Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Most WordPress compromises start around WordPress core, not in an unavoidable defect in the core software. An unpatched plugin or theme, stolen administrator credentials, an unsafe upload, excessive permissions, or a poorly isolated host usually gives an attacker the opening. Prevention is therefore an operating discipline: keep every component supported and current, require strong authentication, limit access, add layered detection and blocking, and maintain backups that you have actually restored.
Are WordPress websites easy to hack?
WordPress is not automatically insecure, but its size makes it a frequent target. A Wordfence security guide recorded WordPress on more than 34% of websites worldwide in 2024. That is a dated adoption statistic rather than a current market-share measurement, yet it explains the economics: a single exploit can be useful against a very large number of sites.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical risk usually comes from the software and operating practices surrounding core. Plugins and themes add code, database queries, upload handlers and administrative capabilities. Hosting configuration, passwords, user roles and backup procedures determine how far an intrusion can spread and how quickly you can recover. WordPress.org’s hardening guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Rarely is it attributed to the infrastructure, and most often attributed to the application itself (i.e., the environment you are responsible for).”
Wordfence’s report published in 2025 from 2024 vulnerability data attributed 96% of disclosed WordPress vulnerabilities in 2024 to plugins. Its monitoring also recorded more than 54 billion malicious requests blocked and more than 55 billion password attacks blocked during 2024. Those figures describe activity seen by that security network, not the probability that every individual site will be hacked, but they show why an unattended installation is continuously probed.

How a WordPress compromise usually happens
| Attack path | What the attacker exploits | Possible result |
|---|---|---|
| Vulnerable plugin or theme | A known flaw in an installed version, often after a patch and exploit details become public | Unauthorised administrator access, arbitrary file upload, code execution or database changes |
| Credential attack | Reused, short or exposed passwords; missing two-factor authentication | Account takeover and use of legitimate sessions to change the site |
| Injection | Unsafe handling of database input or browser-supplied data | SQL injection, cross-site scripting, altered content or stolen sessions |
| Insecure upload | Upload endpoints that fail to validate type, location or execution permissions | Web shells, malware files or persistent access |
| Privilege and hosting weakness | Overpowered user accounts, writable directories, exposed services or weak isolation on shared hosting | Larger blast radius after the first foothold and possible access to neighbouring sites |
| Missed detection | No useful logs, file monitoring, malware scanning or tested clean backup | Persistence for months and an unsafe or incomplete recovery |
The main reasons WordPress sites get hacked
Outdated or vulnerable plugins and themes
Extensions are the most common vulnerability source in the 2024 Wordfence data. Attackers can scan for a plugin name and version, compare it with public advisories, and send exploit requests at scale. A site can be compromised even when its owner never installed anything recently: an old extension remains reachable until it is updated or removed.
Updates are not risk-free, especially on a customised site, but leaving a known vulnerable component online is usually the greater risk. Test important updates on a staging copy when possible, keep a rollback plan, and remove plugins and themes that are disabled, unused, abandoned or no longer supported. Deactivation alone may leave vulnerable files available; deletion is safer when the component is not needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWeak, reused or stolen credentials
Attackers try passwords from previous breaches, phishing campaigns and automated dictionaries against the login endpoint. They also target hosting panels, database accounts, SSH, FTP, deployment systems and API keys; compromise of any one of these can lead to a WordPress takeover.
Use a long, unique password for every privileged account and store it in a password manager. WordPress.org’s brute-force guidance recommends enabling two-factor authentication for every administrator account; WordPress core does not include 2FA, so it must be provided by a suitable plugin or identity provider. Protect recovery email accounts with strong authentication too, or an attacker may simply reset the administrator password.
Brute-force and credential-stuffing attacks
A brute-force attack tries many guesses, while credential stuffing tests username-and-password pairs stolen elsewhere. Even a strong password can be exposed if an administrator reuses it on another service. Rate limiting, login protection at the edge or host, 2FA and alerts for unusual administrator logins reduce the chance that repeated attempts become a successful session.

SQL injection, cross-site scripting and authentication bypass
SQL injection occurs when untrusted input reaches a database query without safe parameter handling. Cross-site scripting (XSS) lets an attacker place script in a page that another visitor or administrator loads. Authentication-bypass flaws skip a permission check entirely. These bugs may exist in a plugin, theme or custom code rather than in WordPress core. Keep extensions patched, avoid unmaintained custom snippets, and treat security advisories as urgent when they affect a component that handles input or permissions.

