WordPress comments usually become slow for four related reasons: a long thread produces a large HTML response and many database rows, WP_Comment_Query may retrieve more comments or metadata than the template needs, Gravatar avatars add remote image work, and reply scripts add browser processing. The reliable fix is to limit the first page of comments, audit the query, reduce avatar overhead, defer native comments below the fold when appropriate, and then measure database, cache, and hosting latency separately.
What happens when a visitor opens a post with comments
A long thread expands every layer of the request
For each displayed comment, WordPress may generate author information, dates, content, links, nesting markup, moderation data, and reply controls. A post with hundreds of comments can therefore send a much larger HTML document than the article itself. The browser must parse that markup, build a larger document tree, apply styles, run comment-related JavaScript, and lay out content that may be far below the fold.
The work also grows when each comment has replies. Nested threads require additional lookups and more complex markup, while reply links and scripts prepare the browser for interaction even when the reader has not reached the discussion.
Avatars create extra requests and downloads
WordPress uses Gravatars by default when displayed comment avatars are enabled. A long thread can consequently trigger many avatar lookups and image downloads. Those requests compete with the article’s own assets and can delay visual completion, especially on mobile connections or when the avatar service responds slowly.

Comment metadata and scripts add hidden cost
Comments often need metadata such as user identity, moderation state, or custom fields. WordPress core queues comment metadata for lazy loading and batches that work into a database or cache call, but custom code can still request unnecessary fields or defeat efficient batching. Reply scripts, styling, and third-party integrations add front-end work after the HTML arrives.
The query path may be doing more than the template needs
Core retrieves comments through WP_Comment_Query. Its arguments control the number of comments, paging, offsets, ordering, metadata behavior, and whether WordPress calculates the total number of matching rows. Theme code, plugins, and filters can alter those arguments. The comments_pre_query hook can even bypass the normal database query, so a cache or custom backend must return complete pagination information as well as comment objects.

- Paginate the discussion so the first response contains only a modest number of top-level comments.
- Inspect the effective
WP_Comment_Queryarguments and remove unnecessary rows, metadata, and count work. - Disable avatars that do not serve a clear purpose, or test a lighter local-avatar approach.
- Lazy-load native comments below the fold when the site’s theme and comment implementation support it.
- If the page is still slow, profile query time, object/page caching, and hosting response independently.
Change one layer at a time and record a before-and-after measurement. A faster score with a cold cache is not equivalent to a faster response for a returning visitor, so test both states.
1. Paginate comments instead of rendering the entire thread
Use the Discussion settings
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Discussion.
- Find the setting that breaks comments into pages and enable it.
- Choose a modest number of top-level comments per page. The right value depends on comment length, nesting, avatar use, and the site’s audience; start conservatively rather than reproducing an entire long thread.
- Choose whether the oldest or newest comments appear first. Newest-first suits support and news discussions; oldest-first can preserve a chronological conversation or tutorial feedback.
- Save the settings, then test a post with a genuinely large thread while logged out.
Pagination limits the initial HTML, comment query, metadata work, and browser layout. It also gives caches smaller, more repeatable responses. It does not make a single page faster if custom code still fetches every comment in the background, so verify the network and query behavior after enabling it.
Configure the block editor’s Comments block
The Comments block includes a Comments Pagination block by default. Its previous and next controls let visitors move between comment sections without loading the whole discussion in the first response. Check the block’s pagination controls in the Site Editor or post template and make sure the navigation is visible, keyboard reachable, and labelled clearly.

Keep pagination accessible and understandable
- Use visible text such as “Older comments” and “Newer comments,” not an icon with no accessible name.
- Keep focus on the pagination control after navigation, or provide a clear status message when a theme uses asynchronous loading.
- Do not remove the page context from the URL if readers need to share or return to a specific comment page.
- Check both newest-first and oldest-first modes with screen readers and keyboard navigation.
WordPress core performance work has specifically discouraged infinite comments-per-page interfaces and moved toward more modest fallback queries. Pagination is therefore a safer baseline than an endlessly growing “load more” control.

