If your Android crypto alert bot works while open but misses events after you lock the phone, the alert rule may be fine: Android can defer background work or restrict network access, and an exchange can throttle or disconnect a client independently. Trace the event from its data source to the notification before changing the logic, then decide whether the phone can tolerate delayed checks or detection needs to run elsewhere.

Where can an alert fail?

Treat the alert as a chain of separate boundaries: source data arrives, the bot parses it, the rule evaluates, the app requests a notification, and Android displays it. A failure at any boundary can look like “the network stopped working,” but each points to a different fix.

Add timestamped logs at each boundary, including the event or request identifier where practical. Compare the last successful stage with the first missing one. If the rule evaluates but no notification appears, investigate notification handling rather than exchange connectivity. If source data stops arriving only when the activity is not visible, inspect Android’s background execution and network behavior before rewriting parsing or alert rules.

Why does Android change behavior when the phone sleeps?

An app running in the foreground does not get an equivalent promise of execution or connectivity in the background. Android’s background-task restrictions and idle modes can affect when work runs and whether network access is available. Doze and App Standby are especially relevant when the device is idle; their effects depend on device state and system policy. See Android’s background-task restrictions and Doze and App Standby guidance.

That makes an always-open socket on the phone a fragile foundation for alerts expected to arrive while the device sleeps. A connection that works during active use can be interrupted by process lifecycle changes, connectivity transitions, or exchange-side limits. Android also advises against relying on manifest connectivity broadcasts to start background work; an active process can instead observe network availability and capabilities with ConnectivityManager network callbacks. Those callbacks help diagnose changes while the process is alive, but they do not keep that process running.

Which alert design fits your freshness requirement?

Choose based on how quickly an alert must be detected, whether the phone must stay active, and what recovery behavior you can support. A delay-tolerant refresh and a time-sensitive market alert are different workloads.

Design Best fit Primary trade-off
REST polling from the phone Occasional checks when the app is active or delayed results are acceptable Background work may be deferred, and endpoint request limits apply.
WebSocket from the phone A live session while the user keeps the app active Reconnect handling is necessary; Android background lifecycle and service restrictions mean an always-on phone process should not be assumed.
Periodic WorkManager check Eventual refresh, retry, or reconciliation Periodic work has a 15-minute minimum interval and is inexact; it is not a real-time polling clock.
Server-side monitoring with mobile push Detection should continue while the phone sleeps Requires a backend or provider and push setup; push delivery does not guarantee deterministic end-to-end latency.

Android describes WorkManager periodic work as having “a minimum interval of 15 minutes.” That is a floor for the requested interval, not a promise that work will run exactly every 15 minutes; battery optimization and other system conditions can delay it. See the PeriodicWorkRequest API reference and Android’s background data-transfer options.

If detection must continue while the phone is asleep, moving exchange monitoring to a backend and sending a mobile push is a reasonable architecture. It separates exchange detection from the phone’s background lifecycle, but does not eliminate provider, exchange, or push-delivery latency. FCM normal-priority messages may be delayed during Doze. High priority is intended for time-sensitive, user-visible outcomes and provides limited processing and network time; it should not be used to disguise silent background sync as urgent delivery. See Firebase’s Android message-priority guidance.

How do you isolate the failing layer?

  1. Log the full alert path

Record a timestamp when source data arrives, when it is parsed, when the rule is evaluated, when a notification is requested, and when it is shown. This distinguishes missing market data from rule, app, or notification failures.

  2. Compare foreground and background runs

Repeat the same alert condition with the app visible and after the device has been idle or locked. If only the background run fails, inspect Android task design and device power state first; the platform documents restrictions that can affect execution and connectivity.

  4. Match the scheduler to the required delay

Use WorkManager for work that can be deferred and retried, such as eventual refresh or recovery checks. Do not use periodic work when the requirement is minute-by-minute or immediate event detection: its documented minimum is 15 minutes and its schedule is inexact.

  5. Check Android release, target SDK, and service configuration

Android 12 and later restrict starting foreground services from the background. Android 14 and later require applicable foreground-service types and permissions. On Android 15, apps targeting API 35 or higher face a cumulative six-hour-per-24-hour limit for dataSync foreground-service time; that budget is shared across the app’s dataSync services and resets when the user brings the app to the foreground. Verify the applicable release guidance: foreground service overview, background start restrictions, version changes, and foreground-service timeouts.

A foreground service is not a way to hide indefinite background work: Android says to use one only when the task is noticeable to the user, including when they are not directly interacting with the app, and it must have a visible notification. Starting one is also subject to release-specific restrictions.

  6. Inspect exchange responses and connection recovery

For REST calls, record HTTP status, error payloads, any rate-limit information returned, and retry timing. For WebSockets, record disconnects, close information when available, reconnect attempts, and time between attempts. A 429 or repeated disconnect is an exchange/API-layer signal, not evidence that the alert rule is wrong.

Limits differ by product and endpoint. Binance’s documentation, for example, describes endpoint and IP rate limits, 429 handling and retry expectations, and WebSocket connection or message constraints. Those rules are a vendor-specific example, not a universal CEX or DEX standard; consult the documentation for the exact API and endpoint in use: Spot REST API information, general API information, developer introduction, and Spot WebSocket API documentation.

  7. For sleeping-phone alerts, test the complete push path

If monitoring moves off-device, measure and log exchange detection time separately from push-send and device-receipt time. Test with the phone idle as well as active, and confirm the user-visible notification behavior. A backend can avoid relying on a sleeping phone to maintain the exchange connection, but it cannot make push delivery instantaneous.

What changes for DEX monitoring?

The Android diagnosis is the same whether the event originates from a centralized exchange or a decentralized protocol: data collection, parsing, rule evaluation, and notification are separate failure points. The exchange-specific API guidance above uses Binance only as an example. DEX monitoring depends on the chain, event semantics, RPC or indexing provider, and that provider’s quotas and reconnect behavior; those details cannot be generalized without knowing the chosen network and provider. Apply the same logging and recovery approach, but check the exact provider and protocol documentation before setting polling intervals, retry policy, or event-finality assumptions.
