A DayZ server that repeatedly restarts is usually being stopped by one of four things: an intentional scheduler or watchdog, a process crash, a startup or configuration failure, or an external service such as a hosting panel, service manager, or security product. The restart itself is only a symptom. Record the exact time and inspect the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash, and BattlEye logs from a known profiles folder; the exit context in those files tells you which class you are dealing with.
Classify the restart before changing anything
Do not begin by reinstalling mods or changing several launch options at once. First establish what the server process did at the recorded time. Watch the server window or service status during one restart and note whether the process exits, freezes, is relaunched immediately, or is reported as a scheduled action by the hosting panel.

The same symptom can have different causes. A mod error can crash the process, while a hosting panel can restart a healthy process on a timer. Classifying the event prevents you from treating every restart as a mod problem.
Put every diagnostic log in one known folder
Use an explicit profiles directory so you know exactly which files belong to the server instance you are testing. Bohemia Interactive’s server-configuration documentation defines -profiles as the folder containing server logs. For a diagnostic run, use the logging parameters below (case is shown as documented):

Bohemia’s Administration Logs documentation states: “To enable the logging, server must run with the launch parameter -adminlog.” The ADM file is written in the profiles folder.-netLogenables network logging, useful when a disconnect or network event coincides with the exit.-freezeCheckstops a server that has been frozen for more than five minutes and creates a dump file. Use it when diagnosing hangs, not as proof that every restart is a crash.
After each restart, before making another change, copy the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash, and BattlEye files to a dated evidence folder. Preserve the original timestamps. A later restart can overwrite or add files, and changing the configuration first can remove the evidence of the original failure.
Read the evidence in timestamp order
Start with the final lines immediately before the process exits, then compare the same minute in the other logs. The fact that a new process started is less useful than the reason the old process ended.

- Record the event. Write down the date, UTC offset, exact second if available, player activity, and whether the process window closed, froze, or was relaunched.
- Open the newest RPT. Look for the last initialization message, a fatal or runtime error, a missing file, a
SCRIPT (E)entry, or a clean shutdown message. - Check the ADM file. Confirm whether an administrator command, kick, shutdown, or other administrative action occurred at that time. The ADM file is expected only when
-adminLogis enabled and is stored in the profiles folder. - Check script and crash output. A script log or crash dump that begins at the same time narrows the cause to a script or native process failure; it does not by itself identify which mod or operating-system component is responsible.
- Check BattlEye files. Service-installation or startup errors point to BattlEye’s service, permissions, or security software rather than to ordinary gameplay configuration.
- Compare external records. Match the timestamp with the hosting panel’s task history, Windows service events, watchdog output, antivirus records, and firewall events.
A clean shutdown followed by an immediate relaunch usually indicates a scheduler, watchdog, or operator action. An abrupt final error, missing DLL, or dump file points toward a crash. An exit before mission loading points toward startup or configuration. An external event at the same second can override what the game log appears to suggest.
Fix startup and configuration failures first
If the server never reaches a loaded mission, stop testing gameplay changes. Treat the event as a startup/configuration failure until the server can complete a clean startup.

Validate serverDZ.cfg
- Undo the most recent edit and test the previous known-good file.
- Check quotation marks, braces, semicolons, commas, and value types. A single syntax error can terminate startup before a mission is loaded.
- Confirm that every path exists for the account that launches the service, not merely for your interactive desktop account.
- Check that the profile, configuration, mission, and storage locations are readable and writable by that account.
- Remove accidental duplicate or obsolete parameters while testing, then add required options back one at a time.
Keep the configuration file that produced the failure. The exact version, path, and line you changed are useful when comparing the RPT’s last startup message.
Repair missing runtime files
If the RPT reports a missing DLL or a Microsoft runtime error, install or repair the required Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime, then restart the service. The community troubleshooting index identifies missing Visual C++ runtime files as an immediate-crash cause. Repairing the runtime addresses that specific class of failure; it does not fix a malformed configuration or a mod script error.

Verify that the service is using the launch command you think it is using. Old parameters in a Steam shortcut, provider panel, batch file, or service definition can point to a different profile directory or load an obsolete mod. The official DayZ troubleshooting FAQ recommends removing launch options while troubleshooting. Rebuild the command from a minimal, known-good baseline, then add one required option at a time.
Determine whether a mod is causing the loop
Mod diagnosis requires a controlled comparison. A SCRIPT (E) line in the script or RPT log indicates a script fault, but it does not prove that every restart is caused by a mod; the fault may be recoverable, or another component may terminate the process afterward.

