Word’s “Read Mode” may mean a read-only access mode, a reading layout, or desktop Full Screen Reading. The fix depends on which Word app and control you mean: check whether you are using desktop Word or Word for the web, then check the document’s permissions. Some desktop views simply are not available in the browser.
First, identify which “Read Mode” you mean
In desktop Word, Viewing, Reviewing and Editing are document modes. Viewing is read-only; Editing and Reviewing are available only when you have the required permission. The mode selector is near Share, and its label reflects the current mode. Microsoft’s explanation of document modes describes the options and how permissions affect them.
Word for the web has Reading and Editing views. Desktop Full Screen Reading is a separate view, not the same thing as the web app’s Reading view. Microsoft lists Full Screen Reading, along with Outline, Draft and Web Layout, among the desktop views that are not available in Word for the web. You are in Reading view and want to edit
Select Edit Document > Edit, if that option is available. If it is absent or disabled, the document’s owner or your organization may not have granted editing access. Microsoft documents the web editing route.

You want desktop Full Screen Reading
That view is not provided in Word for the web. Use Open in Desktop to open the document in desktop Word and access features that the browser version does not support. Microsoft’s feature comparison lists the unavailable views.
If Editing or another mode is unavailable
A missing Editing choice is usually an access or restriction issue, not a problem with the read-focused layout. Ask the document owner to grant edit permission. An organization administrator, author restriction or document protection may also prevent changing modes locally. Microsoft advises opening the document in desktop Word when restrictions need to be changed. Read Microsoft’s guidance on enabling editing.

- If the document is shared with you, confirm that the link or sharing invitation grants editing rather than viewing.
- If it is a work or school document, ask the owner or organization administrator whether policy or protection settings limit editing.
- If a restriction must be changed, try opening the document in desktop Word; browser controls may not expose the necessary setting.
Check read-only settings and file compatibility
Always Open Read-Only affects how a document opens; it does not itself grant or remove the sharing permission needed to edit. Treat the opening preference and the document’s actual access rights as separate checks. Microsoft explains read-only behavior and settings.
File type and protection can also affect what Word for the web can do. Microsoft says the web app can display legacy .doc files, but behavior differs from .docx; some protected files must be opened in the desktop app. Check the exact format and protection state before considering a conversion.