Insecure file uploads
An upload feature should verify the file type and content, store files outside executable locations where practical, enforce size limits and prevent uploaded files from being interpreted as server-side code. A flaw in any of those controls can allow a web shell or another persistent file. Restrict write permissions, disable script execution in upload directories when your host supports it, and investigate unexpected files rather than deleting them blindly.
Abandoned, unofficial or “nulled” software
An extension with no active maintainer may never receive a fix. Unofficial or pirated packages can contain deliberate backdoors, altered update mechanisms or hidden administrator accounts. Download WordPress from WordPress.org and obtain plugins and themes from reputable maintainers whose release history, support and security response can be assessed. If you cannot identify who maintains a component or when it was last updated, replace it instead of building a security boundary around it.
Excessive privileges and dormant accounts
Every administrator account is a high-value target, and every extra capability increases the damage an account can do. Give editors, contractors and agencies only the capabilities required for their work. Remove dormant users, review accounts after a project ends, and avoid sharing one administrator login among several people. Check application passwords, API tokens and connected services as well as visible WordPress users.
Weak hosting isolation and configuration
On a shared server, poor isolation can expose neighbouring sites if one account is compromised. A broad writable directory, unnecessary services, an exposed control panel or weak file permissions increases the blast radius. Keep unrelated sites in separate accounts when possible, use HTTPS, disable services you do not need, restrict administrative access and ask the host how it isolates accounts and handles incident response.

Missing monitoring and untested backups
A compromise that is not detected can create multiple backdoors, new users, scheduled tasks and malicious outbound links. A backup that has never been restored may be incomplete, corrupted or already contain the attacker. Without logs and a known-clean recovery point, owners often overwrite evidence and restore the infection.
A prevention plan that works in practice
1. Build and maintain an inventory
Record the WordPress version, PHP version, operating system, active and inactive plugins and themes, hosting accounts, domains, administrator accounts, API keys and external services. Assign an owner and a review date to each item. The inventory makes it possible to identify an exposed component quickly when an advisory appears.
2. Patch the entire stack promptly
- Apply WordPress core security releases as soon as they are compatible with your site.
- Update plugins and themes from trusted sources; replace components that are unsupported or have a history of delayed fixes.
- Keep PHP and operating-system packages within versions that still receive security updates.
- Test critical changes on staging, then verify the production site, forms, payments and integrations after deployment.
- Remove unused plugins, themes and custom code rather than merely disabling them.
Subscribe to security advisories from the maintainers of components you actually use. Do not delay a fix simply because an exploit has not yet been observed on your site; public exploit details often lead to rapid scanning.
3. Make administrator authentication resistant to guessing
- Use unique, long passwords for WordPress, hosting, database, SSH, FTP, email and API accounts.
- Enable 2FA for every administrator and for the hosting control panel and identity provider.
- Limit login attempts or apply rate limiting at the edge or host, while allowing legitimate users a recovery path.
- Use named accounts instead of shared administrator credentials so actions can be attributed.
- Review login alerts and immediately revoke sessions, application passwords and tokens that are no longer needed.
4. Apply least privilege
Use the lowest WordPress role that permits a person’s job. Keep the number of administrators small, require approval for new privileged accounts and review the list on a schedule. Contractors should have time-limited access where possible. Remove a user before changing a generic shared password; otherwise an old session or token may remain valid.

| Layer | Primary job | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Edge WAF or reverse proxy | Block malicious requests before they reach the origin; absorb some automated traffic | Can it protect the real origin IP, provide useful logs and avoid blocking legitimate APIs or editors? |
| Host firewall and isolation | Restrict network access, services and neighbouring-account exposure | Are accounts isolated, administrative ports restricted and security events retained? |
| WordPress firewall and malware scanner | Inspect application requests, file changes and known malware patterns | Does it detect changes in core, plugins, themes, uploads and database content, and how are false positives handled? |
| Managed security response | Provide human investigation, cleanup and escalation when alerts fire | What is the response time, scope of cleanup, evidence handling and communication process? |
| Backups and restore system | Recover content and configuration after eradication | Are copies off-site, encrypted, versioned and protected from deletion by a compromised administrator? |
Monitor administrator logins, file changes, new users, plugin and theme changes, scheduled tasks, database edits and unusual outbound traffic. Alerts should go to a channel attackers cannot alter from the WordPress dashboard.
6. Harden files, transport and administration
- Serve the site and administration over HTTPS with a valid certificate.
- Set file and directory permissions so the web process cannot write everywhere.
- Protect configuration files and database credentials from direct download.
- Disable PHP execution in upload directories where your server supports it safely.
- Restrict SSH, FTP and control-panel access by network, VPN or 2FA where practical; prefer encrypted protocols.
- Disable unused services and remove sample files, debug output and development accounts from production.
7. Keep backups that survive an attack
Automate backups of both the database and files, store copies off-site, retain multiple restore points and encrypt sensitive data. Keep at least one copy that a compromised WordPress or hosting account cannot overwrite. Periodically restore to an isolated location and verify pages, media, users, settings and essential transactions. A backup is a recovery control only when you know which date is clean and can complete the restore within the time your business can tolerate.
Signs that a WordPress site may be compromised
- Unknown administrator accounts, changed roles or password-reset messages you did not request.
- New plugins, themes, files, scheduled tasks or database entries that no one can explain.
- Redirects, spam pages, browser warnings, altered search results or unexpected JavaScript.
- Unusual outbound email, traffic spikes, CPU usage or connections to unfamiliar destinations.
- Security scanner findings that return after deletion, indicating a hidden persistence mechanism.
- Users reporting that legitimate pages show different content depending on device, location or login status.
Do not assume a visible symptom is the whole incident. Attackers commonly create more than one account or backdoor and may hide code in the database, uploads, media metadata, scheduled tasks or a must-use plugin.

