-Xmx3G is a request for a Java heap maximum, not a guarantee that the entire Minecraft process can reserve or use exactly 3 GB. The request fails when the server is running a 32-bit Java process, a control panel or container imposes a smaller limit, or the machine cannot spare enough memory for the heap, operating system, other programs and Java’s native memory. Find the ceiling first, then lower the heap, raise the host limit, install 64-bit Java or add compatible physical RAM.

What -Xmx3G actually means

Java starts a Minecraft server with two heap settings. -Xms is the initial heap size; -Xmx is the largest heap Java may grow to. A typical dedicated-server command is:

java -Xms3G -Xmx3G -jar paper.jar --nogui

Matching values reserve a fixed-size heap, which many administrators prefer for predictable behavior. They do not, however, make the whole process a 3 GB process. Java also needs native memory for class metadata, thread stacks, garbage collection, JIT-compiled code and buffers. The operating system and every other running program need memory too.

Paper’s documentation shows the same pattern with 4 GB values:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui

Replace those numbers only after checking the machine and the server’s actual memory ceiling. A host that allows exactly 3 GB can terminate a server configured with -Xmx3G, because the process normally uses slightly more than the heap maximum.

The four ceilings that can block a 3 GB heap

Ceiling What it limits Typical symptom Practical fix
Java process architecture The address space available to the JVM, especially with 32-bit Java Java cannot reserve the requested object heap even when the computer appears to have free RAM Install a compatible 64-bit Java runtime and point the startup script to it
Virtual memory Address space and commit capacity available to the process Startup fails while reserving the heap Close competing programs, correct the Java executable, and check host limits
Physical memory RAM available after the operating system and other processes take their share Slow startup, swapping, or an operating-system out-of-memory kill Reduce -Xmx or add compatible RAM
Panel or container quota A hard limit imposed by hosting software, Docker, a virtual machine or a control panel The process is killed without a normal Java crash, often near a specific memory figure Raise the quota, leave more headroom, or ask the provider to change it

These limits are independent. A 64-bit JVM cannot bypass a container quota, and a large hosting quota cannot make a 32-bit JVM address an unlimited heap.

Step 1: Confirm which program you are configuring

A Minecraft Launcher JVM argument changes the game client launched by that installation. It does not automatically change a separately started Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge or vanilla server. Dedicated servers are normally launched by a batch file, shell script or hosting-panel startup command.

  1. Open the script or panel startup command that actually starts the server.
  2. Look for the Java command followed by the server JAR, such as -jar paper.jar.
  3. Put -Xms3G -Xmx3G before -jar, not in a client-only launcher profile.
  4. Save the file, stop any existing server process and start it from that same script or panel.

If the command contains a full path such as C:Program FilesJava...java.exe, that path determines which Java installation is being used. Changing another Java installation will have no effect until the server command points to it.

Step 2: Verify that the server uses 64-bit Java

Run the same Java executable used by the server and inspect its version output:

java -version

On a system with several Java installations, first identify the executable selected by the shell. On Windows, where java lists matching paths. On Linux and macOS, which java shows the selected path. Then run that exact executable with -version. The output should identify a 64-bit VM; wording varies by Java distribution.

A 32-bit process has a much smaller address space. Minecraft Help states that 32-bit operating systems have 4 GB of RAM as the maximum, and the usable heap can be lower because the operating system and native components also require address space. Oracle’s Java guidance likewise treats the process data model—32-bit or 64-bit—as a fundamental heap limit.

If the result is 32-bit

  1. Install a 64-bit Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft server version.
  2. Change the batch file, shell script or panel command to invoke that 64-bit executable explicitly.
  3. Run the executable with -version again and confirm the architecture.
  4. Retry with a conservative heap, such as -Xms2G -Xmx2G, before returning to 3 GB.

Installing 64-bit Java does not add physical RAM. It only removes the 32-bit process-address limitation; the machine and host quota must still provide enough headroom.

