An ordinary Bluetooth speaker generally cannot connect directly to a PS5 as its audio output. PlayStation’s current support guidance for error CE-109531-9 says Bluetooth audio devices are not compatible with PS5 consoles, so repeated pairing attempts are unlikely to solve the problem. To hear PS5 audio through a speaker, use the console’s HDMI audio route to a TV or AV system, then check whether that equipment can send sound to your Bluetooth speaker.

Why the PS5 won’t pair with your speaker

The issue is usually compatibility, not a speaker setting you have missed. PlayStation’s support guidance for error CE-109531-9 states: “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” It advises trying a different audio device. In other words, putting a standard Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode does not make it a supported PS5 audio output.

Bluetooth being present in a console or accessory feature list does not mean the PS5 accepts generic Bluetooth audio devices. Sony’s PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, also said third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth would not be supported, while noting that most USB and analog headsets would be supported. For the broader current Bluetooth-audio limitation, the CE-109531-9 support guidance is the more direct reference.

How to interpret the pairing failure

  • If you are selecting the speaker from the PS5’s Bluetooth-device pairing screen and it will not connect, treat the console’s compatibility limit as the likely cause.
  • Turning the speaker off and on, clearing its pairing list, or repeating pairing mode may help with ordinary pairing faults between supported devices, but it does not add generic Bluetooth audio support to the PS5.
  • If the speaker is connected to a TV or other equipment rather than directly to the PS5, that is a different connection path. Its success depends on the specific equipment.

A useful first question is therefore not “How do I make the speaker visible?” but “Which device is supposed to send audio to it?” If the answer is the PS5 itself, PlayStation’s compatibility notice is the key evidence. If the answer is the TV or AV system, troubleshoot that device’s output support and settings instead. The distinction matters because a speaker can work with a phone or TV over Bluetooth and still not be a supported direct PS5 audio device.

Ways to hear PS5 audio through a speaker

Connection route What is established What to check
Pair an ordinary Bluetooth speaker directly to PS5 PlayStation identifies Bluetooth audio devices as incompatible with PS5 consoles. Use another supported audio route rather than repeating direct pairing.
PS5 HDMI audio to a TV or AV system, then onward to a speaker PS5 audio settings include output-device and HDMI-device configuration for TVs and AV systems. Check the TV or AV system’s own manual for whether and how it can output audio to your Bluetooth speaker.
PS5 with PULSE Elevate PlayStation describes PULSE Elevate as using PlayStation Link to connect to PS5. Its Bluetooth connection is for compatible separate devices, such as a TV or smartphone. Do not confuse the speaker’s Bluetooth feature with its PS5 connection: the documented console connection is PlayStation Link.

These options solve different needs. HDMI through existing TV or AV equipment is the route to investigate if you want to reuse your current speaker, but the extra Bluetooth step depends on that equipment. PULSE Elevate is a product designed for a PS5 setup with a documented PlayStation Link connection. Direct generic Bluetooth pairing is the route PlayStation’s compatibility guidance rules out. The sources reviewed do not verify a particular TV-to-speaker combination or a generic transmitter as a universal workaround.

Use the TV or AV system as the intermediary

If your PS5 is already connected to a TV or AV system over HDMI, the console can send audio along that route. Whether the receiving device can then send that audio to a Bluetooth speaker is a separate capability of that device, not something established by the PS5’s Bluetooth pairing support. TV and AV-system menus vary, so consult the manual for the exact model before relying on this setup.

Also check the whole audio chain: the PS5 must be sending sound to the HDMI-connected device, and that device must support sending audio to the speaker. A TV may receive HDMI audio without offering Bluetooth audio output, or its available output behavior may differ by model. The PS5 documentation does not establish Bluetooth-output steps for a particular TV or display.

To narrow down the question, identify the device physically receiving the PS5’s HDMI connection, then look up that device’s audio-output options. Confirm that it can send audio to your speaker and that the speaker accepts the kind of audio connection the device provides. If the TV or AV equipment does not support that route, changing PS5 Bluetooth pairing settings will not create it. The manuals are the authority for model-specific menus and supported connections; no universal TV menu path can be given from the PS5 guidance alone.

Choose a speaker with a documented PS5 connection

If you are choosing a wireless speaker specifically for PS5, confirm that its console connection method is explicitly supported. PlayStation lists PULSE Elevate as a desktop speaker system for PS5, PC, and Mac, using PlayStation Link for PS5. Its Bluetooth connectivity supports compatible separate devices such as TVs and smartphones; it is not an example of a standard Bluetooth speaker pairing directly to the console.

This distinction is important when comparing product descriptions. A listing that says “Bluetooth” may describe connections to phones or other compatible devices, not a PS5 audio connection. Look for the stated console connection method and check that it names PS5. For PULSE Elevate, the documented PS5 route is PlayStation Link; Bluetooth is a separate feature for compatible devices. Do not infer compatibility just because two products both offer wireless audio.

