If you see “You’re not receiving security updates” or “Your device has reached the end of service,” Windows is warning that the version installed on your PC is no longer receiving its normal security fixes. The computer does not stop working, but the operating-system exposure increases as new threats emerge. The next step depends on whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11, your edition, and your version.
What the warning means—and what it does not mean
Windows end of support is not a remote shutdown. Your PC can still start and run its installed programs. But once its Windows release is out of support, Microsoft no longer provides regular operating-system security updates, other quality updates, or Windows technical support for that release. That leaves newly discovered vulnerabilities without the usual fixes. Microsoft explains the Windows 10 warning in its notification guidance.
Antivirus software may help detect some threats, but Microsoft says it does not replace operating-system security updates. Treat the alert as a prompt to move to a supported Windows release, enroll in an applicable extension program, or replace hardware that cannot be upgraded.
First, check your Windows version and edition
The deadline depends on the specific release and edition—not merely on whether the screen says Windows 10 or Windows 11. To check, open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, note the edition and version. You can also open Settings > Windows Update to see whether updates or upgrade offers are available.

| Windows release | End-of-support or update date | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 Home and Pro, version 22H2 | October 14, 2025 | Regular Windows 10 support has ended. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing covers these editions and this release: Windows 10 Home and Pro. |
| Windows 11, version 24H2, Home and Pro | October 13, 2026 | Move to a supported Windows 11 version, such as 25H2, to continue receiving monthly security and quality updates. |
| Windows 11, version 24H2, Enterprise and Education | October 12, 2027 | This later servicing date applies to the listed Enterprise and Education editions, not Home or Pro. |
Microsoft lists the Windows 11 servicing dates in its Windows message center. An older warning can also reflect an individual Windows 10 release reaching the end of its servicing period; Microsoft says each Windows 10 version is supported for 18 months. Check the version shown in Settings rather than assuming every alert has the same cause.
Choose the right next step
Upgrade this PC to Windows 11 if it is eligible
For an eligible Windows 10 PC, check Settings > Windows Update for an upgrade offer. Microsoft says eligible devices can upgrade through Windows Update. Confirm that the offered destination is a currently supported Windows 11 release; an upgrade to a release nearing its own servicing deadline is not a long-term solution.

Use Windows 10 ESU as a temporary bridge
Eligible consumers may be offered Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU). ESU provides critical and important security updates, but it does not add new features or restore general Windows technical support. It is a way to gain time, not a return to full Windows 10 support.
Microsoft’s current Support article says consumer ESU protection runs through October 12, 2027, while its Windows end-of-support page says ESU updates run through October 13, 2026. Those official pages conflict. Enrollment availability and terms can also vary by region, so check the ESU offer and date shown on your device and consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 support guidance before relying on a particular end date. Microsoft also describes the program on its Windows end-of-support page.

Replace the PC if it cannot move to a supported release
If your hardware is not eligible for Windows 11, Microsoft recommends considering a new Windows 11 computer. Choose based on your workload, budget, accessibility needs, and warranty; no particular model is required by the end-of-support warning. Check that the replacement runs a supported Windows release and that its specifications meet your needs.

Microsoft says it will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028. That date applies to those apps, not the Windows operating system: it does not extend Windows 10 support or supply missing Windows security fixes. See Microsoft’s end-of-support information for the distinction.
