Winged termites—called alates or swarmers—are the reproductive adults produced by a mature colony. They leave in coordinated flights to mate, disperse, and try to start new colonies. After landing, a male and female shed their wings, find protected, usually moist shelter, seal themselves into a small nest chamber, mate, and begin raising the first eggs. The attempt usually fails, but swarmers indoors or piles of shed wings deserve investigation because they can signal a colony in or beneath a structure.

What a termite swarm means

A swarm is the dispersal stage of a termite colony’s life cycle, not an attack by a new group of wood-eating insects. When a colony reaches maturity, it produces winged males and females. Environmental cues trigger them to leave, fly, pair with mates, and search for places where a new colony might survive. The reproductive adults do not chew structural wood; worker termites do that job after a colony is established. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program explains the reproductive flight and colony-founding process in its termite biology guidance.

Swarming is therefore both a sign of reproductive success for the original colony and a high-risk dispersal event for the individual termites. Birds, lizards, ants, other insects, dehydration, unsuitable ground and predators kill many swarmers during or immediately after flight. The few that pair and find suitable shelter still face the difficult task of raising a first generation of workers. UC IPM says very few swarmers pair and establish a colony, and very few colonies that are established reach maturity.

What happens after winged termites land

The sequence is broadly consistent for subterranean termites, although details vary by species and region.

  1. They stop flying and pair. New kings and queens generally travel less than 100 metres from their parent colony, according to UC IPM. After landing, they locate a mate rather than continuing to forage like workers.
  2. They shed their wings. A successful male–female pair breaks off its wings at the base. Finding piles of matching discarded wings is often easier than finding the insects themselves.
  3. They seek a protected nest site. The pair looks for cover such as soil, a crack, a space beneath a rock, or other moist material. Texas A&M’s description of native subterranean termites notes that the pair seeks cover under rocks or moist material and makes a very small nest before mating.
  4. They build and seal a chamber. The pair excavates a small underground or otherwise protected chamber, enters it, and seals the opening. This reduces exposure to drying air and predators while the new queen begins reproduction.
  5. They mate and the queen lays the first eggs. Mating occurs soon after the chamber is closed. The new queen initially lays only a few eggs in some subterranean termite species. For eastern subterranean termites, the first clutch is several dozen eggs, laid within days or weeks after pairing, followed by smaller numbers at intervals.
  6. The king remains with the queen. Unlike many social insects in which the male disappears after mating, the termite king stays in the nest. He helps care for the developing eggs and larvae with the queen, as described by Texas A&M and Mississippi State University’s termite biology guidance.
  7. The first young become the colony’s workforce. The king and queen care for the earliest brood until enough workers develop to take over nest construction, food gathering and care of later generations. Only then can the colony expand beyond its founding chamber.

Failure can occur at any point: the pair may not find a mate, the chamber may be too dry or exposed, predators may reach it, or the first brood may not survive. That is why seeing hundreds of alates does not mean hundreds of new colonies will appear.

Why termites swarm at different times

There is no universal “termite season.” Flight timing depends on species, geography, temperature, light, soil moisture and recent weather. Heat, light and moisture can influence emergence, but each species has its own requirements, according to Texas A&M University’s native subterranean termite information.

Example Region or species Typical timing reported by the source Flight conditions or time of day
Reticulitermes California Spring or fall Clear afternoons after soaking rain
Eastern subterranean termites Eastern United States February–April Usually daytime flights
Dark southeastern subterranean termites Southeastern United States April–June Native subterranean termites in this region generally swarm during the day
Light southeastern subterranean termites Southeastern United States July–September Native subterranean termites in this region generally swarm during the day
Formosan subterranean termites Southeastern United States April–July Flights may begin at dusk and continue until about midnight

The dates in this table are regional examples, not a calendar for every property. The University of Georgia’s biology guide documents the eastern U.S. patterns, while UC IPM emphasizes that flight time changes with species and location. A warm, wet spell can bring out one species while another in the same area waits for different conditions.

Does an indoor swarm mean your house has termites?

It can. NC State Extension says swarmers found indoors may indicate an infestation in or under the structure. A flight emerging through a wall, floor, baseboard, crawl-space opening or plumbing penetration is more concerning than a few insects that flew in through an open door. Piles of shed wings on windowsills, floors or near lights are also an important clue because alates often discard their wings soon after landing.