Step 3: Check for a panel, container or virtual-machine limit

Managed hosts and self-hosted containers can enforce memory independently of the number in your startup command. A panel may display a 3 GB allocation while allowing less after its own overhead, or it may terminate a process as soon as total usage crosses the quota. Containers commonly enforce a hard limit that Java cannot see as ordinary free system memory.

Signs that the host limit is the ceiling

  • The server starts with a smaller heap but dies when -Xmx3G is restored.
  • The process disappears without a normal Java exception or crash report.
  • A panel records an out-of-memory event at nearly the same usage every time.
  • The host’s advertised memory equals the heap value, leaving no allowance for native JVM and panel overhead.

Paper specifically warns that Java may use a little more than -Xmx. Therefore a quota set exactly to 3 GB is unsafe for -Xmx3G. Leave measurable headroom above the heap or raise the quota. On managed hosting, only the provider can increase or remove that limit.

Linux host check

When Linux kills a process for system-level memory pressure, a kernel message may be available. Run:

dmesg -T | grep -i killed

Permission restrictions, distributions and container isolation can affect what this command returns. Also inspect the panel’s event log and the service manager log when available.

Step 4: Account for the machine’s total physical RAM

Do not assign all installed RAM to Java. Oracle advises that a single Java application’s heap should never equal all physical memory because the operating system, other processes and additional JVM operations need RAM. Minecraft Help gives a practical general rule for 64-bit systems: no more than half of physical RAM should normally be allocated to the game.

Installed physical RAM Conservative starting point for one server Why the remainder matters
4 GB Below 2 GB, depending on the operating system and other services The OS and background services can consume most of the remaining memory
8 GB About 3–4 GB only when the machine is otherwise lightly loaded Desktop applications, backups, voice chat and native JVM memory still need room
16 GB 3–6 GB is often easier to accommodate, subject to workload Multiple servers or modded instances may require a separate capacity plan

The table is a planning guide, not a promise of performance. The half-of-RAM recommendation is a general maximum, not a requirement to allocate exactly half. A small machine running a desktop, database and backup jobs may need a much smaller heap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check real-time pressure

  • On Windows, use Task Manager’s memory view while the server and normal background programs are running.
  • On Linux, use a system monitor such as free or the distribution’s resource viewer.
  • Watch for swapping or paging. A server that technically starts can still become unusably slow when the OS moves memory to disk.

If the machine cannot keep the operating system responsive with a 3 GB heap, reduce both heap flags or add compatible RAM. A hardware upgrade requires checking the motherboard’s memory type, capacity limit, slot availability and operating-system support; a generic “16GB DDR4 RAM kit” is not universal.

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Step 5: Set heap values that fit the available ceiling

For a fixed-size heap, use matching values:

java -Xms3G -Xmx3G -jar paper.jar --nogui

If startup fails, lower both values together and test the smallest change that starts reliably:

java -Xms2G -Xmx2G -jar paper.jar --nogui

Paper recommends reducing -Xmx by roughly 1–2 GB as an initial response to an out-of-memory kill, then testing again. Apply the same reduction to -Xms when you are using matching values. Do not keep lowering the heap indefinitely: if the server needs more memory for its world, players or mods, the durable fix is a higher host quota or more physical RAM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why matching values are optional

-Xms controls the starting heap, while -Xmx controls the ceiling. They can differ, allowing Java to grow the heap as needed. Matching them can make memory behavior more predictable, but it does not remove the need for native-memory and operating-system headroom.

Read the exact failure mode

“Could not reserve enough space for object heap”

This is a reservation failure before normal server operation. Investigate Java architecture, available virtual and physical memory, competing processes and host quotas. A 64-bit installation alone will not solve a panel limit or a machine that is already out of memory.

Process killed with no normal crash log

An operating-system, container or panel out-of-memory kill is likely. Check the host event log and, on Linux where available, the kernel output from dmesg -T | grep -i killed. Raise the limit or reduce the heap while preserving headroom for the rest of the system.

