A computer can report less usable RAM than the amount physically installed because those figures describe different things. Firmware may reserve address space for devices, an integrated GPU may share system memory, or the operating system may be unable to address all installed memory because of its architecture or edition. A lower usable figure alone does not prove that a memory module has failed.
First compare the amount detected by the computer’s firmware with the installed, reserved and usable figures reported by the operating system. That comparison identifies whether the difference begins at the hardware-detection stage or after the operating system loads.
Installed, firmware-visible and usable RAM are different measurements
The number printed on a memory module or shown on an invoice is the installed capacity. It is not necessarily the amount available for ordinary applications. A platform passes through several stages before programs can use memory.

A portion shown as hardware reserved is unavailable to normal applications for as long as it remains reserved. The size is not governed by one universal percentage; it varies with the computer’s hardware, firmware and configuration.

Why hardware and firmware reserve part of memory
Device address mapping
Hardware devices need address ranges so the processor can communicate with them. On systems using the traditional 4-GB address boundary, devices can occupy part of the address space below that boundary. Installed RAM that would otherwise appear in the same range may therefore be hidden from an operating system that cannot remap it.
Microsoft’s documentation explains that 64-bit Windows can use memory remapped above the 4-GB mark, while x86 (32-bit) client Windows cannot access physical memory addresses above 4 GB. The exact ceiling also depends on the Windows edition and release, so “64-bit” by itself does not guarantee that every installed gigabyte is usable.
BIOS or UEFI reservations
Firmware can reserve memory for platform functions and devices before Windows or another operating system begins. A Microsoft support response about hardware-reserved memory identifies BIOS reservations as one possible cause and notes that available settings differ by motherboard. A setting that exists on one model may be absent, named differently or ineffective on another.

Some firmware exposes a memory-remapping option. If the manufacturer documents such an option for your model, enabling the supported setting can allow a 64-bit operating system to use memory that was previously hidden by device mappings. Do not change unrelated firmware controls based on a generic online menu path; use the exact computer or motherboard manual.
Integrated graphics can share system RAM
An integrated graphics processor generally has no separate bank of video memory. Intel’s support documentation states: “The integrated Intel® processor graphics hardware doesn’t use a separate memory bank for graphics/video.” Instead, graphics memory is coordinated with system RAM and the operating system.
That sharing can appear in two different ways:
- Fixed firmware allocation: Some BIOS or UEFI implementations reserve a specified UMA or graphics aperture amount. That reserved portion can reduce the memory immediately available to applications.
- Dynamic allocation: The operating system and graphics driver can lend system memory to the GPU as workload requires and reclaim it when demand falls. A displayed maximum graphics-memory value is not necessarily a permanently unavailable block.
Intel’s guidance describes graphics-memory behavior as dependent on workload and system configuration. Check the OEM documentation to determine whether your machine uses a fixed preallocation, dynamic sharing, or both. Do not treat the maximum shown in a graphics panel as proof that the entire maximum is permanently missing from Windows.

Operating-system architecture and edition limits
Older 32-bit configurations are especially prone to an apparent gap. A 32-bit client operating system has a restricted physical address space; device mappings can consume part of the range, leaving less than the installed total available. A 64-bit edition can use remapped memory above the 4-GB boundary, subject to the limits of that particular Windows edition and release.

Confirm both architecture and edition rather than assuming that a computer advertised with a certain capacity is running an operating system capable of using it. If firmware reports the expected total but the OS reports substantially less, architecture and edition limits should be checked before replacing hardware.
Virtual memory and a pagefile do not add physical RAM
Paging is a memory-management technique, not a way to convert storage into RAM. When physical memory is under pressure, Windows can copy inactive virtual-memory pages to a pagefile on disk and bring them back when needed. Archived Apple documentation describes the same conceptual distinction for disk-backed virtual memory.