Check the arguments that determine database work
Inspect the query generated by the theme and plugins, not just the values in Discussion settings. Pay particular attention to:
| Argument or behavior | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
number |
It matches the number of comments actually rendered. | A high value increases rows, HTML, metadata, and browser work. |
paged and offset |
Paging is consistent and an offset is not accidentally skipping or duplicating sections. | Incorrect combinations can produce slow or confusing pagination. |
orderby and order |
The sort matches the reader’s selected order and is not overridden repeatedly by filters. | Sorting a larger result set costs more than sorting the page that is actually displayed. |
| Metadata arguments | Only metadata used by the template is requested. | Unneeded metadata creates additional database or cache work. |
no_found_rows |
Use it only when the interface does not need a total count or page count. | Skipping the count can save work, but it breaks accurate pagination if enabled blindly. |
| Custom filters | Review filters that alter limits, joins, status, or metadata. | A plugin can silently turn a small paged query into a large one. |
Preserve pagination when short-circuiting the query
The comments_pre_query hook allows a cache or custom comment provider to bypass the normal database query. If you use it, return the expected comment objects and preserve the values WordPress needs to paginate, including found_comments and max_num_pages. Returning only a list of comments can make navigation show the wrong number of pages or disappear entirely.
Look for accidental duplicate queries
A template may call the comment query once for the visible list and again for a count, schema block, sidebar, or custom widget. Query-monitoring tools in a staging environment can reveal duplicate calls, repeated metadata requests, and filters that run for every comment. Remove duplicate work or share the result only when doing so does not leak private or moderated comments.
Do not disable totals without checking the UI
no_found_rows can be useful for a “show the first page only” design, but a paginated interface needs a reliable total. If a developer sets it globally, the Comments Pagination block or a custom navigator may lose its page count. Scope the optimization to requests that genuinely do not display pagination.

3. Reduce avatar and reply-script overhead
Disable avatars when identity is not important
In Settings > Discussion, review the avatar display option and turn it off if the discussion does not benefit from profile images. This removes Gravatar lookups and image downloads from the comment path. It is especially useful for technical documentation, support archives, and high-volume posts where author identity is already shown as text.
Consider a local or lighter avatar strategy
If visual identity matters, compare a local, cached, or generated placeholder approach with remote Gravatars. A local strategy can reduce cross-origin requests and improve privacy, but it introduces storage, image resizing, cache invalidation, and moderation responsibilities. Test the complete lifecycle before switching: new commenter, changed avatar, missing image, high-density display, and cache purge.
| Avatar choice | Request profile | Identity and privacy | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravatars enabled | Remote lookup and image requests for displayed avatars. | Recognizable identity; visitors contact an external avatar service. | Little local storage work, but performance depends on the remote response. |
| Avatars disabled | No avatar image requests. | Text-only author identity. | Lowest operational overhead. |
| Local or lightweight avatars | Requests can stay on the site’s own origin and be cached. | Visual identity without the default remote lookup, depending on implementation. | Requires image handling, moderation, and cache management. |
Load reply behavior only where it is useful
Long threads can load reply scripts before a visitor reaches a reply link. Confirm that the theme or plugin is not enqueueing several copies of the same script, and avoid initializing interactive behavior for comments that are not yet visible. When comments are deferred, the reply control must still work after the new markup is inserted.
4. Lazy-load native comments below the fold
What a native comment lazy-loader does
The WordPress.org listing for Lazy Load for Comments describes loading rendered comments when the visitor scrolls or presses a button, fetching them through the WordPress REST API, and caching rendered comments per post. Its listing also states that crawlers can receive inline comments for SEO and that it supports classic and block themes. In 2026, the listing showed version 2.1.0, a minimum requirement of WordPress 6.0, testing through WordPress 7.1.2, and more than 2,000 active installations.

Install and verify compatibility
- Back up the site and test on staging.
- Open Plugins > Add New, search for Lazy Load for Comments, and confirm the author, version, requirements, and active-installation information shown in the directory.
- Activate it on staging and test a post with a long native comment thread in a classic theme and, if relevant, a block theme.
- Test loading by scrolling and by activating the button with a keyboard and screen reader.
- Inspect the REST request, returned markup, reply links, moderation state, pagination, and cached response.
- Repeat the test as a logged-out visitor with browser caching disabled and then with normal caching.
Know when lazy loading will not apply
A third-party comment system that replaces the native WordPress comment area has its own rendering and network behavior. The plugin listing specifically places systems such as Disqus and Jetpack Comments outside its scope. Do not install a native-comment lazy-loader expecting it to control a replacement system; profile that system’s scripts and settings instead.
Pagination versus lazy loading
| Decision factor | Pagination | Lazy loading |
|---|---|---|
| Initial HTML | Contains one bounded comment page. | Can contain little or no comment markup until interaction or scrolling. |
| SEO rendering | Comment pages are directly addressable and available in HTML. | Verify how crawlers receive comments; the documented native plugin can provide inline comments to crawlers. |
| Accessibility | Uses explicit previous/next navigation. | Requires an accessible load control, focus handling, and a useful status message. |
| Cacheability | Each page is a stable cacheable response. | Rendered-comment responses need their own cache rules and invalidation. |
| Theme compatibility | Supported by core and the Comments block when configured correctly. | Depends on integration with the specific classic or block theme. |
| Comment source | Works with native comments and can be adapted to other systems. | The cited native approach does not control replacement systems. |
Choose pagination when discoverability, simple caching, and direct navigation matter most. Choose lazy loading when the first view should contain almost no discussion and the comments are native and tested with the theme. Using both can be reasonable: paginate the loaded set and defer that first page until the reader requests it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Diagnose server-side latency after front-end changes
Separate database time from delivery time
A slow comment section can be caused by query execution, PHP rendering, cache misses, network transfer, or browser work. Measure each layer rather than assuming that reducing HTML fixed the server:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Browser network timing: record time to first byte, response size, download time, and requests made when comments appear.
- Database profiling: identify comment queries, counts, metadata calls, duplicate queries, and slow filters.
- Object-cache behavior: compare warm and cold cache requests and check whether comment metadata is being batched or repeatedly fetched.
- Page-cache behavior: verify whether paginated comment pages or REST responses are cached, bypassed for logged-in users, or invalidated too often.
- Hosting response: compare origin response time under the same cache state and traffic conditions.
Use real cache states
Run at least one cold-cache test, one warm-cache test, and one logged-in test if moderators see a different page. Record the URL, comment count, ordering, avatar setting, device, and connection type. Do not turn one laboratory result into a universal percentage: the official material does not establish a single speed gain for pagination, avatars, or lazy loading.
Check invalidation and freshness
When a new comment is posted, cached HTML and cached rendered-comment responses must be invalidated without flushing the entire site unnecessarily. Verify that approved, pending, and deleted comments do not appear in the wrong audience’s cache. A cache that serves stale moderation states is a correctness problem even if it is fast.