Server starts but reports high RAM use

High reported memory is not automatically a fault. Java may retain heap for garbage-collection efficiency, and the process can use slightly more than -Xmx. Treat it as a problem when it is accompanied by out-of-memory crashes, severe garbage-collection pauses, swapping or an unresponsive system.

Only the Minecraft client changed

If the server’s memory behavior is unchanged after editing launcher JVM arguments, you edited the wrong process. Return to the server’s batch file, shell script or panel startup command and verify the Java path and flags there.

Choose the fix that matches the ceiling

Where the limit is Reversible action When a larger change is necessary Headroom requirement
32-bit Java Switch the server to a compatible 64-bit runtime Install a supported 64-bit operating system if the current OS is 32-bit Still reserve memory for the OS and native JVM use
Panel or container quota Lower -Xms and -Xmx or adjust the quota Ask the host to raise the limit or move to a plan with a larger configurable limit Quota must exceed heap plus process overhead
Insufficient physical RAM Close other programs and lower the heap Add compatible memory or use a separate server machine Keep the OS out of swap and maintain normal responsiveness
Wrong startup file Edit the command that launches the dedicated server Replace an inherited panel template or script that overwrites your flags Verify the effective command after every panel restart

Flags and panel settings are reversible. Hardware upgrades require compatibility checks and a purchase, but they are the only fix when the machine lacks enough physical capacity for the workload.

Paper, Spigot, vanilla and modded servers

The memory flags belong to Java, so the basic syntax is similar across server types. The file name, wrapper script and argument conventions can differ. Paper’s documented form places the heap flags before -jar and starts the server with --nogui. A modded loader may use a generated argument file or a different startup script, while a hosting panel may construct the command from a template.

Before changing values, identify:

  • the exact JAR or loader being launched;
  • the script or panel template that owns the command;
  • the Java executable selected by that command;
  • any container or virtual-machine memory limit;
  • other services sharing the same physical host.

Do not copy a client allocation setting into a dedicated-server panel or assume that a flag in an unused script is effective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse the Java client with a dedicated server

Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 raised the default client allocation from 2 GB to 4 GB. That launcher change applies to the game client’s default profile. It does not redefine the heap used by a separately launched dedicated server, whose allocation remains controlled by its own Java command, panel or container.

Conversely, increasing a server’s -Xmx does not give a player’s client more memory. Diagnose each process separately and change the settings attached to the process that is actually failing.

A reliable troubleshooting sequence

  1. Record the effective command. Confirm that the server starts with the intended JAR and that -Xms and -Xmx appear before -jar.
  2. Confirm Java architecture. Run the exact executable with -version and verify a 64-bit VM.
  3. Inspect the host quota. Check panel, container, virtual-machine and service-manager limits. Treat a quota equal to -Xmx as insufficient headroom.
  4. Measure physical pressure. Include the operating system, desktop, databases, backups, other servers and native Java memory in the calculation.
  5. Test a smaller pair of values. Reduce -Xms and -Xmx by 1–2 GB when an out-of-memory kill occurs, then retest.
  6. Classify the result. A reservation error, silent kill and successful start with high usage point to different ceilings.
  7. Apply the durable fix. Raise the quota, move to 64-bit Java, add compatible RAM or redesign which services share the machine.

Prevent the same problem after a successful start

  • Keep a copy of the working startup command before changing flags.
  • Document which Java executable the server uses, especially on machines with multiple versions.
  • Leave operating-system and native-JVM headroom instead of setting the heap equal to installed RAM.
  • Watch for swapping, repeated out-of-memory kills and unusually long garbage-collection pauses, not just the headline RAM number.
  • After a hosting-panel change, verify that the panel did not overwrite the script or silently apply a different quota.
  • When adding mods, players or worlds, reassess total memory rather than assuming the old heap remains sufficient.

The correct result is not necessarily a process that displays exactly 3 GB. It is a server whose heap, native JVM memory, operating system and other workloads all fit within the real Java, host and hardware limits without crashes or destructive swapping.