Outdoor swarmers are less conclusive. They may come from a colony in your yard, a neighbouring yard, a stump, landscape timber or nearby woody debris rather than from the building. Maryland Extension notes that most alates that fly indoors die from dehydration and that alates themselves are not dangerous to structural wood. The concern is the colony that produced them and any workers already moving through the structure.

Look for additional evidence:

  • mud or shelter tubes on foundations, crawl-space piers or basement walls;
  • soil packed into cracks or joints;
  • wood that is blistered, hollow-sounding, weakened or otherwise changed;
  • new cracks, sagging or other structural changes that coincide with suspected termite activity; and
  • repeated flights or fresh wing piles in the same area.

These signs are discussed by the University of Maryland Extension. None identifies a species by itself, so preserve evidence for identification.

Will killing the swarmers prevent a termite infestation?

No. Vacuuming, sweeping up or spraying visible alates removes the immediate nuisance but does not eliminate the workers, king, queen or nest that produced them. Most swarmers would fail to establish a colony anyway, but that natural failure rate is not a treatment for an existing colony. If the flight originated inside the building, killing the insects you can see leaves the underlying activity unaddressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not judge risk by the number of insects killed. A small indoor flight can be more significant than a large outdoor cloud because location provides evidence about where the parent colony may be. Conversely, a large outdoor flight beside a property may be unrelated to the building. Inspection and identification—not the swarm count—determine the appropriate response.

How to tell termite swarmers from flying ants

Flying ants are commonly mistaken for termites during a sudden flight. Compare the three features below before deciding what you saw.

Feature Termite swarmer Flying ant
Wings Four wings of roughly equal size Forewings larger than hind wings
Antennae Straight Elbowed
Waist Broad, without a pinched waist Narrow, pinched waist

NC State and Maryland Extension both recommend saving an insect or shed wings when identification is uncertain. Place a specimen in a clean, sealable vial or preserve clear photographs showing the wings, antennae and body shape. An extension specialist or pest professional can use that evidence to confirm whether the flight involved termites or ants.

What to do when you find swarmers or shed wings

  1. Document the location and date. Note whether the insects were indoors, on an exterior wall, in a crawl space or in the yard. Record weather conditions and whether the flight occurred during daylight or after dark.
  2. Collect evidence. Save one intact insect and several wings if possible. Do not rely on a crushed specimen that hides the waist or antennae.
  3. Check nearby areas without disturbing them. Inspect windowsills, baseboards, crawl-space access points, foundations, plumbing penetrations, porch supports and stored wood for wings, tubes or damaged wood.
  4. Review the property’s treatment history. Previous termite treatments, warranties, additions, repairs and moisture problems help an inspector interpret a new flight.
  5. Arrange an inspection for indoor activity or other signs. A local termite professional can determine whether the colony is in the structure, beneath it or elsewhere on the property and evaluate treatment options.
  6. Reduce conditions that favour termites while awaiting evaluation. Correct leaks, improve drainage and keep untreated wood, cardboard and dense woody debris from contacting the foundation. These steps reduce conducive conditions but do not replace an inspection or treatment when a colony is present.

Do not seal every crack or remove all evidence before an inspection. Photographs and preserved specimens are often more useful than a clean-up that leaves no clues.

Why the founding attempt usually fails

A mature colony can release a conspicuous number of alates, but dispersal is deliberately wasteful. Swarmers are exposed during flight, lose water quickly, attract predators and must find both a compatible mate and a nest site with suitable moisture and protection. Even after pairing, the queen has little workforce and the first brood is vulnerable. UC IPM records mortality from birds, lizards, ants and other insects; the University of Georgia describes colony establishment by swarming as having an extremely low success rate.

This low probability explains two apparently contradictory facts: a swarm does not automatically mean a new infestation will develop, yet an indoor swarm should never be dismissed. The swarmers are evidence that a reproductive colony exists somewhere nearby. The practical question is where that parent colony is and whether workers are already reaching the building.

Key takeaways for homeowners

  • Winged termites are reproductive adults leaving a mature colony to mate and disperse.
  • After landing, a successful pair sheds its wings, finds shelter, seals a tiny chamber, mates and starts raising eggs; the king remains with the queen.
  • Most founding attempts fail, so a swarm is not proof that every swarmer will create a colony.
  • Species, region, season, time of day and weather control when flights occur; no single calendar applies everywhere.
  • Swarmers do not damage structural wood, but workers from the parent colony can.
  • Indoor flights or piles of shed wings justify identification and inspection, while outdoor flights may originate anywhere nearby.
  • Killing visible swarmers does not remove an established colony or prevent an infestation.
