Xbox Game Bar is not a general-purpose desktop recorder. Microsoft’s documented workflow is to open the game or app you want to capture and press Win+Alt+R. In practice, Game Bar records a supported application or game, while the Windows desktop, File Explorer and some apps may not be eligible targets. That is why pressing the shortcut can appear to “zero in” on one program instead of recording everything visible on your monitor.
If you need the desktop or a selected region, use Windows 11 Snipping Tool’s recording mode or Clipchamp instead. If Game Bar fails even inside supported games and apps, check whether you are running a Windows N edition, whether the target is using a full-screen Vulkan or OpenGL mode, and whether Game Bar is enabled.
What Xbox Game Bar is designed to record
Microsoft’s support instructions begin with: “Go to the game or app you want to record.” You then start and stop a clip with Win+Alt+R. This wording describes an app-oriented capture workflow, not a command to record the entire Windows display.

The active window matters. If you launch Game Bar while a supported game or application has focus, the recording is associated with that target. The design does not provide a documented “record every window and the desktop” switch.
Why the desktop and File Explorer are common exclusions
A Microsoft Q&A community answer addresses the exact question, “How to make XBOX Game Bar record the whole screen?” It describes Game Bar as capturing one application window at a time and identifies the Windows desktop, File Explorer and certain apps such as Maps as targets it does not capture. Treat that statement as practical community guidance about the behavior users encounter, not as a published Microsoft engineering specification of the underlying capture technology.
Consequently, a shortcut that works in a game can do nothing useful when the desktop is active. This is generally a target limitation, not a damaged video file or a missing permission. There is no supported Game Bar setting in the cited documentation that converts it into a desktop recorder. The technical reason that particular windows are excluded is not established in Microsoft’s public guidance cited here, so explanations about a specific capture API or security mechanism would be speculation.

The same distinction explains why results can differ between programs. A conventional desktop application may be recordable while File Explorer is not; another app may be excluded even though it is visible and has focus. Seeing a window on the monitor does not, by itself, make that window an eligible Game Bar capture target.
Do not confuse a missing overlay with an ineligible target
Microsoft’s known-issues guidance separately discusses cases where the Game Bar overlay does not appear over some full-screen Vulkan or OpenGL games. Certain full-screen rendering paths can bypass involvement from the Desktop Window Manager, which affects whether the overlay is shown.
That is a different problem from trying to record the desktop or File Explorer. A missing overlay in one full-screen game does not prove that every app is unsupported, and the desktop-capture limitation does not explain every overlay failure. When diagnosing a game, first determine which symptom you have:

- Overlay appears and recording starts: the game is behaving as a supported target.
- Overlay is absent only in a particular full-screen rendering mode: investigate the Vulkan/OpenGL full-screen issue described by Microsoft.
- Desktop or File Explorer is active: use a desktop-capable recorder instead of trying to force Game Bar to capture it.
Choose a recorder based on what you need to capture

This choice is usually straightforward: use Game Bar for a game or app that it recognizes, and switch to Snipping Tool or Clipchamp when the desktop, File Explorer or a selected screen region is the subject.
How to record a supported app with Game Bar
- Check that Game Bar is enabled. Open Windows Settings and verify the Xbox Game Bar feature is available and enabled. The exact Settings labels can vary by Windows release, so use the installed Xbox Game Bar entry rather than assuming a control exists on every build.
- Open the game or app first. Give the intended target focus. Do not begin from the desktop if your goal is an app clip.
- Open the controls. Press
Win+G. If the overlay appears, confirm that the target is the window you intend to capture. - Set audio before recording. In the Game Bar audio controls, select All under Capturing audio when you want computer sounds included. Check the microphone state separately;
Win+Alt+Mtoggles it during a clip. - Start the clip. Press
Win+Alt+R. Continue working in the target app while the recording runs. - Stop the clip. Press
Win+Alt+Ragain. The resulting MP4 is placed inVideos\Captures. - Confirm the file. Open the Captures folder and play the MP4. If the file is present but silent, revisit the Capturing audio choice and microphone toggle before making another clip.
For a still image instead of video, press Win+Alt+Print Screen. Game Bar saves that screenshot as a PNG in the same Captures location.
How to record the desktop or a selected area on Windows 11
Use Snipping Tool for a selected region
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows 11 Start menu or search.
- Choose Record rather than the image-snipping modes.
- Select the portion of the screen you want to capture. This can be a desktop area or a region containing File Explorer.
- Start the recording and use Snipping Tool’s pause control if you need to temporarily stop without ending the clip.
- Stop the recording and save the resulting video using the controls shown by your installed version.
Snipping Tool’s documented video feature is tied to Windows 11. If Record is missing, confirm the Windows version and update status before assuming the feature is broken.

Use Clipchamp when its screen recorder is available
Microsoft also lists Clipchamp as a screen-recording option. Open Clipchamp and select its screen-recording workflow, then follow the current prompts for the screen or window and audio choices. Because those controls can vary with the installed version and account configuration, verify the preview before recording a long session.

Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. Microsoft says some Xbox functionality, including Game Bar and Game DVR, may not work on Windows N until the Media Feature Pack is installed.

- Find and install Media Feature Pack.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open a supported game or app and test
Win+GandWin+Alt+Ragain.
This package restores media components needed by affected Windows N features; it does not turn Game Bar into a desktop recorder. If the desktop was excluded before installation, continue using Snipping Tool or Clipchamp for desktop capture after the restart.

Troubleshoot the symptom you actually have
Game Bar records games but not the desktop
That result is consistent with Game Bar’s app-oriented design and the practical exclusions described in Microsoft Q&A guidance. Do not spend time reinstalling Game Bar to obtain a capability it does not document. Use Snipping Tool on Windows 11 or Clipchamp for the desktop.
The overlay does not appear in one full-screen game
Check whether the game is using a full-screen Vulkan or OpenGL path covered by Microsoft’s known-issues guidance. Test the game’s available display modes and compare behavior in a windowed or different rendering mode. Keep this investigation separate from desktop recording: an overlay problem in a game is not evidence that Game Bar should record File Explorer.
Nothing records in any supported app
- Confirm that the target is a game or app rather than the desktop or File Explorer.
- Verify that Game Bar is enabled and that
Win+Gopens its controls. - Check the Windows edition. On Windows N, install Media Feature Pack through Optional features and restart.
- Try a second supported app to determine whether the problem is target-specific.
- Check the Captures folder for the MP4 and review Capturing audio settings if the video has no sound.
The video is saved but has no computer sound
Open Game Bar’s audio controls before the next clip and select All under Capturing audio, as Microsoft’s accessibility instructions specify for including computer sounds. Toggle the microphone separately if narration is required. Do not assume that Snipping Tool or Clipchamp use the same audio controls; verify their current settings in the app.
What the limitation means in practice
Game Bar is a convenient shortcut for app and game clips, with a predictable MP4 destination and built-in microphone and system-audio controls. It is the wrong tool when the subject is the Windows desktop, File Explorer or another excluded app. In those cases, the reliable fix is to change recorders, not to search for an undocumented Game Bar switch.
The only edition-specific repair in the cited Microsoft guidance is for Windows N installations missing media components. Installing Media Feature Pack can restore Game Bar functionality there, but it does not alter the product’s capture scope. Likewise, resolving a full-screen Vulkan or OpenGL overlay issue may make Game Bar visible in a particular game without making it capable of recording the desktop.
