Most failed Phone Hub connections come from using the wrong setup screen, different Google Accounts, outdated software, Bluetooth being disabled, or a stale previous pairing. Set up the phone from the Chromebook’s Phone Hub or Settings > Connected devices flow—not from Add Bluetooth device. Then verify compatibility, accounts, updates, internet access, and any school or work restrictions before resetting the pairing.
This guide separates a failed Phone Hub setup from an expected absence in the Chromebook’s Bluetooth accessory list, and then gives a recovery sequence for each failure stage.
First, identify which phone feature is failing
“Connect my phone” can mean several different ChromeOS features. They do not all use the same requirements, so a failure in one does not prove that the basic phone connection is broken.

| Phone Hub | Connects an Android phone to show phone status, notifications, recent photos, messages, open Chrome tabs and, where supported, app streaming. | Phone Hub icon by the Chromebook clock, or Settings > Connected devices. | This is the normal phone-connection path. It is not ordinary Bluetooth accessory pairing. |
| Bluetooth accessory pairing | Connects peripherals such as headphones, keyboards or mice. | Settings > Bluetooth > Add Bluetooth device. | Google says a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook through this menu. |
| App streaming | Displays and controls selected phone apps on the Chromebook. | Phone Hub, after the phone connection is working. | It has narrower phone-model, Android-version, Wi-Fi, proximity and permission requirements. |
| Instant Tethering | Shares the phone’s mobile-data connection with the Chromebook. | The Chromebook’s network controls, after eligible devices are connected. | It is a separate capability with its own ChromeOS, Android, account and carrier conditions. |
If your phone is missing from Add Bluetooth device, that alone is not a fault. Use the Android-phone connection flow instead.

Check compatibility before changing settings
Google documents more than one Android-phone connection path, with different minimum versions. Do not treat one number as a universal requirement for every Phone Hub feature.
| Documented path | Chromebook requirement | Phone requirement | What the requirement covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone Hub setup | ChromeOS M89 or later | Android 5.1 or later | Basic connected-phone features listed by Google, including notifications, recent photos, messaging, open Chrome tabs and phone status. App streaming can require more. |
| Google’s broader Android-phone connection page | ChromeOS 71 or later | Android 6 or later | Features such as messaging, photos, mobile-network connection and unlocking in that documented path. |
| Instant Tethering | ChromeOS 71 or later and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot | Android 8.1 or later | Using the phone’s mobile data on the Chromebook. Your carrier can restrict or charge for hotspot use. |
These are separate Google-documented feature paths, not a single combined minimum. Check the Chromebook’s ChromeOS version and the phone’s Android version before troubleshooting. Google also notes that internet problems can delay phone verification, even when Bluetooth is working.
Use the correct Phone Hub setup flow
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. On the Chromebook, use the system controls near the clock. On the phone, enable Bluetooth in the phone’s connectivity controls.
- Open the Chromebook’s phone setup. Select the Phone Hub icon by the clock, choose Get Started, accept the prompts, and select Set up Android phone under Connected devices. You can reach the same area through Settings > Connected devices.
- Follow the on-screen account and permission prompts. The phone and Chromebook should be signed in to the same Google Account.
- Finish the wizard. When setup completes, select Done, then open Phone Hub to check the available features.
Do not substitute Add Bluetooth device for this process. That screen is for Bluetooth accessories, and Google explicitly directs phone users to the Android-phone connection flow.
If the Android-phone option is missing
Confirm software and device support
Check that the Chromebook meets the M89-or-later Phone Hub requirement and that the phone runs Android 5.1 or later. A feature can also be absent when the device is eligible for basic connection but not for a particular Phone Hub function.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
Update both sides
Install available Android updates and update Google Play Services on the phone. Also install available ChromeOS updates. Restart after updating so the setup service reloads with the current software.
Check the signed-in account
Verify the account shown on the Chromebook and the account used on the Android phone are the same. A family member’s, work profile’s or secondary account can make the setup appear unavailable even when both devices are online.
If setup starts but verification never finishes
Test internet access
Phone verification can be delayed by an internet problem. Open a web page on the Chromebook and confirm that the phone can also reach the internet. If either device is offline, captive-portal Wi-Fi or an unstable connection can prevent completion.

