Windows may open Microsoft Edge even when another browser is selected because the link did not use the ordinary system-wide browser setting. Outlook and Teams can have their own link preference, Windows Search and some widgets are Edge-dependent, and S mode requires Edge as the default. A single protocol or file association can also remain pointed at Edge while the general browser setting is correct.
Identify where the link came from first. Then verify the Windows default, inspect individual associations, check the PC’s S mode status, and review the affected app’s link setting. An Edge update may coincide with the problem, but Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that updates universally reset browser defaults.
What is really changing when Edge opens?
There are several settings that look like one “default browser” choice but operate at different levels:
- Windows’ web-browser default: the browser Windows normally uses for web links and web file types.
- Protocol and file-type associations: separate choices for links such as
HTTPandHTTPS, and files such as.htmand.html. - Application preferences: Outlook and Teams can decide to open links in Edge without changing the Windows default.
- Windows features: Windows Search results and some widgets or apps depend on Edge and may continue to use it.
- Windows S mode: Microsoft documents Edge as the required default browser in S mode.
Consequently, seeing Edge in one place does not prove that Windows has replaced your system-wide choice. The link’s source and the PC’s Windows edition determine which setting matters.

First, identify which links open in Edge
Before changing settings, open one link from each place where you notice the behavior. The pattern usually reveals the cause faster than repeatedly selecting a browser.

This source-based test matters: changing the Windows default cannot override an application’s deliberate Edge choice, and changing an app’s choice cannot repair a system association that still points to Edge.
Set the browser default in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- Search for and select the browser you want to use.
- Select Set default.
Afterward, test a normal web link outside the app or feature where you first saw Edge. Microsoft’s labels can change slightly between Windows releases, but the path remains the Default apps page. The current Microsoft steps are documented at Make the switch to Microsoft Edge.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Apps > Default apps.
- Under Web browser, select the current browser.
- Choose your preferred browser from the list.
Close and reopen the application that launched the link, then test again. If the browser reverts immediately, continue with the association and S mode checks instead of repeatedly selecting the same option.

Confirm that Windows saved the choice
Return to the same Default apps page after setting the browser. If the selected browser remains there but a particular link still opens Edge, the system-wide default is probably intact and the remaining cause is app-specific, feature-specific, or tied to one association. If the selection itself changes back, record the Windows edition and version and check S mode before treating an update as the cause.
Repair individual link and file associations
Windows allows a browser to be selected separately for each protocol or file type. This explains a common symptom: ordinary links open in your chosen browser, but links copied from a particular application or files with a web extension open Edge.

- Select your preferred browser.
- Review the entries for
HTTPandHTTPS. - Review web-page file types such as
.htmand.html. - Select any entry that still shows Edge and choose your preferred browser, then confirm the change.
On some Windows releases you can reach the same controls by choosing defaults by link type or file type from the Default apps page. Do not change unrelated associations: the relevant protocol or extension is the one that determines the symptom. Microsoft’s detailed explanation is in Change Default Apps in Windows.
When only one protocol is affected
If an HTTPS link opens in Edge but an HTTP link does not, or vice versa, correct that protocol specifically. A browser can appear to be “switching back” when only one of these two entries was never changed.
When only web files are affected
If double-clicking an .html file opens Edge while clicking links uses another browser, change the .htm and .html associations. This is a file-opening rule, not evidence that Windows replaced the browser used for links.

Stop Outlook and Teams from choosing Edge
Microsoft states that Outlook and Teams can open web links in Edge without replacing the Windows default. In that situation, Windows may correctly show your preferred browser while links from those two apps continue to launch Edge.

- Open the affected app’s settings and find its link-opening or browser preference.
- Choose the option that uses the system default or your preferred browser, if the app offers it.
- Close and restart the app before testing a new link.
The exact label and location can vary by Outlook or Teams edition, so use the setting presented in the installed app rather than assuming it is the same as Windows’ Default apps page. Microsoft’s explanation of this separation is at Web links from Outlook emails and Teams chats open in Microsoft Edge.
If links from other applications use your chosen browser but Outlook or Teams does not, changing Windows’ default again will not address the app-level preference. Conversely, if links from every application use Edge, inspect Windows associations and S mode as well.
Understand Windows Search, widgets, and Edge-dependent features
Windows Search web results open in Edge. Microsoft also documents apps and widgets that depend on Edge. Those entry points can therefore launch Edge by design, even while another browser remains the Windows default.
Test the same URL from a neutral source, such as a document or a standard web link. If that test uses your preferred browser but a Search result still opens Edge, the result identifies a Windows feature behavior rather than a failed default-app setting. Do not infer that every Edge window came from the same rule. Search, a widget, Outlook, and an ordinary hyperlink can each follow different policies, so troubleshoot the entry point that matters to you.
Check whether Windows is in S mode
Windows 10 and Windows 11 S mode impose a platform restriction: Microsoft says Edge is always the default browser in S mode. The official wording is: “When you’re using Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default web browser, and Bing is the default search engine.” The same S mode FAQ covers Windows 10 as well; read it at Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode FAQ.
How to interpret the symptom
If the PC is in S mode, repeatedly setting another browser will not produce the normal unrestricted behavior. Edge opening from ordinary web links is expected under Microsoft’s documented rules, not evidence that an Edge update has silently taken over.
Leaving S mode
Switching out of S mode is Microsoft’s documented route to choosing a different default browser. Treat it as a deliberate system decision: Microsoft says leaving S mode cannot be reversed. Read the limitations and the current switch-out instructions in the S mode FAQ before proceeding. Do not recommend this change merely because Search or a widget opens Edge; those features can still be Edge-dependent for other reasons.
Could an Edge or Windows update be responsible?
Edge is integrated with Windows. Microsoft says it receives updates through its own installer or through Windows updates, and it documents why Edge cannot be uninstalled in the usual way. Those facts explain why Edge remains present and current on a Windows PC, but they do not demonstrate that an update universally resets a user’s browser default.

If the problem began after an update, treat the timing as a clue rather than a diagnosis. Check whether:
- the browser shown in Default apps actually changed;
- only Outlook, Teams, Search, or a widget is affected;
- only one protocol or file type points to Edge;
- the PC is running Windows 10 or 11 in S mode; and
- the choice survives a restart.

What to record if the problem persists
A precise record prevents broad fixes that do not match the symptom. Note the following before contacting support or troubleshooting further:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, including the edition and version shown in Settings.
- Whether S mode is enabled.
- The exact source of the link: ordinary application, Outlook, Teams, Search, widget, or another feature.
- Whether all links are affected or only a protocol, file type, or application.
- Which browser is shown under Windows’ Default apps before and after a restart.
- Whether the behavior began after a specific update and whether the association actually changed.
These observations separate a system-wide default problem from an app policy or Windows feature that intentionally uses Edge. They also provide the information needed to assess a device-specific case without claiming that one cause applies to every Windows installation.
