If your Windows taskbar stays visible after you turn on auto-hide, first check that the setting is enabled under the taskbar behaviors for your version of Windows. Then move the pointer away from the screen’s bottom edge and check whether an open app is asking for attention. Microsoft says hovering over or touching the bottom edge reveals a hidden taskbar; a flashing icon or badge can indicate activity that needs attention.
Confirm auto-hide is enabled in the right setting
In Windows 11, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and select Automatically hide the taskbar. Microsoft describes the option for desktop and tablet modes. If the labels or layout differ on your screen, check which Windows version you’re using and follow the matching instructions; Microsoft’s taskbar guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Move the pointer away from the screen edge
When auto-hide is active, hover over or touch the bottom edge of the screen to bring the taskbar back. If the pointer remains at that edge, move it away and give Windows a moment to hide the bar again. Microsoft documents this reveal behavior; the taskbar appearing when you approach the edge is expected, not by itself a sign that the setting failed.

Check for an app that needs attention
Look at the taskbar buttons for a flashing icon or a badge, and check open apps for an alert, notification, or dialog. Microsoft says badges can signal app activity or something that needs to happen, and an icon may flash when an app needs interaction. Those signs are useful clues, but Microsoft does not say they explain every auto-hide problem.
A Microsoft Q&A response reports that an open app’s notification can interfere with auto-hide and suggests closing apps to identify the one involved, then clearing or addressing its alert. Treat this as community troubleshooting advice, not a confirmed explanation for every PC. To test it, close open apps one at a time and see whether the taskbar begins hiding. If it still won’t hide, narrow down when it happens
If the setting is enabled and the pointer is away from the edge, note the circumstances before trying more invasive fixes. These details help describe and narrow the issue; they are not proven causes on their own:
- Whether the taskbar never hides or hides and then reappears.
- Whether it happens only with one particular app, or while that app is maximized or full-screen.
- Whether a second display is connected.
- Whether a taskbar icon is flashing or shows a badge.
- Your Windows version and whether the issue occurs in desktop mode, tablet mode, or both.
Start with the setting and app checks rather than registry edits or scripts that reset the Windows shell. A community answer has proposed such a reset, but it is not Microsoft’s official guidance and is a disproportionate first step for this symptom.