Keep the devices available during setup
Leave Bluetooth enabled on both devices and keep the phone nearby while the prompts are running. Do not turn Bluetooth off or close the setup flow until verification completes.

Check management restrictions
A Chromebook owned by a school or employer can have phone features disabled by policy. If the device is managed, contact its administrator and ask whether Android-phone connection features are allowed. A personal troubleshooting reset cannot override an administrator’s policy.
If the phone was connected before
Remove the old pairing on both devices
When a previous phone or an earlier pairing is stuck, remove that pairing from the Chromebook and the phone. Then toggle the phone’s Bluetooth off and on, restart the Chromebook, and run the Connected devices setup again.
Disconnect a phone you are replacing
If another phone is still connected, disconnect it first. Phone Hub may continue trying to use the existing phone until it has been removed from the connected-devices configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHandle duplicate phone entries
If the same phone appears more than once, select the first listing. If it has not connected after a few minutes, forget that entry and try the next listing. Duplicate entries can represent stale Bluetooth or account state rather than two separate usable connections.

When Chromebook Bluetooth itself is unreliable
If headphones and other Bluetooth accessories also fail, treat this as a ChromeOS Bluetooth problem rather than a Phone Hub-only problem. Use this order:
- Install any available ChromeOS update.
- Turn Chromebook Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Try the Phone Hub setup again from Settings > Connected devices.
- If Bluetooth remains broadly unreliable, perform a Chromebook hard reset according to Google’s ChromeOS hardware-reset procedure. A hard reset should be a later step, because it interrupts hardware state and is unnecessary when only the phone setup is misconfigured.
If other Bluetooth devices work normally while Phone Hub does not, return to the account, Android/Google Play Services update and stale-pairing checks instead of buying a Bluetooth adapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Phone Hub works, but app streaming does not
App streaming is not proof of basic Phone Hub failure. Google lists additional limits, including supported phone models and Android versions. The documented examples include Pixel 4a or later on Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models running Android 13 or later.

- The phone and Chromebook must use the same Wi-Fi network.
- The devices must be near each other.
- Some public or private Wi-Fi networks may not support streaming.
- The phone must grant the requested permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps.
- Google describes a lock-screen requirement for some stream starts.
Therefore, first make sure Phone Hub itself connects and displays ordinary phone information. Then check the streaming model, Android version, shared Wi-Fi, proximity and permissions. Changing Bluetooth settings alone will not satisfy these extra conditions.

Phone Hub works, but Instant Tethering does not
Instant Tethering uses the phone’s mobile data and is a separate feature. Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. Your mobile carrier may limit hotspot use or charge an additional fee.
A tethering failure therefore does not establish that Phone Hub pairing is broken. Check tethering eligibility, the account match, ChromeOS and Android versions, Chromebook support and carrier terms independently.
What not to do
- Do not keep searching the Bluetooth accessory list for the phone. Google’s documented instruction is to use the Android-phone connection flow.
- Do not buy a Bluetooth adapter as the first fix. An adapter does not replace Phone Hub’s account, software-version and verification requirements.
- Do not assume every feature shares one version minimum. Basic Phone Hub, the broader Android-phone connection path, app streaming and Instant Tethering have different documented conditions.
- Do not repeatedly add a phone without removing stale entries. Forget the old pairing on both devices, then start a clean setup.
- Do not ignore management policy. A school or work administrator may intentionally block phone features.
A complete recovery sequence
Use this condensed sequence when you need a single pass through the likely causes:
- Check the relevant ChromeOS and Android minimums for the feature you want.
- Update ChromeOS, Android and Google Play Services.
- Sign in to the same Google Account on both devices.
- Enable Bluetooth on both devices and confirm both can access the internet.
- Open Phone Hub or Settings > Connected devices; choose Get Started and Set up Android phone.
- If an earlier phone is listed, disconnect it. Forget stale pairings on both devices.
- Toggle the phone’s Bluetooth off and on, restart the Chromebook, and repeat setup.
- If duplicate listings appear, try the first, then forget it and try another after a few minutes if necessary.
- If verification still stalls, check school or work administration and network access.
- If all Chromebook Bluetooth functions fail, update, toggle Bluetooth, restart and only then consider a hard reset.
This sequence addresses the common setup, account, software, Bluetooth-state, verification and policy causes without confusing Phone Hub with accessory pairing, app streaming or tethering.
