The earbuds are only the last stage in the playback chain. A music app can change the equalization, loudness and mix; the phone can add system effects and negotiate a Bluetooth codec; the earbuds then decode that stream and apply their own tuning. If any stage differs, the same earbuds can sound brighter, bassier, quieter, wider or more compressed on another phone or in another app.

The fastest way to find the cause is to compare the same recording at matched volume with app EQ, normalization and spatial effects temporarily disabled. Then change one setting at a time.

What actually changes between two listening setups

“The same earbuds” does not mean “the same signal.” Your listening path normally looks like this:

  1. Source and app: The service selects a track version, stereo or spatial mix and stream quality. It may apply an equalizer, loudness normalization or other processing.
  2. Phone audio system: The operating system and phone maker can add EQ, spatial audio, volume limits or enhancements. The phone also negotiates how audio will be sent over Bluetooth.
  3. Bluetooth link: A codec compresses the digital stream for wireless transmission. The earbuds decode it, and the active codec depends on what both devices support and what their software chooses.
  4. Earbuds: Their firmware, acoustic tuning, fit, ear-tip seal and companion-app profile shape the final sound.

A difference that appears when you switch phones may therefore be caused by software or the Bluetooth path rather than a change in the drivers themselves.

Music-app processing is often the first culprit

Equalizers change the tonal balance

An equalizer deliberately boosts or cuts frequency ranges. A bass shelf can make kick drums and low notes seem fuller; a treble boost can add perceived detail while also making sibilants more prominent. Presets may be enabled per app and remain active between sessions, so two services can feed the same earbuds very different tonal balances.

On current iPhone documentation, Music controls are under Settings > Apps > Music. The EQ control changes how music sounds, while Sound Check normalizes volume. Turn both off for a neutral comparison, or deliberately match the settings on each device.

Normalization changes loudness, not the recording

Spotify describes volume normalization as balancing soft and loud songs for a more uniform listening experience. Its playback settings offer selectable volume levels on iOS and Android. A louder sample is commonly judged as clearer or more powerful even when the underlying signal is unchanged. Disable normalization while diagnosing a tonal difference, or use the same normalization mode in both apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Normalization controls may not be editable while Spotify Connect is playing to another device. Stop remote playback before changing them. Menu names and locations can change with app versions, so use the current playback or audio settings screen if the label has moved.

Spatial and immersive mixes are different content

An app may offer a stereo master and a spatial or immersive version of the same song. Those are separate mixes, not merely two volume settings. Vocals, reverberation, bass placement and apparent width can all change. Confirm that both tests use the same recording, master and mix before blaming the phone or earbuds.

“Lossless” in a music app is not lossless over Bluetooth

Lossless catalog availability and wireless transmission are separate questions. A service can supply a lossless file to the phone, yet the phone may send it through a lossy Bluetooth codec. Apple states that its named AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and Beats wireless headphones use the AAC Bluetooth codec and that Bluetooth connections are not lossless. The connected headphones or speakers, track availability and network conditions also affect streamed quality.

That does not make a lossless subscription useless: it can matter for wired playback or another output path. It simply means the “lossless” badge alone cannot prove that a Bluetooth listener is receiving a lossless signal.

Bluetooth codecs explain compatibility, not a universal winner

An audio codec compresses the stream at the source for transmission and decompresses it at the receiving end. The phone and earbuds must share a compatible codec, and the active choice can change with firmware, operating-system policy, link conditions and settings. An advertised codec is not necessarily the codec being used at this moment.

A codec label also does not predict a guaranteed audible improvement. Bluetooth SIG’s LC3 overview says LC3 can provide higher quality than SBC at the same rate, or similar quality at a lower rate. Its illustrative comparison reports SBC at 345 kbps with a score just above 4.0 on the referenced subjective scale, while LC3 scores higher at 160 kbps. Those are specific comparison conditions, not a ranking of every AAC, SBC, LDAC, aptX variant or LC3 implementation and not a promise that every listener will hear a difference.

Codec example Example in the cited comparison How to interpret it
SBC 345 kbps; score just above 4.0 on the source’s subjective scale An illustrative reference point, not a universal product score
LC3 160 kbps; higher score than the cited SBC example Shows the source’s quality-at-bitrate claim under its stated comparison conditions

Do not assume that Android always sounds better because some Android phones expose more codec choices, or that AAC is always inferior. Implementation quality, antenna and radio conditions, firmware, content and the earbuds’ DSP all matter. The evidence does not establish a universal, independently tested winner across current phones and earbuds.

Phone-level effects and spatial audio can reshape playback

Many phones expose system EQ, “sound enhancement,” headphone profiles or spatial-audio switches. These may operate after an app’s own processing, so an app can be flat while the phone still colors the result.

