A dark screen does not mean Windows has gone to sleep. The PC may still be active, finishing a transition, or running in the Screen Off phase—and that distinction is the first clue to unexpected disk activity. The exact cause cannot be identified without the affected PC’s Windows version, hardware details, and activity reports, but Windows includes tools that can help narrow it down before you change settings or replace a drive.
Screen off and sleep are different states
Turning off the display only tells you that the screen is dark. It does not establish that the computer has entered its low-power sleep state. On PCs that support Modern Standby, Windows separates a screen-off-to-screen-on session into three states: Active, Screen Off, and Sleep. Screen Off can include time while Windows is quiescing the system; Sleep is the longer-term low-power phase. See Microsoft’s Modern Standby overview.
That matters because disk activity observed while the display is dark may have occurred before the PC reached Sleep—or while it was awake. Start by identifying the state and the process or component active at the time. A disk-use spike alone does not identify its cause.
Check Modern Standby activity with SleepStudy
SleepStudy is a built-in report for PCs that implement Modern Standby; it is not a universal report for every Windows sleep model. Microsoft describes it as showing active and idle time, power consumed, and first-level information about activity. It is designed to minimize measurement impact. Microsoft notes that “traditional disk-based logging has the unwanted side effect of causing excessive battery usage when the disk is activated for logging.” Read Microsoft’s SleepStudy documentation for the report’s scope and interpretation.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /sleepstudy. Windows saves an HTML report in the current directory. By default, the report covers the last three days. - If the event is older, run
powercfg /sleepstudy /duration 7to request seven days. The duration can be extended up to 28 days. - Open the generated report and locate the session that overlaps the disk activity. Check whether it contains Active, Screen Off, and Sleep segments, then review Screen Off blockers and the active components listed for the Sleep session.
SleepStudy identifies the five most active components for each Sleep session. Treat a component or blocker as a lead to investigate, not proof that it caused a specific disk spike. The report’s state timeline can also show that the PC had not yet reached Sleep when the screen went dark.
Use other power reports when the PC wakes or will not settle
If the machine appears to wake unexpectedly, remain active, or fail to settle into sleep, these commands can help establish what happened. Run them in an elevated Command Prompt:

| Command | What it reports |
|---|---|
powercfg /lastwake |
The source of the most recent wake. |
powercfg /waketimers |
Active wake timers. |
powercfg /requests |
Power requests made by applications and drivers. |
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics |
Periods of user absence and sleep transitions. |
powercfg /energy |
An energy-efficiency analysis report. |
For powercfg /energy, Microsoft says to run the analysis while the computer is idle and with no programs or documents open; its default observation period is 60 seconds. It is a separate energy analysis, not a direct identification of which process caused disk activity. Command details are in Microsoft’s powercfg command-line options.

Scheduled maintenance is one possible reason activity could coincide with unattended time. Microsoft says, “Task Scheduler maintenance tasks are opportunistic tasks that run when the machine is idle and on AC power.” Work may be deferred while the user is active and resume during a later idle period. This describes when maintenance may run; it does not establish that maintenance caused a particular disk spike. Check the report’s timing and the named component or task before changing a setting. See Microsoft’s Automatic maintenance (Task Scheduler) documentation.

Why an old post-sleep disk issue is not a general fix
Microsoft documented a case in which disk use reached 100 percent after sleep and the computer stopped responding. The issue was specific to Windows 8.1, with Device Initiated Power Management enabled, on a non-Connected-Standby Intel Haswell system using a Lynx Point Rev4 chipset, and involved certain SATA-drive Automatic Partial to Slumber behavior. The page was last updated February 12, 2026. Its workaround applies to that configuration, not to an unspecified current Windows PC. See Microsoft’s documentation of the Windows 8.1 issue.

A practical order for finding the cause
- Establish whether only the display turned off or the PC entered sleep. On a Modern Standby computer, use the SleepStudy timeline to identify the state.
- Run SleepStudy and compare the incident time with its state segments, Screen Off blockers, and active components.
- If the PC woke or stayed active, check the last wake source, wake timers, power requests, and sleep transitions using the commands above.
- Match any named component or maintenance activity to the time of the observed disk use. Do not assume a report entry is causal without that timing match.
- Only then consider a targeted setting change or further hardware diagnosis. The evidence available here does not identify a particular faulty drive, service, task, or configuration.
