XRP market cap is a valuation calculation, not a statement of how much XRP could be sold immediately for cash. The figure multiplies a reference XRP price by an estimated circulating supply. That estimate may exclude XRP in ledger escrow or certain strategic holdings, while XRP kept outside exchange wallets may still be transferable. Understanding those distinctions prevents market-cap numbers from being mistaken for available liquidity, invested dollars, or guaranteed sale proceeds.
What XRP market capitalization actually measures
CoinMarketCap defines cryptoasset market capitalization as reference price multiplied by circulating supply: Market cap = price × circulating supply. The price is generally the latest marginal price at which trades occurred across the venues included by the data provider. Circulating supply is an estimate of the units considered to be in the market and in public hands.
That calculation creates a standardized way to compare assets, but it does not simulate every holder selling. It does not include the depth of XRP order books, the number of buyers at each price, bid-ask spreads, settlement limits, or the price impact of a large order. A market cap can therefore rise because the marginal trading price rose, even though only a small fraction of XRP changed hands at that price.
The supply input also depends on methodology. CoinMarketCap says its circulating-supply estimate can omit locked, insider, treasury, strategic, or otherwise restricted balances. Another data provider may classify an address differently. A reported XRP market cap is therefore meaningful only with the provider, timestamp, price reference, and supply definition attached.

Market cap, fully diluted value, and liquidity are different metrics

Why a large market cap is not a cash-out quote
Suppose a market tracker displays a large XRP market cap. The calculation uses the price of the next marginal trade for every unit in the circulating-supply estimate. If holders attempted to sell a substantial share at once, buy orders near that price could be consumed quickly. Sellers would then encounter lower bids, producing slippage. The aggregate proceeds could be far below the displayed market cap, even if the supply estimate were perfectly accurate.
Market cap also is not a ledger of money invested in XRP. People acquired XRP at different prices, some received it through distributions or transfers, and some may have lost access or chosen never to sell. The figure does not identify the historical dollars paid for each token or the cash that could be withdrawn at the quoted valuation.
Liquidity analysis requires separate evidence: order-book depth across venues, trading volume, spreads, settlement arrangements, concentration of holdings, and restrictions on particular balances. A market-cap page normally supplies none of those details.

Escrowed XRP is genuinely unavailable until its conditions are met
XRPL escrow is a protocol feature that locks XRP until a specified time or condition. The XRP Ledger documentation states that escrowed funds cannot be used or destroyed before the escrow conditions are satisfied. This is different from a holder simply choosing to keep XRP in a private wallet.
In a 2017 explanation, Ripple said it placed 55 billion XRP, or 55% of the possible supply, into a series of escrows to make supply more predictable. The percentage and amount belong to that 2017 statement; they should not be presented as a current balance without a current ledger or filing reference.
A release ceiling is not a sales figure
Ripple’s Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report separated XRP available in wallets from XRP subject to on-ledger escrow. It said Ripple could not access escrowed XRP until the applicable monthly release. A monthly release amount is a maximum that becomes eligible under the escrow schedule, not proof that the same amount was sold, transferred to exchanges, or added to public float.

The report also said its existing reporting format would be sunset beginning in Q2 2025. Do not assume that the Q1 2025 categories or publication cadence continued unchanged after that point. For any later analysis, use the specific filing, ledger record, or company disclosure available for the relevant date.
Off-exchange XRP may still be liquid
“Off-exchange” describes where XRP is held, not whether the protocol prevents movement. XRP in a self-custody wallet can generally be transferred or sent to an exchange without waiting for an escrow date. An institutional custodian, payment company, or unidentified address may likewise be able to move funds even when those funds are absent from exchange-wallet estimates.
That does not mean every off-exchange token will be sold. Owners can hold for the long term, use XRP for settlement, face legal or contractual restrictions, or lack the operational ability to trade. The important point is that an address outside an exchange is not automatically locked or illiquid.

