never became ready, so fix the service or configuration before testing BuildKit.
  • Storage-driver, layer, or write errors: inspect the Docker root filesystem and inode count, not only the directory where your source code lives.
  • Worker disconnects or gRPC errors: inspect the buildx endpoint and network path if the build uses a non-default builder.
  • Process termination without a Docker explanation: correlate the timestamp with kernel OOM messages and system resource metrics.

If normal logging does not identify the failure, Docker supports enabling the debug key in /etc/docker/daemon.json. Make a backup, add or edit the JSON carefully, and reload or restart the daemon according to your distribution’s service procedure. Debug logging is more verbose, so remove or reduce it after collecting the evidence you need.

Fix memory exhaustion and kernel OOM kills

Docker documents that when containers attempt to use more memory than the system has available, an out-of-memory exception can occur and the kernel OOM killer may stop either a container or the Docker daemon. A compilation, package manager, language runtime, linker, or parallel asset pipeline can briefly require much more memory than an idle VPS appears to use.

Prove that memory caused the crash

Run free -h while the build is idle and, if possible, during the failing step. Check swapon --show to see whether swap exists and is active. Then inspect dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'oom|killed process' and the system journal. Kernel entries such as “Out of memory” or “Killed process” are the decisive indication that Linux, rather than BuildKit’s Dockerfile parser, terminated work.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not assume that a container-level memory limit is the whole story. The VPS can run out of host memory because of other services, the daemon, filesystem cache, or several build steps running concurrently.

Reduce the peak before buying capacity

  • Stop nonessential services for the build window, especially additional databases, application workers, and monitoring processes that compete for RAM.
  • Reduce build parallelism in the compiler, package manager, or asset tool used by the failing RUN step. Parallel jobs trade shorter elapsed time for a higher peak.
  • Separate a very large compilation or asset operation into smaller stages when the tool permits it. This can lower the maximum simultaneous working set.
  • Build only the required target instead of running several platform or variant builds at once.
  • Use an approved swap configuration when policy and storage performance allow it. Swap can absorb a short peak but is not a substitute for adequate RAM; sustained swapping can make a build appear hung and can still end in failure.

Retry only after confirming that the host has recovered. If the kernel continues to kill processes, move the build to a VPS with more RAM or to a separate builder rather than repeatedly exhausting the production host.

Fix “no space left on device” and inode exhaustion

Docker stores image layers, writable container layers, volumes, and BuildKit cache under its Docker root, commonly /var/lib/docker unless configured otherwise. A full filesystem, a full inode table, or a single rapidly growing layer can stop a build even when another mounted volume still has free gigabytes.

Measure the filesystem Docker actually uses

Use df -h for byte capacity and df -i for inodes. Locate the mount containing the Docker root and check whether a separate volume, overlay filesystem, or custom root directory is involved. Then run docker system df to see Docker’s view of images, containers, local volumes, and build cache.

Inode exhaustion is easy to miss: millions of small files can consume all inodes while df -h still shows free space. Package caches, dependency trees, generated source files, and failed intermediate layers are common contributors.

Prune only what you understand

Remove unused images, stopped containers, and build cache only after checking what a later deployment or rollback needs. A broad prune can remove artifacts that another workflow expects. Treat production images, named volumes, and any cache required for predictable release times as protected until you have verified a replacement.

BuildKit includes garbage collection that can be configured with cache age and disk thresholds. Docker documents the following defaults for 2026: reservedSpace is 10% of total disk or 10 GB, whichever is lower, and maxUsedSpace is 60% of total disk or 100 GB, whichever is lower. These are thresholds for BuildKit cache management, not a promise that every VPS will retain that amount of free space for your application. Adjust them to the actual size and role of the volume, then monitor the result.

If the same volume repeatedly fills after safe pruning and cache policy changes, expand the VPS disk or attach dedicated block storage. More storage addresses a capacity problem; it does not repair a daemon that is failing for another reason.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make BuildKit’s work smaller and more predictable

BuildKit can skip unused stages and context files, parallelize independent operations, and manage cache automatically. Those capabilities reduce wasted work, but they can also create a large short-lived cache or run independent memory-heavy operations at the same time on a small VPS.

Constrain the build context

Create a precise .dockerignore that excludes version-control metadata, local dependency directories, test artifacts, logs, editor files, and generated output that the image does not need. A smaller context reduces upload time, hashing work, and the chance that irrelevant files become part of a layer. Check the ignore patterns against the files your Dockerfile actually copies; excluding a required manifest will cause a different, immediate failure.

Use multi-stage boundaries deliberately

Keep compilers, headers, and temporary build tools in a build stage and copy only the runtime artifacts into the final stage. This lowers the final image size and limits the amount of material that must be retained for deployment. BuildKit can skip stages that are not needed by the selected target, so make stage names and target selection explicit when a Dockerfile supports several outputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Split high-water-mark operations

If one RUN instruction downloads dependencies, compiles source, generates assets, and packages everything at once, divide the work where practical. Separate steps do not magically reduce total bytes, but they can make the peak memory and temporary-file footprint visible and easier to tune. Remove package-manager caches in the same layer when they are not needed in the image.

