If your Comcast/Xfinity remote will not control the cable box, first check whether the box ignores all remote buttons or whether only the TV’s power, volume, mute, or input controls fail. Those are different problems: box commands depend on the remote being paired to the correct TV Box, while TV and audio controls require a separate setup.
First, identify what is not working
- Guide, channel, menu, and other box controls do nothing: Check the batteries and the remote’s pairing with the box.
- The box responds, but the TV will not power on or change volume: The remote may already be paired to the box. Set up the remote for the TV or audio device separately using Xfinity’s TV and audio programming instructions.
This distinction is the quickest way to narrow down why your Comcast remote will not work with your cable box—or why your Xfinity remote is not working with your TV Box as expected.
Check the batteries and status light
Press a button and watch the remote’s status light. Xfinity says that no LED flash, or five red flashes after a button press, can indicate very low batteries. Replace them and test the remote again. Battery type varies by model, so check the compartment or the documentation for your specific remote rather than relying on a generic battery-size recommendation. For supported models, you can also check battery level in the remote settings menu or by voice command. If the light behaves normally but the box still does not respond, check pairing next.

Pair the remote with the correct TV Box
A Voice Remote paired with one box does not automatically control another. Xfinity Support explains, “Once a remote is paired, it will only work with that one TV Box — until you factory reset it.” In a home with multiple boxes, confirm that you are using the remote paired with the box you want to control.
For eligible Voice Remotes used with X1, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex, Xfinity’s pairing instructions are to aim the remote at the box, press the microphone button, say “Program remote,” and follow the on-screen prompts. The exact prompts and eligibility depend on the remote and box. Use the instructions at Xfinity’s remote pairing and programming page.

If the box is new, activate it before trying to pair the remote. If pairing fails, confirm that the remote model and box family are supported together before repeating the setup.
Use the reset instructions for your exact remote model
Do not assume that one reset button combination works on every Comcast/Xfinity remote. Xfinity lists different procedures for models including XR11, XR15, XR16, and XR100. Find the model on the remote, then follow the matching steps in Xfinity’s official reset and pairing instructions.

A factory reset clears the remote-to-box connection. After resetting, pair the remote with the intended box again; otherwise, the box may continue to ignore it.
Check remote and box compatibility
Remote instructions are not universal across Xfinity equipment. Xfinity says its Voice Remote works with X1 models except RNG150 and with Flex devices. Its current FAQ also notes a limitation involving the XRA Large Button Voice Remote and Xumo Stream Box. Voice features and TV/audio controls have separate compatibility requirements, and legacy TV Boxes use a different programming flow.

Before resetting or replacing a remote, identify both the remote model and the box family—X1, Flex, Xumo, or legacy—and check the current compatibility and setup information on Xfinity’s remote support page and Xfinity’s remote FAQ. A procedure for an X1 Voice Remote may not apply to another box or remote.
Restart an X1 box if pairing still fails
If you see the XRE-09017 pairing error, Xfinity recommends trying pairing again, checking the batteries, and restarting the X1 TV Box if needed. A restart can also help when an X1 box itself is not behaving as expected. Follow the on-screen restart option or Xfinity’s instructions at X1 TV Box restart guidance. Wait for the restart or system refresh to finish; do not unplug the box during the process.

Use Web Remote as a temporary control option
If you use X1 or Flex and need to operate the box while troubleshooting, Xfinity Web Remote provides browser-based control and supports accessibility features. It does not work with Xumo Stream Box and does not control TV power, volume, mute, or input, so it cannot replace TV/audio programming or repair a physical remote. Replace the remote only after checking setup
If batteries, correct-box pairing, model-specific reset steps, compatibility, and an applicable box restart do not resolve the problem, Xfinity documents exchanging a broken remote at a retail store or requesting one through Xfinity Assistant. Shipped accessory kits may have shipping and handling fees. Check the replacement’s compatibility with your exact box and remote model, then pair it before testing.
