Xiaomi puts app recommendations and promotional messages in some system apps and interfaces because advertising helps subsidize free apps and services. Turning off Personalized ad recommendations changes how ads are targeted, but Xiaomi says it does not reduce the number shown in MIUI system apps. To reduce what you see, disable personalization, switch off recommendations inside each affected app, and mute promotional notifications when necessary.
Why ads appear across Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones
Xiaomi’s MIUI 13 Privacy White Paper says it provides app-recommendation ads in its apps and system interfaces so users can discover apps and so Xiaomi can offer many apps and services free of charge. The advertising may be supplied by Xiaomi or by third-party platforms, including Google and Facebook.
This is why an advertisement can appear outside a conventional browser: Xiaomi’s own apps, such as Security, File Manager, Themes or Mi Browser, can contain recommendation areas, banners or promotional notices. The exact inventory depends on the phone model, software generation, region and app version.
What information can be used for targeting
Xiaomi documents advertising identifiers and other data used for personalization, delivery or measurement. Its Mi Browser privacy policy lists information such as IP address, device model, system version, screen resolution, language settings, search keywords, internet-access records, device identifiers including OAID, and the installation-package information of target apps. Xiaomi’s advertising-service documentation also describes app-usage and ad-interaction data being used to form user segments.
The MIUI 13 white paper, published by Xiaomi in 2022, lists a 90-day retention period for several advertising-data categories, including GAID, advertising data, app-usage data, device and system specifications, locale and region settings, and operator or network type. That period is a documented policy statement, not a guarantee that every advertising-related record on every current device follows the same schedule.

Why turning off personalized ads does not remove ads
Personalization and ad delivery are separate controls. Xiaomi’s support guidance says that when personalized ad recommendations are off, users still see the same quantity of ads in MIUI system apps. The difference is that ads from Xiaomi and third-party platforms are no longer selected according to personal preferences.
Therefore, the switch is primarily a targeting and profiling control. It can make ads less relevant, but it is not a universal ad blocker. Banners, recommendation cards and promotional notifications can remain visible after the switch is disabled.

1. Disable system-level ad personalization
Menu names differ between MIUI and HyperOS releases, models and regions. Try the path that matches your phone:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Passwords & security > Privacy > Ad services.
- Turn off Personalized ad recommendations.
On some newer devices, the route is Settings > Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock > Privacy > Ad services > Personalize ads. If neither route exists, use the Settings search field for ads, recommendations or Ad services.
2. Disable recommendations in the app showing the ad
System-level personalization does not override every app’s own recommendation setting. Open the affected Xiaomi app and inspect its settings for labels such as Receive recommendations, Show ads or Personalized recommendations.
For example, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 13 Pro instructions use the Security app: open Security, tap its settings icon, then turn off Receive recommendations. Other apps may use different wording or place the option in an About, privacy or advanced-settings page.

3. Mute promotional notifications
If an app continues to send advertising notifications, Android lets you disable that app’s notifications:
- Open Settings > Apps > Manage Apps.
- Select the app sending the promotion.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn off Show notifications.
This suppresses all notifications from that app, not only advertisements. Do it only when losing security alerts, file-transfer notices or other useful messages is acceptable.
4. Change Mi Browser’s separate controls
Mi Browser has its own privacy settings. For ad targeting, open Mi Browser > Settings > Privacy & security > Ad settings, then turn off personalized ads. To stop recommendation-based content, use Settings > Privacy & security > Personalized recommendations > Personalized content recommendations.
Older Mi Browser versions put these controls in different locations. If the labels do not match, search the browser’s settings for ad, recommendation or personalized.

Why a setting may be missing
Xiaomi documents different paths for different software generations. HyperOS and MIUI builds can use different labels, and regional software variants may expose different controls. An update can move a setting without changing the underlying privacy behavior. Check the app’s own settings and use Settings search rather than assuming a missing menu means the control has been removed.

There is no documented, model-independent Xiaomi switch that blocks every advertisement in every system app. The official guidance also does not establish a percentage reduction in ad volume after these changes. Results depend on which app is displaying the message and whether it uses an app-level recommendation or notification channel.
Practical troubleshooting checklist
- Identify where the message appears: a banner inside an app, a recommendation card, or a notification.
- Turn off system ad personalization, then check the displaying app’s own recommendation setting.
- For persistent alerts, disable that app’s notifications and confirm that losing all alerts is acceptable.
- Check Mi Browser separately; its controls do not govern other Xiaomi apps.
- After a software update or regional change, search Settings for “ads,” “recommendations” and “Ad services” and repeat the app-level checks.

Will disabling Personalized ad recommendations make my Xiaomi phone ad-free?
No. Xiaomi says the same quantity of ads can remain in MIUI system apps; the switch stops ads from being based on personal preferences.