Verify the builder, endpoint, and architecture

The default docker build builder uses the BuildKit library bundled with the Docker daemon. docker buildx build can instead use a configured alternative builder, potentially on another endpoint. A failure in the latter may leave the local daemon healthy while the selected worker is unavailable.

Run docker buildx ls to see available builders and their platforms. Use docker buildx inspect --bootstrap to start the selected worker and expose initialization errors. Confirm the endpoint is reachable, the builder is running, and the requested target platform is listed. Check the active Docker context and the DOCKER_HOST environment variable if the endpoint is not the VPS you expected.

Cross-architecture builds, such as producing ARM images on an AMD64 host or the reverse, may rely on emulation. Emulation needs additional memory and can be substantially slower. If a native builder is available for the target architecture, it usually avoids that extra pressure. Otherwise, schedule fewer concurrent targets, give the builder more RAM, or use a dedicated remote builder so emulation does not compete with production services.

Repair daemon configuration and kernel conflicts

Older or incompatible kernels and missing kernel modules can cause Docker to operate incorrectly. If the service fails immediately after a host update or Docker configuration change, inspect the daemon log and the system’s supported kernel features before changing the Dockerfile.

A frequent startup mistake is defining the same hosts directive in both /etc/docker/daemon.json and the dockerd systemd command line. Remove the duplicate according to the systemd configuration guidance for your distribution. Then run:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart docker
sudo systemctl status docker

Do not add another socket or host blindly to “make it work.” A conflicting listener can prevent the daemon from starting or expose an endpoint you did not intend to publish. After correcting the configuration, confirm with docker info before retrying the build.

Choose the remedy that matches the evidence

Remedy Memory headroom Docker-data disk Architecture Cache persistence Operational control Infrastructure cost
Reduce parallel work and prune unused cache May lower peaks modestly Recovers unused space No change Less cache retained Simple but recurring maintenance Low direct cost
Configure BuildKit garbage collection No direct increase Controls cache growth using age and thresholds No change Predictable limits, with more cache misses possible Requires monitoring and a tested policy Low direct cost
Resize VPS RAM or add approved swap Increases or cushions host capacity No change Still uses the same architecture Unchanged Usually straightforward on a managed host Higher recurring infrastructure cost
Expand the Docker-data volume No change Increases available bytes and possibly inodes No change More cache can persist Simple after filesystem expansion is verified Higher storage cost
Use a remote or dedicated builder Isolates build peaks from the VPS Moves layers and cache to the builder Can provide native target platforms Can retain a dedicated cache Adds endpoint, credentials, and CI configuration Separate builder or runner cost

Use the least disruptive option that removes the measured bottleneck. Capacity changes are appropriate when memory or disk pressure persists after cleanup; they are not substitutes for correcting a stopped daemon, a wrong endpoint, or a malformed configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery procedures for common failure paths

When the daemon is stopped

  1. Run sudo systemctl status docker and read the failure reason, not just the inactive state.
  2. Inspect sudo journalctl -xu docker.service for the first configuration, storage, or kernel error.
  3. Check whether DOCKER_HOST or the active context points somewhere else.
  4. Correct the named issue, reload systemd if its unit changed, and restart Docker.
  5. Verify with docker info before starting a new build.

When the kernel killed the build

  1. Preserve the OOM lines from dmesg or the journal.
  2. Stop nonessential services and reduce compiler or build-tool parallelism.
  3. Confirm swap policy and available disk before enabling or enlarging swap.
  4. Retry with one target and one build at a time.
  5. If OOM events recur, resize the host or move builds to an isolated runner.

When the filesystem is full

  1. Identify the mount containing the Docker root with df -h and df -i.
  2. Use docker system df and host-level inspection to identify unused layers, cache, containers, or runaway logs.
  3. Remove only artifacts confirmed to be disposable.
  4. Set BuildKit cache thresholds and monitor recurrence.
  5. Expand storage when normal build output legitimately exceeds the volume’s capacity.

When cross-building hangs or returns EOF

  1. Run docker buildx ls and select the intended builder explicitly.
  2. Run docker buildx inspect --bootstrap and resolve endpoint or worker errors.
  3. Confirm the target platform and whether emulation is involved.
  4. Reduce simultaneous targets and check the builder’s memory while it runs.
  5. Prefer a native or dedicated builder when emulation repeatedly exhausts the VPS.

Prevent the next VPS build outage

  • Keep a small diagnostic record for each build: commit, target platform, builder name, peak memory, free disk, inode use, and the daemon-log timestamp.
  • Alert on both filesystem percentage and inode percentage for the Docker data mount.
  • Reserve memory for application services instead of allocating every available megabyte to builds.
  • Review .dockerignore whenever the repository gains a generated directory or dependency cache.
  • Set and periodically review BuildKit garbage-collection thresholds based on the real volume size.
  • Use one documented builder endpoint in automation and fail clearly when the expected platform is unavailable.
  • Keep Docker daemon configuration under change control, including systemd overrides and daemon.json.
  • Schedule heavy, multi-platform releases on a dedicated or larger builder rather than on a production VPS with narrow headroom.

The deciding question is not “Which Dockerfile line should I rewrite?” It is “What does the host, daemon, or builder log prove happened?” Once memory, disk, endpoint, architecture, and configuration are checked in that order, most apparently random build crashes become a specific capacity or service problem with a targeted fix.