A larger pagefile may help an operating system handle a workload that exceeds available physical RAM, but it cannot make firmware detect a missing module, overcome a 32-bit address limit or turn hardware-reserved memory into application memory. It also uses slower storage, so it should not be presented as an upgrade for insufficient RAM.
A diagnostic sequence that separates normal reservations from faults
- Record the figures. Write down the installed capacity, operating-system installed memory, usable memory and hardware-reserved amount. Also record the computer model, operating-system edition and release, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check firmware detection. Enter the BIOS/UEFI information screen or run the manufacturer’s pre-boot diagnostic. Note the total memory reported before the operating system loads.
- If firmware reports less than installed, check the physical configuration. Verify that the module type and capacity are supported for that model, that the modules are in the slots specified by the manual and that they are fully seated. A module can be present physically yet omitted from the firmware total because of incompatibility, a seating problem or a platform limit.
- If firmware reports the full total, check the operating-system architecture and edition. A 32-bit client installation or an edition-specific ceiling can prevent the OS from using all firmware-detected memory.
- Identify graphics sharing. Determine whether the computer uses an integrated GPU. Read the manufacturer’s documentation for any UMA, IGD aperture or graphics-memory reservation and whether that allocation is fixed or dynamically managed.
- Review only documented firmware options. If the manual describes memory remapping or a graphics allocation control, compare its current value with the supported configuration. Names, locations and effects vary by model; there is no universal menu sequence.
- Return modified settings to supported defaults. If the system has been overclocked, undervolted or had memory timings changed, restore the manufacturer’s defaults as a diagnostic step. Unstable frequency or voltage settings can produce detection and reservation anomalies.
Follow the device maker’s safety instructions before opening a case. Reseat modules or test one module at a time only if you are comfortable doing so and the manufacturer permits it.

Firmware and the operating system agree on a lower amount
This pattern usually points to a platform-level explanation: a supported hardware limit, an incompatible or poorly seated module, a firmware reservation, or a fixed integrated-graphics allocation. Concentrate on the computer or motherboard manual and the physical configuration rather than changing the pagefile.

Firmware sees the full amount, but the operating system does not
Start with architecture and edition limits, then inspect documented memory-remapping and graphics settings. A 64-bit installation may be able to use remapped memory that an x86 client installation cannot. An integrated GPU can also account for a reserved portion, especially when the firmware uses a fixed allocation.
The amount changes with workload
Changing available memory while graphics or other demanding applications run is consistent with dynamic shared memory. That behavior is different from a fixed hardware-reserved block and should be evaluated using the GPU and OEM documentation.
The discrepancy is extreme or survives supported checks
Do not declare a module defective solely from one operating-system number. If the firmware total is wrong, or the discrepancy persists after supported configuration checks and default settings are restored, contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer or use a qualified repair service. They can test modules, slots and firmware with model-specific diagnostics.
Settings and “fixes” to approach cautiously
- Memory remapping: Potentially relevant when a 64-bit operating system is hiding memory because devices occupy addresses below 4 GB. Use it only when the platform manual documents the option.
- UMA or integrated-graphics allocation: Reducing a fixed allocation may increase memory available to applications, but it can reduce graphics capability or be ignored by firmware that manages memory dynamically.
- Pagefile changes: Useful for managing commitment under memory pressure, but unrelated to the physical total shown by firmware and the OS.
- Third-party “optimizers” and registry edits: They cannot remove a hardware address-space limit and can make diagnosis harder. A supported firmware setting or verified hardware repair is the appropriate route.
What this means on Linux and other operating systems
The same hardware principles apply across operating systems: device mappings, firmware reservations, integrated graphics and address-width limits can reduce application-available memory. However, display terminology and accounting differ among Linux distributions, kernels and desktop environments. There is no single Linux label or calculation that can be assumed across every installation.
Use the distribution’s own documented memory and hardware tools, compare their result with firmware detection, and avoid interpreting a desktop monitor’s “available” figure as a universal definition of physically installed RAM.
Should you buy more RAM?
Not because of the discrepancy alone. An upgrade is relevant only when the computer supports additional or higher-capacity modules, or diagnostics establish that an existing module has failed. First determine where the difference begins and whether the missing amount is a documented reservation or operating-system limit. That process prevents buying memory that the platform cannot support or replacing a healthy module to solve an address-space problem.