Common failure modes and recovery steps
Pagination is enabled but the page is still huge
- Inspect the rendered HTML for comments beyond the selected page.
- Check whether a widget, schema routine, or custom filter runs a second unpaged query.
- Confirm that the theme is using the configured Comments block or the intended comment template.
“Load more” works with a mouse but not a keyboard
- Use a real button with an accessible name, not a clickable span.
- Move focus to the newly inserted comments or announce the number loaded.
- Verify that reply links and moderation controls are reachable after insertion.
Comments disappear after enabling a lazy-loader
- Check JavaScript-console errors and the REST response status.
- Verify that the REST route is not blocked by a security rule, cache layer, or authentication requirement.
- Test the plugin’s native-comment requirement against the site’s actual comment system.
- Temporarily disable minification or script deferral to identify an ordering conflict, then re-enable optimizations one at a time.
Page counts are wrong
Review number, paged, and offset together. If a custom provider uses comments_pre_query, verify that it supplies found_comments and max_num_pages. Also check that moderation status and post ID filters are identical for the count and the displayed rows.
Avatar removal changes the layout unexpectedly
Reserve a consistent author area or update the comment CSS so text does not jump when an image is absent. Test long names, missing avatars, right-to-left text, and mobile widths before publishing the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical verification checklist
- Open a post with a large thread while logged out and record first-byte time, response size, and total requests.
- Enable comment pagination and verify the first response contains only the selected page.
- Check newest-first and oldest-first navigation, direct page links, focus behavior, and mobile layout.
- Inspect
WP_Comment_Queryarguments, duplicate queries, metadata requests, and count behavior. - Compare Gravatars enabled, disabled, and any local-avatar alternative using the same post and cache state.
- If using lazy loading, test scroll and button activation, REST responses, crawler-visible HTML, reply links, and cache invalidation.
- Profile database, object cache, page cache, and origin response separately before changing hosting.
- Retest after publishing a new comment, approving a pending comment, and deleting a comment.
The goal is not the smallest possible comment section; it is a predictable first view that preserves discussion access, accessibility, moderation correctness, and useful navigation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I paginate or lazy-load comments?
Use pagination for predictable URLs, simple caching, and direct access to comment pages. Use lazy loading when you want the initial view to contain little discussion and your site uses native comments with a tested theme integration. Both can be combined.
Are Gravatars the only reason comments are slow?
No. Gravatars add remote image lookups, but large HTML, comment queries, metadata, reply scripts, cache misses, and hosting response can each contribute. Measure those layers separately.
Will lazy-loading comments improve SEO?
It depends on implementation. The documented native lazy-loading plugin states that crawlers can receive inline comments, but you should verify the actual rendered HTML and test your theme rather than assume every asynchronous comment system is crawlable.
Is there a guaranteed percentage speed improvement?
No universal percentage is established. Record browser network timing, query profiles, response sizes, and warm and cold cache results for your own site.
The Bottom Line
Start with modest comment pagination, then audit the effective WP_Comment_Query. Remove unnecessary avatar and metadata work, defer native comments only after testing accessibility and compatibility, and profile database, cache, and hosting latency if the delay remains.