A 2025 SEC-filed registration disclosure also noted that some XRP transactions occur off blockchain and therefore do not appear on the XRP Ledger. On-chain wallet counting cannot prove the complete economic ownership or transfer history when activity is recorded through off-chain systems. Treat ledger observations as one evidence source rather than a complete liquidity census.
Circulating supply is a provider-defined estimate
CoinMarketCap describes circulating supply as the best approximation of assets circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands. Its methodology reviews project information and blockchain data and can exclude balances considered locked, strategic, insider-held, or otherwise unavailable to public markets. Technical unlock status alone does not force a balance into the circulating category.

They may disagree about which addresses belong to the issuer, how escrow is treated, whether a strategic allocation is public, or how newly released tokens are classified. Always record the provider and timestamp beside a supply number.

Classify each balance on two separate axes

Dated XRP figures and how to read them
Several public disclosures illustrate why date and attribution matter. They are not a single, synchronized measurement of today’s immediately executable supply.

Ranges and estimates in regulatory filings are disclosures for a particular reporting context. They should be quoted with their date and source, not blended with a current tracker’s supply number as though all observations were taken at the same moment.
How to analyze XRP market cap without confusing the categories
- Write down the valuation metric. State whether you are discussing circulating market cap, a total-supply valuation, fully diluted value, or an exchange-balance estimate.
- Capture the provider and timestamp. Save the quoted XRP price and circulating supply at the same time. Record the provider’s methodology version when available.
- Separate locked from merely off-exchange. Check XRPL escrow records for protocol locks. Treat self-custody, custodial, and company wallets as different categories rather than assigning all of them the label “unavailable.”
- Attach dates to company and regulatory figures. A 2017 escrow statement, a Q1 2025 company report, and balances stated as of May 2026 cannot be treated as one current inventory.
- Check concentration and venue depth. Review large-holder concentration, spreads, order-book depth, and volume across the venues relevant to your geography. These determine execution conditions, not the market-cap formula.
- Consider off-chain limitations. Remember that the SEC-filed disclosure says some XRP transactions occur off blockchain. On-chain transfers alone cannot establish the complete supply available to economic owners.
- Model scenarios instead of promising proceeds. Use several sale sizes and price-impact assumptions. Label the result as a scenario, not as the amount represented by market cap.
Common claims that need correction
- “The market cap is the money invested in XRP.” Correction: it is a price multiplied by an estimated supply, not a historical investment ledger.
- “All XRP outside exchanges is locked.” Correction: off-exchange location does not impose a protocol lock; many wallets can transfer XRP.
- “Every monthly escrow release is sold.” Correction: release eligibility is not evidence of a sale, exchange deposit, or permanent addition to public float.
- “The top-10-wallet percentage proves those tokens are controlled by one seller.” Correction: an address-concentration estimate does not establish beneficial ownership, intent, or execution capacity.
- “One tracker’s circulating supply is the protocol’s official number.” Correction: circulating supply is a methodology-based estimate, and providers can classify balances differently.
- “Market cap tells us how much XRP can be liquidated at the displayed price.” Correction: liquidation depends on bids, depth, spreads, trading volume, transfer constraints, and seller behavior.
What a careful XRP market-cap statement looks like
A precise report might say: “At the stated timestamp, provider X calculated XRP’s circulating market cap by multiplying its reference price by its estimated circulating supply. That estimate may exclude escrowed or strategic balances under the provider’s methodology. XRP held away from exchanges is not necessarily locked, and market cap does not measure executable sale proceeds.” This wording identifies the calculation while keeping supply classification and liquidity limits visible.
If you cite a public figure, include the source’s identity and date: Ripple’s 2017 escrow explanation for the 55-billion figure, Ripple’s Q1 2025 report for its wallet-versus-escrow categories, or the relevant SEC-filed disclosure for dated circulation, concentration, escrow, and operational-wallet estimates. Do not convert any of those disclosures into a claim about current, immediate sell-side liquidity without new evidence.
Bottom line
XRP market cap is useful as a comparable valuation estimate, but it is not a liquidation quote. Escrowed XRP is unavailable until its ledger conditions are met; off-exchange XRP may remain transferable; and circulating supply is a provider’s approximation shaped by classification choices. Read the number with its metric, supply methodology, source, and timestamp, then analyze market depth and restrictions separately before drawing conclusions about how much XRP could actually trade.