Check PS5 audio output settings

Once the console is connected to a supported output device, verify that PS5 is sending audio where you expect. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select the intended output device, and review the HDMI device type if the console feeds a TV or AV system.

These settings help select and configure the PS5’s supported audio route; they are not a Bluetooth-pairing workaround. If the expected device is not receiving sound, check the selected output and HDMI device type before assuming the Bluetooth speaker itself is the problem. The next step then depends on the receiving equipment: a TV’s audio forwarding capability is model-specific, while an AV system has HDMI and speaker-configuration options to match its setup.

For a TV connection

  1. On PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Check the selected output device and choose the intended HDMI-connected device if it is available.
  3. If you expect the TV to forward sound to your Bluetooth speaker, use the TV’s documentation to confirm that it supports that output route and find the model-specific setup instructions.

If the television can receive PS5 audio but cannot send it onward to your Bluetooth speaker, the HDMI connection may still work while the proposed speaker route does not. Confirm this capability before buying an accessory or spending time repeating direct pairing attempts.

For an AV amplifier or system

  1. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output on PS5.
  2. Set the HDMI device type to match the connected AV equipment.
  3. Review the available channel-count and speaker-position options and configure them to match the actual system.

These AV options are for configuring the HDMI-connected system. Match them to the equipment you actually use rather than treating them as generic Bluetooth-speaker controls. The available channel count and speaker-position choices are relevant when the PS5 is sending sound to an AV amplifier or system, not when trying to pair an ordinary Bluetooth speaker directly.

These settings configure the PS5’s HDMI audio device; they do not turn a directly paired generic Bluetooth speaker into a supported PS5 output.

Troubleshooting by connection path

The speaker is paired to the PS5 itself

  • Stop troubleshooting the speaker’s pairing mode as the primary fix. PlayStation’s compatibility guidance is the relevant explanation for a Bluetooth audio device that cannot connect.
  • Choose a supported output route, such as HDMI to a TV or AV system, or use a speaker with a console connection method explicitly documented for PS5.

In this situation, trying the speaker with a phone can confirm that it powers on and pairs with that other device, but it does not change the PS5’s compatibility. Similarly, making the speaker discoverable again does not establish that the console supports it. If the goal is game audio from the PS5, choose a different route rather than treating the issue as a failed ordinary Bluetooth pairing.

The speaker is meant to receive audio from the TV or AV system

  • Confirm that the PS5 is outputting audio to the HDMI-connected TV or AV equipment in Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  • Check the receiving device’s manual for Bluetooth audio output support and its setup procedure. The steps depend on the make and model.
  • If the receiving device is an AV amplifier, verify that its HDMI device type and available speaker configuration in PS5 settings match the connected system.

Think of this as two linked checks, not one pairing operation: first verify that the PS5 sends audio to the TV or AV system, then verify that the receiving equipment can output it to the speaker. The fact that the speaker pairs with some Bluetooth source does not confirm that the TV or AV system can forward PS5 audio to it.

You are considering a Bluetooth transmitter

The PlayStation guidance cited here does not verify a generic Bluetooth transmitter as a PS5 solution, nor does it establish compatibility for a particular transmitter, TV, or speaker combination. Before buying or connecting one, check the manuals for each device and confirm that the proposed input and output connections work together. A transmitter should not be assumed to bypass the PS5’s direct Bluetooth-audio limitation.

In particular, distinguish a confirmed compatibility statement from a product being advertised as wireless or Bluetooth. The reviewed sources establish PS5 HDMI audio settings and PULSE Elevate’s PlayStation Link connection, but do not establish a universal adapter setup, transmitter connection point, supported format, or model-specific instructions. There is no verified transmitter recommendation here; check the exact equipment documentation before relying on one.

What to check before buying a wireless speaker

  • Look for an explicit statement that the speaker’s console connection method works with PS5, rather than relying on the word “Bluetooth.”
  • For a speaker used through a TV or AV system, check both the receiving device’s audio-output capabilities and the speaker’s supported input modes.
  • Keep the two connection roles separate: a product may use a dedicated wireless link for PS5 and Bluetooth for a phone or TV.

Compare options by connection route and evidence, not just by whether they are wireless. If you want to reuse an existing speaker, the critical question is whether your TV or AV equipment can receive HDMI audio and send it onward in a supported way. If you are buying for PS5, check that the console method is explicitly documented. PlayStation documents PULSE Elevate’s PlayStation Link connection to PS5 and Bluetooth support for compatible separate devices. That is a specific supported arrangement, not evidence that all wireless speakers or Bluetooth transmitters will work with the console.
