AirPods beeps usually have a practical explanation: a low earbud battery, a sound from a compatible charging case, or a locating sound started in Find My. First work out whether the sound comes from an earbud or the case, then check battery status and Find My before changing settings or assuming something is broken.
Identify where the beep comes from
Listen for whether the sound comes from the left or right earbud, or from the charging case. Note when it happens: while wearing the AirPods, when charging begins, or after someone used Find My. Those clues narrow the possibilities, but a beep alone does not identify a fault.
- Earbud: Check its battery level first; Apple says a low-battery tone can sound in one or both AirPods.
- Case: Some compatible cases make a sound when charging starts or when the case battery is low.
- Repeated locating sound: Check whether Find My is playing a sound to help locate the AirPods.
Check the earbud and case batteries
On a paired iPhone or iPad, open the case or remove the AirPods and check their battery status in the device’s AirPods or Bluetooth settings. Apple also describes checking battery status on Mac and using the case status light; the available indicators and controls depend on the model.
Apple says a tone sounds in one or both AirPods when their charge is low: once at 10 percent and again just before they turn off. If the earbuds are low, place them in the case and charge the case. The connector and wireless-charging options vary by case, so identify your case before choosing a cable or charger. See Apple’s AirPods charging guidance.

Check whether Find My is playing the sound
Find My can deliberately make nearby AirPods play a series of beeps. On an iPhone, open Find My, tap Devices, select the AirPods, and check the available controls. If Play Sound is active, use the app’s controls to stop or manage playback. This is a locating action, not by itself evidence of a hardware problem. Apple describes the feature in Find your lost AirPods with Find My.
If Find My shows Offline or No location found, the AirPods may be out of range or need charge, and a sound may not be playable. What you can locate or make sound depends on the model, account setup, and connection state. Apple’s AirPods user guide lists case-sound playback for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3; availability can vary.

Decide whether a case sound is expected
Apple lists AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 (ANC), and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case as models whose cases can make a sound when charging begins or when the case battery is low. If the noise comes from one of these cases at the start of charging, it may be normal behavior. For supported models, the case sound can be turned off in AirPods settings. Check the controls for your exact model; this case setting does not turn off the earbuds’ separate low-battery warning. Details are in Apple’s charging guidance.
If the beep happens during setup or connection trouble
A setup-incomplete alert can appear when pairing fails or only partly succeeds, but Apple does not say that every beep signals a pairing issue. If the noise coincides with a setup alert, follow Apple’s model-appropriate checks for software version, Find My and Bluetooth setup, then close the case briefly and reopen it to try completing pairing. What to do if the beep is still unexplained
- Confirm whether the sound comes from an earbud or the case, and when it occurs.
- Check both earbuds’ and the case’s battery status.
- Check Find My for active sound playback and the AirPods’ connection or location status.
- If the sound comes from a compatible case during charging, check that model’s case-sound setting.
- If one AirPod is also not working properly, follow Apple’s left- or right-AirPod troubleshooting guidance.
- If none of these checks accounts for a persistent or irregular sound, identify the AirPods and case model and contact Apple Support for model-specific help.
Apple’s published guidance explains these common sounds but does not provide a complete beep-code table or diagnose every unusual tone. Without a model-specific explanation, do not assume the cause is a defective battery, moisture, or another hardware failure.
