In The Sims 4, a Sim that will not sleep may be unable to reach the bed, may be reacting to nearby audio, or may be affected by a specific game behavior or gameplay exception. Start by checking bed access and nearby TVs or radios; then match the symptom to the relevant event, Sim type, or update fix. These checks cover documented causes, but they cannot diagnose every save.
First, identify what is going wrong
“Not sleeping” can mean several different things: the Sleep interaction is missing, the Sim cannot get to the bed, sleep starts but ends early, or an exhausted Sim gets into bed and then collapses. The distinction matters because the documented causes and fixes are not interchangeable.
- Sleep will not start: check whether the bed is reachable.
- The Sim wakes repeatedly: inspect nearby TVs and radios.
- The Sim gets into bed but collapses: check whether the game has received the relevant update.
- The option is missing after a sleepover: treat it as a reported issue, not a confirmed general bug with a known fix.
Check whether the Sim can reach the bed
EA’s March 2023 patch notes say that when a Sim tries to sleep or nap in a bed they cannot reach, the game should tell the player that the Sim cannot get there. If that message appears, select a bed the Sim can access, move objects that may be obstructing the route, and try again. EA’s note confirms the access feedback but does not provide a complete list of objects or layouts that can block a route.

If your Sim keeps waking up, check nearby audio
EA’s May 2026 update notes say Sims woken by a nearby TV or radio will turn the device off and return to sleep. If a Sim wakes shortly after going to bed, check whether either device is playing nearby. The change addresses this specific interruption; it is not evidence that every repeated wake-up has the same cause.

Check for a version-specific sleep behavior
EA’s May 2026 Laundry List describes fixes for two specific sleep behaviors: exhausted Sims getting into bed but still collapsing, and romantic partners getting out of bed when both were instructed to sleep at the same time. It also adds a “Sleep and Cuddle” interaction for the Lovestruck case. If your Sim matches one of these symptoms, confirm that your installed game version includes the relevant changes. The available notes do not establish which build is installed on every platform or whether every player has received each change.
EA’s roadmap described planned work on sleeping behavior and autonomy from March through August 2026, but roadmap timing can vary. Consult the current The Sims 4 news and update notes and compare them with your installed build. If the exhausted-Sim collapse or paired-Sim problem still occurs on an updated game, record the steps that reproduce it and report it through EA support or the forums rather than assuming a universal workaround.

If Sleep disappeared after a sleepover
An EA Forums post reports a missing Sleep option after a sleepover party. That is a player-reported symptom, not proof of a general cause or an EA-confirmed remedy. You can try saving and reloading, and check for available updates as basic troubleshooting, but EA’s report does not establish those steps as a fix for this specific issue.

Check whether the Sim is a Murphy Bed ghost
There is a designed exception: ghosts who died by being crushed by a Murphy Bed cannot sleep in beds or sleeping bags. EA says these ghosts fill their Energy need by possessing other Sims, so switching to a normal bed will not solve this case.

Do not mistake a nap for full sleep
EA says the nap interaction is intended to give an Energy boost, not fill the need completely. If you want the Sim’s Energy need replenished, use the full Sleep interaction when it is available and the bed is reachable.
