If an external Blu-ray drive keeps disappearing, first determine what has actually stopped working: the drive may have lost power, the computer may no longer detect it, a disc may not read, or a playback app may not support the disc. Those are different problems, so check the connection and operating-system device list before changing playback software or replacing the drive.
First identify what disappears
When asking, “Why does my computer keep disconnecting my external Blu-ray drive?” or “Why did my external Blu-ray drive disappear?”, start with these observations:
- Does the drive have power or show activity?
- Does it appear in the operating system’s device list, such as Device Manager in Windows?
- Does it appear in File Explorer or Finder?
- Does the problem happen with every disc or only one?
- Can it be made to reappear by reconnecting it?
Also note the computer and drive models, operating-system version, whether the drive is connected through a hub, and when the disconnection occurs. A playback application cannot make a drive reappear if the operating system does not detect it. Conversely, a drive listed by the system but unable to read one disc points to a different layer.

Check the cable, port, and power
- Disconnect and reconnect the drive. Check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that you are using the cable and power setup specified for that drive model.
- Connect it to another port on the computer. Bypass USB or Thunderbolt hubs for this test.
- If you must use a self-powered hub, check that its AC adapter is connected. A hub is not a universal fix; the direct connection is the better diagnostic test.
- Restart the computer if the drive remains undetected. ASUS’s BW-16D1X-U quick-start guide, for example, advises checking the USB connection and restarting for a detection failure; that guidance is specific to that model.
If a Mac reports a power problem
For a Mac alert such as “USB Devices Disabled” or a message that the device needs more power, Apple recommends reconnecting the device, trying another port, connecting it directly rather than through a hub, and checking the AC power connection for a self-powered hub. See Apple’s USB Devices Disabled guidance.

If you use an Apple silicon Mac laptop
Check whether macOS showed an accessory-approval prompt. Apple says choosing “Don’t Allow” prevents the Mac from recognizing the accessory or giving it access to data. The available controls depend on the Mac and macOS configuration; follow Apple’s current instructions for allowing accessories to connect.
Check whether Windows detects the drive
In Windows 10 or 11, open Device Manager and look for the optical drive and any warning symbol or device status code. Microsoft notes that an optical drive may be missing from File Explorer and may show a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager. Record the code before changing settings; Microsoft lists examples including 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41.

Microsoft says recognition problems can follow an operating-system upgrade or the installation or removal of disc-recording software. Its Windows optical-drive recognition guide covers checking relevant BIOS and chipset-driver settings, updating or reinstalling the device driver, and restarting. BIOS steps do not apply to every external USB drive, so use the instructions for your actual computer and drive. Microsoft cautions that its listed fixes may not resolve every case and that manufacturer support may be needed.
As Microsoft puts it, “There are various reasons why a CD or DVD drive is not detected.” That is why the device status and connection checks matter: a single generic “not detected” symptom does not establish one cause.

On a Mac, separate accessory recognition from disc mounting
First establish whether macOS recognizes the USB accessory; then check whether a disc mounts and whether the application can use it. Use Apple’s instructions for the specific Mac model and macOS version. Apple’s USB SuperDrive connection guidance can help with connection questions, but the SuperDrive is a CD/DVD drive, not a Blu-ray drive, and its instructions do not establish Blu-ray compatibility.
If the drive appears but the disc or app does not work
The drive is listed, but no disc appears
Try a known-good disc in a format the drive supports. Check that the disc is inserted in the correct orientation and inspect it for damage. Confirm the supported media types in the manual for the exact drive model. A disc that the drive cannot read is not evidence by itself that the USB connection has failed.

The drive and disc appear, but an application cannot open them
Check that the application supports that disc type and source, and review any playback or authoring requirements it specifies. Keep this troubleshooting separate from USB recognition: installing a player will not make an absent drive reappear.

Consider replacement only when those checks make a hardware fault plausible. Before buying, verify compatibility for the exact computer and drive setup: supported disc formats, interface and cable, host operating system, and power requirements. Playback software may be included or may be a separate requirement. A USB-C-to-USB adapter is relevant only if the connectors do not match and the drive maker supports that connection. The available support information does not establish a best replacement model.