Act in a controlled order. Rushing to delete files or reinstalling over the top can destroy evidence while leaving the initial access path open.
1. Record what you know
Write down when the problem was first noticed, who saw it, affected URLs, error messages, suspicious users or files, recent deployments and any changes to plugins or themes. Preserve relevant web-server, firewall, hosting, WordPress and authentication logs. If the incident may involve personal or payment data, involve the person responsible for legal, privacy and breach-notification decisions immediately.

2. Contain access without destroying evidence
- Use a maintenance page or restrict the site at the edge if visitors could be exposed to malware or fraudulent content.
- Ask the host to isolate the account, preserve server logs and identify other accounts that may share the same environment.
- Prevent further logins by disabling compromised accounts or enforcing a controlled reset, while preserving a forensic copy of files and the database.
- Do not let an attacker continue to use an exposed payment, email or API integration; suspend or rotate those credentials as part of the containment plan.
3. Determine the initial foothold and persistence
Compare the current site with a known-good WordPress core, plugin and theme package. Review file modification times, administrator creation, login history, web-server requests, database changes, cron or scheduled tasks, must-use plugins, upload directories and configuration files. Scan files and the database, but treat a scanner as evidence rather than proof that the site is clean. Look for the vulnerable component, stolen credential, upload flaw or hosting weakness that allowed entry; otherwise the same attacker can return after cleanup.
4. Eradicate and patch
- Remove malicious users, files, database content, scheduled tasks and persistence mechanisms identified during the investigation.
- Replace WordPress core, plugins and themes with verified packages from trusted sources instead of editing suspicious files in place.
- Delete the vulnerable, abandoned or unofficial component if no safe update exists.
- Fix permissions, exposed services and configuration weaknesses that enabled the intrusion.
For a complex compromise, use an experienced incident-response or managed malware-cleanup service. Human review is especially important when the attacker had hosting, SSH, database or payment access.

5. Rotate every relevant credential
After removing persistence, change WordPress administrator passwords first, then hosting-panel, database, SSH, FTP, deployment, email, API, payment and third-party integration credentials. Revoke active sessions, application passwords, tokens and SSH keys. Rotate the credentials used by the site to connect to its database and mail service, and check that recovery email accounts are secure. Rotating passwords before closing the foothold can simply give the attacker the new credentials.
6. Restore only from a known-clean point
If eradication cannot be proven, rebuild from a verified clean backup or a fresh installation, then import only reviewed content and media. Do not restore an entire unknown backup over a compromised site. Reapply patches, least-privilege roles, HTTPS, monitoring and 2FA before reopening the site. Verify that the vulnerability which enabled the incident is gone.
7. Monitor the recovered site
Watch logins, file changes, new users, outbound traffic, resource use and scanner results more closely after recovery. Keep the incident timeline, indicators of compromise, affected data and corrective actions. If personal information or payment data may have been exposed, follow the breach-notification and incident-response obligations that apply to your jurisdiction and industry.
How to choose WordPress security tools or services
Compare capability and operating model rather than a badge or a plan label. Ask each provider:
- Where does protection run? An edge WAF can block traffic before it reaches the server; a host control can isolate the account; a WordPress plugin can inspect application behavior and files.
- What happens when it detects a problem? Distinguish blocking, alerting, malware scanning, manual cleanup, patching and full restore assistance.
- How fast is the response? Check staffed coverage, escalation, communication and whether a human investigates high-severity alerts.
- How are backups designed? Confirm off-site storage, retention, encryption, immutable or access-separated copies and a documented restore procedure.
- How are false positives handled? A firewall that blocks editors, webhooks or payment callbacks can create an outage; ask how exceptions are reviewed and rolled back.
- Will it fit the stack? Test compatibility with caching, a content-delivery network, ecommerce, membership, multilingual plugins, custom code and deployment workflows.
- What work remains for you? Every service still needs an owner for updates, access reviews, incident decisions and restore testing.
Bottom line
WordPress sites are hacked mainly because an exposed extension, weak credential, unsafe input or poorly controlled environment gives an attacker a practical path in. Keep the entire stack supported, enforce unique passwords and 2FA, limit privileges, isolate and harden hosting, place blocking and monitoring in layers, and maintain off-site backups that you regularly restore. When a compromise occurs, preserve evidence, contain the site, remove the initial foothold and persistence, rotate all credentials, rebuild from a known-clean source and monitor the result.
