Windows 7 is unsafe to use online because Microsoft stopped providing operating-system security updates after support ended on January 14, 2020. Its final Extended Security Updates (ESU) period ended in January 2023, so it has no current ESU coverage in 2026. For a retro gaming PC, the safest choice is to leave it offline if the game does not need a connection. If it does, put it on a separate guest network or VLAN and restrict what it can reach.
Why Windows 7 is risky online
Its operating system no longer receives security updates
Microsoft says Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020. Microsoft’s lifecycle policy says it does not publish updates, including security updates, after a product’s extended support ends. That means newly discovered weaknesses in the operating system are not addressed through ordinary Windows 7 security updates.
Extended Security Updates are over
Microsoft’s Windows 7 ESU program offered eligible organizations critical and important security updates for a maximum of three years beyond the end of support. The lifecycle table lists the Year 3 end as January 11, 2023; its displayed end timestamp falls on January 10 in Pacific time. Either way, Windows 7 has no current ESU coverage in 2026.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a historical caveat, not a current fix: Microsoft said its signature updates continued after Windows 7 support ended, but the MSE platform itself stopped receiving updates. An old antivirus signature feed does not restore operating-system security updates.

Browser support has also narrowed. Microsoft identifies Edge version 109 as the final version that supported Windows 7; Edge 110, released in February 2023, required Windows 10 or later. This is a specific Edge lifecycle fact, not a claim about every browser or game service. See Microsoft’s Edge supported operating systems page.
These facts establish a maintenance gap, not a precise likelihood that a particular PC will be compromised. A firewall or network separation can limit exposure and access to other devices, but neither supplies the missing Windows updates.

Choose how much network access the PC needs

The behavior of a guest network varies by router, so treat “guest” as a label to verify, not a guarantee. CISA describes guest Wi-Fi as a simple home segmentation option and advises checking that devices are separated from the main network. Its 2024 Federal Mobile Workplace Security guidance notes that segmentation reduces risk but does not make a network impenetrable.
Keep the PC offline when networking is unnecessary
If the game works without online services, disconnect Ethernet and turn off Wi-Fi. This avoids exposing the PC through a network connection. Offline use does not eliminate every risk: files and removable media can still carry threats.

Use a guest network or VLAN if the game needs a connection
Option 1: Configure a guest network
- Check the router’s documentation and settings to confirm that its guest network blocks access to devices on the main LAN. Do not assume all guest networks behave alike.
- Connect the retro PC to that guest network rather than the main home Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
- Verify the separation: test whether the PC can reach a device on the main network, such as a personal computer or NAS. If it can, the guest settings are not providing the isolation you need.
- Check that the game’s required connection still works. If it does not, adjust only the necessary access rather than opening the whole home network.
CISA’s home-network guidance describes guest Wi-Fi as a practical segmentation method, but it does not certify individual router models.
Option 2: Create a VLAN and restrict traffic
A VLAN separates devices logically; firewall or gateway rules determine which traffic can cross between network segments. NIST’s SP 800-82 Revision 3 explains that segmentation can be physical or logical, including VLANs, and recommends basing permitted communications on mapped data flows. Although the publication addresses operational technology, these segmentation principles also help explain how to limit connections in a home network.

- Place the Windows 7 PC on its own segment, separate from personal computers, file shares, NAS devices, printers, and router administration.
- Allow only the destinations and services the game or local service actually needs.
- Deny other traffic between the retro segment and the main LAN unless a specific requirement justifies an exception.
- Avoid exposing Windows 7 services directly to the public internet or forwarding ports to the PC.
These are general configuration principles, not router-specific instructions. Exact menus, rule syntax, and available controls depend on the router or firewall.

Some games may rely on local discovery or broadcast traffic. Test the game’s multiplayer needs before tightening rules. If participating devices need to discover one another, allow only the required traffic or keep those legacy devices together on the isolated segment. Requirements vary by game; there is no universal rule for retro multiplayer.

Limit what you do on the Windows 7 PC
A separate network reduces the PC’s reach into your home network; it does not make Windows 7 a supported or fully safe system. Avoid using it for email, shopping, banking, or general web browsing. Use a currently supported device for those activities, and give the retro PC only the network access its games require.
