If your Windows 11 PC appears to turn off but resumes with your previous session, it may have entered hibernation (ACPI state S4). That symptom alone does not identify a Windows bug or a failing component. First check the power timers and lid or power-button actions, then use Windows’ built-in powercfg reports to narrow down what happened.

What S4 means—and what it does not tell you

In S4, Windows saves operating-system context to a hibernation file and powers down. The PC can look off, but it can restore the saved session when you turn it back on. Microsoft describes S4 as “the lowest-powered sleeping state” and says it has the longest wake-up latency. Microsoft’s overview of system sleeping states explains how it differs from other sleep states.

Hibernation is not the same as a full shutdown or ordinary sleep. Seeing a slow wake or a restored session can help identify the behavior, but it does not reveal why the PC entered S4. Windows settings, supported sleep model, device drivers, and model-specific behavior are all worth checking before concluding that hardware has failed.

Check the settings that can send the PC to sleep or hibernate

Review screen and sleep timeouts

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
  2. Review the sleep timeout as well as the screen timeout. A screen turning off does not, by itself, mean the PC has hibernated.
  3. Compare the on-battery and plugged-in values, if both are shown. Make sure they match how you use the PC.

Windows power-setting defaults vary between Modern Standby and S3 systems; Microsoft documents them on its Windows 11 power settings page. Treat a timeout value as a configured default or setting, not evidence of how often unexpected S4 transitions occur.

Check lid-close and power-button actions

In Power Options, inspect what Windows is set to do when you close the lid or press the power button. Either action can be configured to sleep or hibernate, so compare the selected action with what you expect. Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernate guidance describes these controls. If you change a setting, observe whether the behavior recurs before making other changes.

Use powercfg to identify supported states and gather evidence

Open Command Prompt and run the commands below. Some reports require an elevated (administrator) prompt. The commands collect different kinds of information; none should be treated alone as proof of the cause of an S4 transition.

Command What it tells you Important limitation
powercfg /a Lists sleep states available on the PC and reasons unavailable states cannot be used. Identifies the supported sleep model, not the cause of a specific transition.
powercfg /lastwake Reports information about what woke the computer from its last sleep transition. Wake history may not identify why the PC entered S4.
powercfg /waketimers Lists active wake timers. A wake timer is not, on its own, an explanation for entering hibernation.
powercfg /sleepstudy Generates a SleepStudy report for a Modern Standby system. SleepStudy is specific to Modern Standby and is not a universal S4 root-cause report.
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics Generates a report about periods when the user was absent and whether the PC entered sleep. Microsoft requires an elevated prompt for this command.

For syntax and options, see Microsoft’s powercfg command reference. The utility is useful for building a timeline and checking configuration, but a report may not name a single cause.

When SleepStudy is useful

SleepStudy is intended for Modern Standby PCs. Microsoft says its report includes session-level details such as active and idle time, power consumed, and first-level causes of activity. The default report covers recent sessions, and the command supports a duration option. Use it to investigate Modern Standby activity, not as a guaranteed explanation of every hibernation event. See Microsoft’s SleepStudy documentation.

Choose a next step based on what you find

  • A timeout or action does not match your intent: Adjust the relevant sleep timeout, lid-close action, or power-button action. Change one setting at a time and watch for recurrence.
  • The issue appears associated with a device or resume behavior: Where appropriate, disconnect and reconnect affected peripherals, restart the PC, and check for current drivers.
  • The behavior seems specific to your PC model: Consult the computer maker’s documentation or support page for model-specific drivers, firmware, or resume guidance. The right next step depends on the evidence and the device.

Do not assume that every unexpected S4 event has the same cause: the available Windows guidance does not establish one universal cause or fix across Windows 11 hardware, nor does it provide an incidence rate for this symptom.

Check update claims against your Windows version

Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview-update notes for Windows 11 version 26H1, KB5120996 (OS Build 28000.2804), describe a reliability improvement that applies Settings power changes across power plans. This is a release-specific note, not evidence that the update caused or will resolve every unexpected S4 event. Check the affected PC’s Windows version and update history before relating that change to its behavior. Read Microsoft’s KB5120996 notes.
