Windows can compress selected memory pages and keep them in RAM instead of immediately writing them to disk. The feature, documented for Windows 10 RTM in 2015, is designed to reduce hard page faults. Seeing compressed memory in Task Manager is not, by itself, evidence of a problem or a reason to disable the feature or buy more RAM.

What memory compression does in Windows

When Windows needs to reclaim physical memory, it can trim data from a process’s working set and retain selected pages in a compressed form in RAM. The data remains available in memory, but takes less physical space than its uncompressed representation. Microsoft described the feature as a way to make hard page faults less frequent in its September 16, 2015 explanation of Windows 10 RTM.

A hard page fault occurs when a process needs a page that is not currently resident in its working set and Windows must retrieve it from storage. Keeping trimmed pages compressed in RAM can avoid some disk retrievals. That does not mean Windows compresses every memory page all the time, and the documented purpose is not a guarantee that every workload will feel faster.

Why Task Manager may show compressed memory

Compressed pages are still held in system-managed physical memory. As a result, Task Manager may show memory associated with the System process even though the data originally belonged to other processes. That accounting can look surprising, but a compressed-memory value alone does not show whether the PC is running out of memory or performing poorly.

#1 Best Overall

Judge the reading alongside the workload and other indicators. Consider whether the PC remains responsive during normal use, how much physical memory is available, whether committed memory is approaching capacity, and whether disk activity or hard faults rise at the same time as slowdowns. Microsoft’s Performance Monitor troubleshooting guidance treats counters as diagnostic evidence to interpret together, not as standalone verdicts.

Compressed memory is not the page file

Compression and paging are related ways Windows manages memory, but they are distinct. Compression keeps selected data in a smaller representation in RAM. The page file is disk-backed storage; Microsoft describes it as backing for infrequently accessed modified pages and notes that it can also be required for crash dumps. See Microsoft’s page-file overview.

Page-file usage does not, by itself, prove that the system is slow or out of usable memory. Likewise, a page-fault counter needs context: faults can be part of ordinary memory management, and the count alone does not establish a performance problem. Microsoft explains these interpretation limits in its memory-management troubleshooting guidance.

How to tell whether memory pressure is affecting your PC

  • Check the experience: note whether slowdowns happen repeatedly during the same ordinary workload, rather than inferring trouble from a single reading.
  • Check memory together: compare available physical memory with committed bytes. A growing commit charge is more informative when it approaches the system’s capacity and coincides with symptoms.
  • Look for matching disk activity: if storage activity and hard faults rise when responsiveness drops, that combination may point to pressure or another storage-related bottleneck. It still needs investigation rather than a diagnosis from one counter.
  • Consider workload fit: if the applications you regularly use consistently demand more memory than the device can comfortably provide, the limitation may be capacity rather than compression itself.

These checks help distinguish a normal memory-management reading from a recurring constraint. No universal compressed-memory threshold or compression ratio is established by Microsoft’s cited feature explanation.

Tools for a deeper memory investigation

For a more detailed view than Task Manager provides, Microsoft Sysinternals offers two relevant utilities. RAMMap examines how physical memory is assigned. VMMap breaks down a process’s virtual and physical memory, including committed virtual memory and its working set. These tools help investigate allocation; their readings are not, on their own, a recommendation to install an optimizer or change Windows settings.

Should you disable compression or add RAM?

A compressed-memory figure alone is not a sound reason to disable a Windows feature. First establish whether ordinary workloads cause persistent symptoms and whether memory, commit, fault, and disk indicators support the conclusion that the device is constrained.

A RAM upgrade is worth considering only if evidence points to a real capacity limit and the specific computer supports an upgrade. Check the device’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, and whether its memory is replaceable before choosing a module; the available evidence does not identify a configuration or compatible part for any particular PC.
