First check whether the photo actually transferred. If the computer cannot see the phone or the destination folder has no photo, troubleshoot the connection, permissions, USB mode, or cloud access. If the file is already on the computer but will not display, check its format and whether your photo app supports it. These are separate problems, and fixing one will not necessarily fix the other.
Start by identifying which step failed
- No phone or photo appears: The transfer may not have started. Check that the phone is unlocked, approve any trust prompt, select Android’s file-transfer mode, and try a data-capable cable.
- The photo file is present but will not open: Check its extension and the app’s format support. HEIC or HEIF photos and HEVC videos may require compatible Windows extensions or conversion.
On Windows, use File Explorer to check the folder you chose for the import. If you cannot find the file, follow the connection steps below; if it is there, skip to the format section.
If your computer cannot see the phone or import photos
iPhone or iPad connected to a Windows PC
- Connect the device using a USB cable that supports data transfer, turn it on, and unlock it.
- If the device asks whether to trust the computer, choose Trust or Allow.
- Open Microsoft Photos, choose Import, and select the connected device. Microsoft’s phone-to-PC import instructions also direct users to iCloud for Windows when photos are in iCloud rather than on the phone.
Apple’s current Windows instructions say to install Apple Devices, connect and unlock the iPhone or iPad, approve the trust prompt if it appears, and then import using Microsoft Photos. If iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple advises downloading the original full-resolution versions to the device before importing to a PC. See Apple’s Windows transfer guidance.
Android phone connected to a Windows PC
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer with a cable that supports file transfer.
- On the phone, tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
- Under Use USB for, choose File Transfer, as described in Google’s Android transfer instructions.
If the phone still does not appear, try another data-capable cable, a different USB port, or another computer. Restarting the phone and computer and checking for Android updates are also among Google’s suggested troubleshooting steps. A cable that charges the phone may still lack data-transfer capability; changing cables can help a connection problem, but will not make an unsupported image format open.

If the photo is on the computer but will not open
Check the file extension and distinguish photos from videos
Look at the filename ending, such as .heic, .heif, or .hevc. HEIF/HEIC generally refers to still images, while HEVC refers to video encoding. A Windows message about HEVC may concern a video transferred alongside your photos; it does not by itself show that a still image is damaged.
Windows Photos may need additional extensions to open downloaded HEIF/HEIC images or HEVC video locally. Microsoft’s format guidance describes installing the required Windows extensions, reimporting or sharing media through a route that converts it, or using OneDrive viewing workflows. If you use OneDrive, Microsoft says HEIF/HEVC files can be viewed on its website in a browser; that preview does not mean a downloaded original will open in a local Windows app without the needed codec. See Microsoft’s OneDrive guidance for HEIF and HEVC files.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
Choose between keeping the original and making a compatible copy
- Install a compatible viewer or codec: This can let a local app read the existing file without converting it.
- Convert or reimport: This can produce a more widely supported copy, but conversion changes the format or encoding. The cited support guidance does not quantify possible changes to image quality or metadata, so keep the original until you have checked the converted copy.
- Use cloud access: This can help when the full-resolution original is stored online rather than on the phone, or when you prefer wireless access. It does not necessarily solve local codec support for downloaded files.
Apple says media imported over USB may be converted to JPEG for photos and H.264 for video. To avoid that conversion on an iPhone or iPad, its guidance gives the route Settings > Apps > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Keep Originals. Labels can vary by OS version, so use the labels shown on your device. On a Mac, Photos or Preview can export an HEIF image as JPEG or PNG; QuickTime can export HEVC video as H.264. See Apple’s file-format transfer and export guidance.

If iCloud Photos is enabled
The full-resolution original may be in iCloud rather than downloaded to the iPhone. If an import finds no local original, download it to the device first or access it through iCloud for Windows. Apple specifically recommends downloading the originals to the iPhone or iPad before importing to a PC; Microsoft also points users to iCloud for Windows for photos stored there. A cloud-only original can therefore look like a failed USB transfer even when the phone is connected correctly.

Prevent format trouble with future iPhone photos
For future captures, Apple’s Windows compatibility guidance recommends Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. New photos then use JPEG and videos use H.264, formats more broadly supported by Windows apps. This setting affects future camera captures; it does not convert HEIC files already copied to the computer. Some iOS devices may not offer this option, as noted in Apple’s guidance and Microsoft’s format notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If connection and format checks do not solve it
Update the operating system and the app you are using, then identify the file format from its extension or file information and try an app that supports it. Apple notes that older or specialized formats may not work in a given device, OS, or app; its general guidance is available at Apple Support. A damaged file is another possibility, but an app failing to open it is not enough on its own to establish that it is corrupt.