Android’s spatial-audio guidance for Android 13 and later compatible implementations describes behavior that depends on the phone implementation, the connected headset and user settings. Apps can use device capabilities, rendering context and user choices when selecting suitable content. That does not mean every Android phone or headset supports every spatial feature.

The same guidance specifies a head-tracking latency limit of 150 milliseconds for one implementation requirement. This is an engineering requirement for that spatial-audio implementation, not a measurement of ordinary music latency and not evidence that one phone sounds better.

For a baseline test, disable spatial audio, head tracking, system EQ and enhancement modes on both phones if those controls are available. Re-enable one feature intentionally afterward. If the tonal or width change appears only when a particular switch is on, you have identified a processing difference rather than a Bluetooth-quality mystery.

A controlled comparison that produces useful answers

Subjective listening is easily biased by louder playback, a different master or a changed earbud seal. Use this sequence whenever two phones or apps seem different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose one source. Play the same song, recording/version and stereo or spatial mix. If one app has selected a different version, switch it manually or use the same downloaded file.
  2. Match loudness. Set both devices to a comfortable, similar level. A small loudness advantage can be mistaken for extra detail or bass. Recheck the level after changing EQ or normalization.
  3. Establish a processing baseline. Disable app EQ and volume normalization, or set identical values. In Music on iPhone, use Settings > Apps > Music to inspect EQ and Sound Check. In Spotify, open playback settings and inspect normalization; controls may be unavailable during Spotify Connect playback.
  4. Remove phone effects. Turn off spatial audio, head tracking, system EQ and enhancement modes where the phone exposes them.
  5. Hold the stream constant. Select the same quality setting and use a stable network, or compare the same locally downloaded track. Streaming quality can vary with network conditions and track availability.
  6. Inspect the Bluetooth path. Check the codec capabilities of both devices and, where the phone exposes it, the currently active codec. Reconnect after changing a codec or audio setting; some changes do not apply to an existing connection.
  7. Change one variable. Restore one setting at a time and listen again. Record what changed and whether the difference affects bass, treble, stereo width, volume or artifacts.

This is a controlled troubleshooting method, not a laboratory listening test. It prevents a louder signal or a different mix from masquerading as a codec improvement.

If the difference remains after settings are matched

Check the earbuds’ physical and firmware state

Use the same ear tips and fit on both tests. A weak seal can remove bass, while a different insertion angle can change treble. Confirm that both earbuds have the same firmware and that the companion app is not applying a device-specific EQ, hearing profile or adaptive mode. Exact controls vary by model.

Look for platform-specific earbud behavior

Some earbuds expose more controls on one operating system than another, or fall back to a different Bluetooth path when a preferred codec is unavailable. If app and phone processing are aligned but the sound still changes, compare the active codec and the earbud’s companion-app profile before concluding that the drivers are different.

Separate intermittent artifacts from tonal differences

Crackles, brief dropouts and warbling usually point toward radio interference, link conditions or a codec renegotiation rather than a fixed tuning change. Keep the phone nearby, remove sources of interference and reconnect. A stable but consistently brighter or darker result is more likely to be an EQ, mix, codec implementation or earbud-profile difference.

How to compare two phones or two apps fairly

Use the following axes and write down the result for each one:

  • Processing: app EQ, normalization, spatial audio and system enhancements.
  • Source: identical track, master, mix and selected streaming quality.
  • Bluetooth compatibility: codecs supported by both devices, the codec actually active and link stability.
  • Level: matched playback loudness at the earbuds.
  • Earbud behavior: identical firmware, fit, ear-tip seal and companion-app profile.

If a difference disappears when these axes are aligned, the earbuds were probably not the primary cause. If it survives every controlled change, the remaining explanation may be model-specific DSP or tuning that the available general documentation cannot identify without the exact phone and earbud models.

When replacing earbuds is—and is not—the answer

Buying new earbuds should not be the first fix for a setting mismatch. First establish whether EQ, normalization, spatial processing, stream quality or codec negotiation explains the result. Replacement becomes reasonable when your current earbuds lack a control you need, cannot share a compatible codec with the phone you use, have an unreliable connection or no longer maintain a consistent fit.

When evaluating another pair, check the exact phone-earbud combination rather than relying on a codec badge. Confirm supported codecs, whether the phone lets you see or select the active path, available spatial features, firmware support and companion-app controls. No codec specification by itself guarantees a perceptible upgrade.

Key takeaways

  • The audible result is a chain: app, phone processing, Bluetooth codec and earbud tuning.
  • App EQ, normalization and a different stereo/spatial mix are common, reversible causes.
  • A lossless source does not remain lossless across Bluetooth; the wireless path still uses a codec.
  • Codec claims describe technical trade-offs, not a universal ranking or guaranteed audible difference.
  • Android spatial audio depends on the implementation, headset and user settings; Android 13+ guidance includes a 150 ms head-tracking limit for one requirement.
  • Same track, matched level and one-variable-at-a-time testing provide the most reliable diagnosis.