- Copy the current
-modand-serverModentries and record their load order. - Remove the mods added or updated most recently. Do not delete their data while you are still collecting evidence.
- Start the server once with the cleanest practical configuration and observe whether it reaches a mission and remains running.
- If the clean test is stable, restore one mod entry at a time. Restart and record the result after each individual change.
- When a particular entry reproduces the failure, compare its version, dependencies, required keys, and configuration with the version that last worked.
- Keep the failing entry isolated until you can update, roll back, or obtain a compatible release. Do not reintroduce the entire mod list in one operation.
Use separate tests for client-facing -mod content and server-only -serverMod content. A server-only script can fail during initialization even when clients have not joined, while a client-facing mod may fail only when a mission or player action invokes it.
Check BattlEye service failures separately
BattlEye startup errors are a distinct branch of the diagnosis. BattlEye’s FAQ explains that the problem occurs when something on the system prevents installation or startup of the BE Service, which is required on BattlEye-enabled servers.
What to inspect
- Look for errors involving
BEService.exe,BEService_x64.exe, or the BattlEye service directory. - Check whether antivirus or endpoint protection quarantined, blocked, or sandboxed the service.
- Confirm that the account launching the DayZ server has permission to create and start the service.
- Review firewall rules and security logs at the same timestamp as the restart.
Recovery sequence
- Close the DayZ server and any related service process.
- Add appropriate exclusions or allow rules for the BattlEye executables and service directory in the security product you control.
- Delete the BattlEye service directory so it can be recreated, following BattlEye’s FAQ guidance. Do this only after confirming you are removing the intended BattlEye directory, not your DayZ storage or profile data.
- Start the server with the required permissions and watch for a fresh service-installation or startup message.
- If the service still fails, compare the security-product event, operating-system service event, and BattlEye log rather than repeatedly restarting the game process.
Allowing the service, recreating its directory, and retrying with suitable permissions addresses installation and startup blocks. It will not correct a separate serverDZ.cfg syntax error or a crashing mod.
Separate provider schedules from crashes
Managed panels and self-hosted processes expose different controls. A panel can intentionally stop and relaunch a healthy server, while a local service manager can do the same after a crash or failed health check.

Do not disable security controls broadly. Use a narrow, documented exclusion for the relevant executable or directory, test once, and remove the exception if it is not needed.
Verify files and protect persistence
Before deeper changes, use Steam’s file-verification function for the server installation and remove stale launch options. This rules out an incomplete or altered base installation without changing your mod-isolation evidence.
- Stop the server and make a dated backup of the persistence and profile data.
- In Steam, open the DayZ server’s properties, choose the installed-files section, and run the file-verification command.
- Recheck the launch command and remove options that are not part of your minimal diagnostic baseline.
- Start with explicit logging parameters and observe one complete startup.
- Restore custom settings only after the verified baseline remains stable.
The official DayZ troubleshooting FAQ recommends regular persistence backups and crash-dump reporting because crashes can risk a persistence wipe. A backup is a recovery measure, not evidence that the restart cause has been fixed; retain it before every destructive cleanup or mod migration.

Stop the matrix when one test produces a decisive error. Continuing to add changes after a reproducible failure makes the evidence harder to interpret.

Bohemia Interactive’s public-hive hosting rules state that “Restart server more than 5 times per day” is prohibited, and that automatic restart settings in a GSP control panel may not be set below or above 12 hours. Those figures are from the documented 2018 public-hive hosting context, not a universal rule for every private, modded, or current hosting arrangement. Confirm the applicable ruleset and your provider’s terms before changing a schedule.
If a panel is restarting the server more often than intended, capture its task history and ask the provider to explain the health-check or schedule. Do not attempt to satisfy a policy limit by hiding a crash with an aggressive watchdog; first eliminate the underlying failure.
What to send when you need help
A useful support report lets another administrator correlate one event without guessing. Include:
- The exact restart time and time zone.
- Whether the process closed, froze, or was relaunched.
- The complete launch command with passwords and sensitive identifiers removed.
- The explicit profiles path.
- The newest RPT, ADM, script, crash, and BattlEye files from that event.
- The active
serverDZ.cfgand ordered-mod/-serverModlist. - Any provider-panel, watchdog, operating-system, antivirus, or firewall event at the same timestamp.
- What changed immediately before the first restart and which one-change tests have already passed or failed.
Redact credentials, tokens, player-identifying information, and private infrastructure details. Keep the original files privately so a redacted copy can be checked against the source if a timestamp or line appears ambiguous.
