If Wi-Fi is not working, first find out whether the problem affects one device or every device—and whether you are disconnected from Wi-Fi or connected to Wi-Fi without internet. Those clues point to different fixes. Check the device and connection, compare another device, then work outward to the router, coverage, and internet service before trying disruptive resets.
First, identify what “Wi-Fi not working” means
A Wi-Fi indicator only shows that your device has joined a local wireless network; it does not guarantee that the router can reach the internet. Windows, for example, distinguishes “Wi-Fi Connected” from “No Internet.” The connection may fail at the device, the wireless link, the router, the modem, or the internet service provider (ISP).
Check whether Wi-Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and the device is connected to the intended network name (SSID). Note the exact status: does it fail to connect, connect and show no internet, or work briefly before dropping?

- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Only one device fails: Focus on that device’s Wi-Fi and Airplane mode settings, saved network details, adapter or driver, and power settings.
- Several devices fail: Check the router, modem, and ISP connection. Look at the equipment’s status lights and check whether your provider reports a service issue.
Microsoft recommends this device-to-device check in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. A failure on several devices does not, by itself, tell you whether the router or the provider is responsible; the next tests help narrow that down.
Try low-risk fixes before changing network settings
Reconnect to the right network
Confirm the SSID, then forget the saved network on the affected device and join it again using the correct password. This can resolve a stale or incorrect saved connection without changing the router.
Restart the modem and router
- Unplug the modem and router from power. If they are a combined unit, unplug that device.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, as Microsoft’s support guidance recommends.
- Plug in the modem first, if it is separate. Wait for it to stabilize, then power on the router.
- Reconnect a device and check whether internet access returns.
Restarting interrupts internet access for everyone using the network while the equipment reconnects. The FCC consumer guide notes that rebooting a router can sometimes help, but it is not a fix for every cause.

If Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet, test the path beyond the device
When possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and test internet access. Microsoft’s guidance says that if Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, the problem points toward the Wi-Fi router side rather than a general loss of internet service. If Ethernet also has no internet, investigate the modem or ISP connection. If your Windows PC lacks an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is one possible way to run this diagnostic; it is not required for the other checks.
On Windows, you can also test whether the PC can reach its default gateway—the router’s local address. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guide describes pinging the gateway: a reply shows that the PC can reach the router, shifting attention toward the modem or ISP; no reply points back toward the local Wi-Fi or router path. This command-line check is Windows-specific and is not a universal phone or computer procedure.
If the connection is weak or drops in certain places, investigate coverage
Test in more than one location, including near the router and in the room where the trouble occurs. Compare reliability or speed before changing settings. A connection that works near the router but weakens farther away suggests a coverage, obstruction, or interference problem rather than a complete ISP outage.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Move closer to the router to see whether the connection improves.
- Where practical, place the router in a more open, central location and reduce physical obstructions between it and the device.
- If the router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band. This can help identify a band-specific range or compatibility issue.
- Consider nearby sources of interference or competing networks. The FCC consumer guide notes that other devices and nearby networks can affect performance.
Microsoft’s guide to Wi-Fi and home layout explains how placement, obstructions, and network settings can affect coverage. It also notes that channel width can affect some older adapters. Change channel width only if you know how to restore its original setting; router controls vary by model.

When a range extender may help
If the connection is reliably weak in part of the home and relocating the router or device is impractical, a Wi-Fi range extender may help extend coverage. It needs to be compatible with the existing router and placed where it can still receive a usable signal—not simply in the dead zone. An extender will not fix an ISP outage, an incorrect password, or a failing device driver.
For a one-device failure, troubleshoot that device
After confirming that other devices can use the network, return to the device that fails. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled, Airplane mode is off, and the saved network and password are correct. Then use the operating system’s network troubleshooting options. Driver, adapter power-management, and update steps depend on the device and operating system.

For Windows 11, Microsoft’s current Wi-Fi guide recommends starting with the Get Help Network and Internet troubleshooter. Its Windows 10/11 instructions also cover resetting TCP/IP and DNS state with network commands, checking or reinstalling the network adapter driver, disabling adapter power saving, installing updates, and restarting. Follow the Windows guide for the exact procedure rather than applying Windows commands to a phone, Mac, or other system.
Keep Windows Network reset for last
Network reset is a late-stage Windows option, not a first response to a brief outage. It restores network adapter settings, and VPN or virtual-switch software may need to be set up again afterward. Try the less disruptive checks first and follow Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guide if you decide to use it.
Check security compatibility cautiously
A router’s security mode can affect whether older devices connect, but weakening security casually can expose the network to avoidable risk. Microsoft describes WPA3 as the current Wi-Fi security standard in its guidance, and warns that WEP and TKIP are outdated and vulnerable. Some older devices may not support newer settings.
Best Value

Before changing the router’s security mode, check the router and client documentation for compatible options. Microsoft also advises against using WEP or a hidden SSID as a workaround. See its Wi-Fi network security guidance.
When to contact your ISP or device support
Contact your ISP if several devices cannot reach the internet, Ethernet also fails, and restarting the modem and router has not restored service; ask the provider to check for an outage or a problem with the incoming connection. If only one device remains affected while others work, use the device maker’s operating-system or adapter support steps. Note which devices fail, whether Ethernet works, and whether the issue changes by location—those results help support staff identify the failing part of the connection.
